Home improvement does not necessarily mean completing an upgrade inside of the home. Repairs to the driveway or grooming your lawn can also be considered home improvement. There are a lot of things under this umbrella, and there is a lot you should learn before attempting to handle improvements. Check out these great tips. Improving your home?s curb appeal can be as easy as replacing a mailbox. A new, more modern mailbox can make your home feel upgraded. The project can often be completed in less than two hours. Just be sure to follow any Home Owners? Association guidelines when picking your mailbox out. When you are hiring a private contractor to do work on your home, it is important to contact their references before you agree to hire them. There are some people who do not have a great track record and speaking with their previous clients is a great way to see who the best contractor to hire is. A great idea when thinking of hiring a remodeler for your home is to take some time and visit the job sites they are currently working on. The best remodelers will have organized and clean interior worksites, keep the exterior of their site clean, and will have safety measures in place on the job site.
If you?re trying to improve the look of your kitchen or bathroom, consider installing a colorful back splash. You can purchase colorful tiles for really cheap. If you have the skills to install the tile by yourself, you will save money by not having :
//housecleaningcalgary.org">HouseCleaningCalgary.org to hire someone to do the work for you.
Take pride and joy in your work while trying to enjoy yourself. As long as you keep safety in mind, have fun remodeling your house. If you have a positive outlook while making home improvements, you are more likely to stick with your goals and get the work completed in a timely manner. Updating an outdated kitchen could be as easy as replacing the cabinetry. This can be done on your own, but remember to make sure to check for all of the screws that are holding your existing cabinets in place. Cut the caulk that is sealing it to the wall prior to removing them, and you will have a nice smooth surface to install the new ones. If you are doing multiple projects in one room, consider the order of the projects. If you are replacing the cabinets and floor, it is a good idea to start with the cabinets. If you start with the cabinets, the debris will only hurt the floor that you are about to replace. Sit down and write out a detailed plan before you do any work ? you?ll be very glad that you did. For an affordable and attractive temporary update, consider a bright and colorful wreath for your front door. This easy fix requires no commitment and very little investment. Furthermore, you can change the wreath frequently to reflect the changing seasons, holidays, or just to indulge yourself with a favorite color palette.
Brighten up your dining room with table linens. By using tablecloths and runners on your dining table, you can achieve a unique look that can be changed with every season. As well as :
//calgarymaidservice.org">http://calgarymaidservice.org creating an attractive dining environment, they protect your table from scratches. Try to pick a material that is easily washable and stain resistant.
Make sure you take before and after photos of any work or improvements you do to your home. You may like to look back on all the hard work and changes when it feels like the project as a whole will never be done. Keep pictures on your computer or have them printed for a scrapbook. If you are renovating your bathroom, consider installing a steam shower. Steam showers have many health benefits, as well as being more comfortable to use than a standard shower. Steam showers are great after exercise, to soothe tired muscles, or for people with asthma and other breathing difficulties. There are even steam shower products that can be added to your current shower unit. Hire a professional designer or architect if you are not one yourself. A lot of homeowners try to cut corners by using a ?friend? or drawing up plans themselves, but experts have already done the work and know environmental and zoning restrictions. Oops ? now that the putting green?s done, you didn?t realize it needed a permit? Improving your home is a big, sometimes costly endeavor. Don?t make the mistake of cutting corners. It doesn?t matter if you?re trying to throw on some new wallpaper or pull up an old rug, your home improvements will not go as planned unless you?re properly prepared and knowledgeable about what you?re attempting to do. Be sure that you?re taking this information seriously and working to implement what you have read above.

Smartphones power Samsung to record $4.5 bn net profit

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Friday posted a record net profit of 5.19 trillion won ($4.53 billion) in the second quarter, powered by strong smartphone sales despite the global downturn.

The company, the world's biggest technology firm in revenue terms, also reported a record operating profit in April-June of 6.72 trillion won.

The net profit represented a 48 percent gain from a year earlier while operating profit jumped 79 percent year-on-year.

Samsung cited robust demand for its mobile devices including high-margin smartphones, along with strong sales of ultra-thin displays.

