The first steps are often the most frustrating.
Even today, I can still feel the pain I went through many years ago. I had just quit my only job and took the leap of faith in starting an Internet based business selling information products.
I tried this. I tried that. I did this. I did that. And all I got were mediocre results. I was deeply frustrated but thankfully I didn't stop trying until I finally got my first $97 sale - it was like a miner who struck oil by chance!
From humble $100 days I went on to make $1000 days... then big paydays started to come in the form of $10,000... $100,000... even as recently as $250,000...
Every time I looked back, I realized it was the few things I did correctly that more than make up the dumb mistakes I made, and business took on a life of its own.
A common question I get all the time is to the effect of, "How Can I Get Started Like You?"
Now let's face it: things were DIFFERENT 6 years ago (that's a long time on the Internet). Heck, what worked last year don't necessarily work this year! However some things are fundamental and if I were to start all over here's what I would do:
1. Start a service. I know this is contradicting my core belief that 'every marketer should have their own product' - and I still maintain that. But creating a product and marketing it takes time. Offering a service generates cash flow quicker while catapulting into that direction. I would offer service in copywriting, social media or mobile marketing as these are high income fetchers (the last two being hot on demand right now).
2. Go to the Warrior Forum and Digital Point, and any other high traffic forums that have their own marketplace. These are the best places to start seeding a reputation, find new clients (I would need only a handful of clients vs. a horde of customers to begin with) and eventually find potential Joint Ventures or even long term business partners!
3. Focus on list building. My main priority for the long term plan. With a mailing list, I can do anything to monetize from it - sell own products, sell ad space or endorse as an affiliate for commissions.
4. Work towards the "big payday" a.k.a. product launch. Product launches have gone through stages of evolutions in the past years but it remains one of the success keys how some marketers exploded from small-time obscurity to legendary status. I owe a big chunk of my success and profits to staging product launches. So even if I were to start all over, this is still my big goal I work towards. To begin with, I would create a product revolved around my existing service I'm providing.
I hope this gives you a better clarity in the direction you want to pursue. While far from being the only way, this is what I would have done if I were to start all over again in the current marketing climate.
If you had to start all over, what would you do? Leave your comments below, and enjoy your weekend!
P.S. I just got back from skydiving in Udon Thani, Thailand. It was an exhilirating experience (and thank God I'm still alive) Look up and you'll never see the skies the same way again. Check out my skydiving video here!
