Saturday's college roundup (cross country, volleyball, field hockey): Bay Rivers alums excel in NCAA men's cross country championships

Two Bay Rivers District alumni earned All-American honors at the NCAA men's cross country championships in Louisville, Ky., and a third placed in the top 100.

North Carolina State?s Andrew Colley, a Jamestown High product, placed 16th to become a two-time All-American. He ran 10 kilometers in 29 minutes, 39.5 seconds, following last year?s 15th-place finish, and led the Wolfpack to 26th place.

Virginia Tech senior Will Mulherin, a Tabb High graduate, became the first two-time All-American in Hokies history by tying for 28th place in 29 minutes, 52.7 seconds over 10 kilometers. He led Tech to 22nd place.

Virginia?s Kyle King, who graduated from Grafton, was 99th in 30:42.8 as the Cavaliers took 14th. ,,,

Division III men's cross country:

At the NCAA Division III championships in Terre Haute, Ind., CNU senior Ray Gamache placed 83rd. Competing against 279 other runners, he finished 8 kilometers in 25:34.

Women's cross country:

In the women?s Division I meet, also in Louisville, William and Mary took 21st place in the 6k race.

Elaina Balouris (13th, 19:56.0) and freshman Emily Stites (26th, 20:05.8) got All-American honors for the Tribe.

Women?s volleyball:

Both Hampton and Norfolk State fell in five-set heartbreakers in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference semifinals in Baltimore.

HU won the first two sets but eventually lost to Maryland Eastern Shore 15-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13.

Vendula Strakova led the Lady Pirates with 26 kills, hitting .346 for the match.

Bibiany Fonseca had 50 of Hampton?s 60 assists. Victoria Williams led UMES (27-5) with 23 kills.

Norfolk State fell to Florida A&M 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 32-30, 17-15 despite holding four match points on its serve in the fourth set.

Wrestling:

Apprentice took fourth in the team standings at the University of Central Florida Open in Orlando.

Five wrestlers finished in the top three in their weight classes: Sterling Briscoe (third at 149 pounds), Kyle Spruill (second at 157), Phillip Porto (third at 165), Josh Rodriguez (third at 197) and Ian Jones (second at 285).

Field hockey:

Mary Washington, third in Division III, saw its season end with a 4-0 semifinal loss to second-ranked Montclair State in the NCAA tournament.

UMW trailed 3-0 at halftime and ended the year with a 20-2 record. Tufts beat DePauw 2-0 in the other semifinal contest.