Total revenue rose 21 percent to 47.59 trillion won, in a quarter that is usually quieter for technology companies.

Market researcher Strategy Analytics said Friday the Korean firm increased its share of the global smartphone market in the second quarter to 34.6 percent, compared to 17.8 percent for arch-rival Apple.

Samsung shipped 50.5 million smartphones, the largest number ever by any vendor in a single quarter, it said in a report.

"Samsung has been able to deliver hit models in most major price segments," Strategy Analytics noted, while Apple fans may be awaiting the launch of the next generation iPhone around September or October.

Samsung remained the world's biggest seller of all types of mobile handset in April-June with a 25.7 percent market share compared to Nokia's 23.1 percent.

The Korean firm said its differentiated products and competitive technology helped it overcome a difficult business environment, but struck a note of caution for the months ahead.

"As we move into the second half, continued fiscal instability in Europe and its effect on the global economy will result in the possibility of a slower than expected recovery and intensified market competition," said senior vice-president Robert Yi in a statement.

Analysts were more bullish, expecting an even better performance in coming quarters.

They said smartphone earnings -- which account for more than 50 percent of operating profit -- would remain a strong contributor to the bottom line.

"The mobile division, which alone will see an operating profit of 4.8 trillion won in the third quarter, was helped by sales of the Galaxy S III smartphone, and it will lead the firm's overall growth," said Y.B. Oh, an analyst at Hanmag Securities.

The company has sold more than 10 million Galaxy S III phones since its launch about two months ago.

Oh said the chip division would also register its biggest profit of around 1.6 trillion won in the third quarter, with prices expected to stabilise due to new product releases.

Kiwoom Securities analyst Kim Sung-In forecast likely overall operating profit of at least 7.7 trillion in the third quarter.

"I would sell Apple shares and buy Samsung. Samsung's operating profit margin also will exceed that of Apple in the next quarter," Kim said.

Kristen Stewart Admits Affair ? Issues Statement

Kristen Stewart just admitted to hooking up with the director of her new movie. This is EPIC news for Twilight world, and definitely a huge story in general. Find out what she had to say about it here.   I read through the entire Twilight series in a weekend when I first picked them up. Kristen Stewart has been the perfect, odd, awkward Bella for me — but I could never picture her doing anything scandalous like this! She has the real life Edward waiting for her at home every day, and what does she do? She hooks up with the creep director of Snow White and the Huntsman. Sheesh. Here is what Kristen Stewart had to say about being caught by a photographer snogging with Rupert Sanders: “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.” A “momentary indescretion”?? Amazing. Now she is putting R-Patz in a tough situation. Do you shrug it off and try to move [...]

Nokia scraps phone software to conserve cash: sources

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish cellphone maker Nokia has ditched the software it was developing to compete with Google's mass-market Android phones, three sources with direct knowledge of the company's plans said, in its latest move to slash costs.

Loss-making Nokia was hoping the Linux-based software platform, code-named Meltemi, would replace its ageing Series 40 software in more advanced feature phones - mid-range phones that sit between basic models and sophisticated smartphones.

Scrapping the platform means Nokia will risk losing its strong position in the mass-market, where phones are priced at $100-$200. Nokia controlled more than 20 percent of this market in the first quarter, according to research firm IDC.

Nokia's Chief Executive Stephen Elop flagged Meltemi in a leaked video in mid-2011, but Nokia has never officially confirmed Meltemi existed. It declined to comment on Thursday.

In June, Nokia said it would cut 10,000 jobs - one in five staff in its phone business - as it battles to pull the company out of the red. Talks over job cuts are scheduled to end this week in Finland.

Shares in Nokia extended their gains on Thursday and were 6.1 percent higher at 1.56 euros by 9:28 a.m. EDT (1328 GMT).

"With the pressure to make extreme cost-savings it is little surprise that it has been cut," said Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham. Launching and maintaining a software platform costs hundreds of millions of euros.

One of the sources, who works at a supplier, said the original plan was for the first feature phones using Meltemi should to be on the market by now.

Smartphones such as Apple's iPhone which offer a platform for third-party application developers, is where the industry's strongest growth is. But simpler feature phones, with limited support for third-party software, still account for most phones sold.

Nokia's Series 40 platform is in around 2 billion cellphones, making it the most ubiquitous software in the market. But it lacks the smartphone-like experience, such as a wide choice of advanced applications, that Meltemi could have offered.

Google's Android platform has stormed the smartphone market in its first few years. Last quarter it was used in roughly 60 percent of all smartphones sold.

Nokia last year dumped its own smartphone software platforms in favor of Microsoft's Windows Phone, which has so far had a limited impact, in part due to the high prices of phones using it.

"The important factor for Nokia is driving Windows Phones prices low enough to bridge the gap with the feature phones Asha range -- that should happen in 2013," said Cunningham.

IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said Nokia has done well by adding new features like full-touch screens and keyboards to its latest Asha range of Series 40 phones.

Weinberg Proposes Temporary Meadowlands Casino For Super Bowl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Super Bowl XLVIII?is still nearly a year and a half away, but plans are well underway for the event.

One of those possible plans is a temporary casino at the Meadowlands. Some might call it a pop-up casino.

WCBS 880 anchor Steve Scott spoke with New Jersey?State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen County) about the proposal.

LISTEN: Eye on Politics
(Subscribe here)

Scott asked her why it?s a good idea.

?Well, we?re going to be having an extraordinary number of visitors to New Jersey for the Super Bowl. We are, in northern New Jersey where MetLife Stadium is located, about a two-hour drive to Atlantic City,? she said. ?So, since all these folks are coming in and since we know that gambling is a kind of fun time during a week like that, we thought ?Well, putting something right in the area where most of the people will be could attract more visitors, bring more income to the state of New Jersey, and give people who are coming in for the Super Bowl another venue to enjoy.?

Scott pointed out that Gov. Chris Christie has been adament about not allowing casino gambling outside Atlantic City.

?Have you heard from the governor or his people on this idea?? asked Scott.

?No. Not yet, and yes I do understand that and I think we are all invested in the success of Atlantic City. So, we are only talking about this for the one week of the Super Bowl,? Weinberg told Scott. ?As you called it a ?pop-up casino, which would have a beginning and an end, and we?re perfectly happy if one of the [Atlantic City] casinos themselves would run such an operation up here. So, it would improve an income stream for the casino, it would improve an income stream for the state of New Jersey, and, as I?ve said, it would help in providing another venue for folks to enjoy.?

?So, no ulterior motives, no cat out of the bag on gambling? You?re not trying to open the door to future expansion, at least with this particular pop-up casino?? asked Scott.

?Well, I think we know that the door can?t be opened for future casino gambling because I think the governor, and our legislative leadership, and certainly in the Senate, where I?m a member, have made it perfectly clear that they?re not going to entertain such an idea until they give Atlantic City some length of time to really improve,? said Weinberg. ?And we were kind of talking about it among staff members. Atlantic City is doing kind of new ad programs which is headlined ?DO AC? or Do Atlantic City. So, if we got permission to do a pop-up casino in the Meadowlands, we could headline it ?DO AC in the Meadowlands? or ?DO AC at the Super Bowl? so that it really becomes kind of ancillary that week to Atlantic City.?

?Now this is New Jersey?s Super Bowl, but you can?t deny the behemoth across the river there ? New York City. Is New York horning in on New Jersey?s Super Bowl?? asked Scott.

?You know, I know that New York is across the river. We pay $12 to drive across the George Washington Bridge to get there. So, I?m well aware of it,? she said. ?But no. You know, there are plenty of attractions both in the city and in New Jersey. But the football stadium is located in New Jersey. The Super Bowl is going to be in New Jersey, and we would like to provide visitors as much of a glimpse of New Jersey as they can get on a cold winter?s day in coming in for the Super Bowl.?

Super Bowl XLVIII is February 2, 2014.

What do you think of the idea of a temporary casino for the Super Bowl? Sound off in the comments section below.
