Olaf Urlik, 33, and Norbert Jarzabek, 32, both from Poland, admitted to conspiring to smuggling cocaine with a street value of $2.5 million (?1.6 million) from Colombia to Nottingham at a hearing in January, according to the report.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency, a British law enforcement organization, reported that the drug was dissolved in bags of fluid and stored inside larger bags with the live fish. More than 16,000 fish died in the operation. Thirty-four fish?including stingrays, catfish and tetras, are recovering at the London Zoo Aquarium.

According to investigators, the two men carried out a trial run in April. They were eventually arrested in July, after picking up a shipment of 25 boxes of tropical fish, which SOCA had scanned and found 10 bags - weighing 37?pounds - of cocaine.

?This was a highly sophisticated operation," Nottingham Crown Court Judge Head said.

London Zoo?s Rachel Jones told SOCA the surviving fish are now thriving at the aquarium. "When we first got the fish, most of them were drastically underweight, and they?d been living in cold, dirty water for days."

Mammals responded to this climate change by shrinking, with about one-third of species getting smaller.

Now, new research reveals that these changes occurred in lockstep with temperature fluctuations during the period. The earliest-known horse , Sifrihippus started out this period as a bit of a pipsqueak: The animals weighed only about 12 pounds (5.6 kilograms) on average, about the size of a miniature schnauzer.

But by 130,000 years into the PETM, Sifrihippus had shrunk down to only about 8.5 pounds (3.9 kg), the size of a small housecat. These humble horses then experienced a size rebound, bulking up to about 15 pounds (7 kg) in the last 45,000 years of this warm period, putting them on par with the average bichon frise.

Measurements of horses' teeth found in the area suggested a distinct pattern of shrinking and growing body size over the PETM time period. At first, that finding seemed like a mistake, Bloch told Livescience, because the assumption had been that horses in the PETM were all uniformly teeny.

The researchers then analyzed the oxygen isotopes (atoms of the same element with different masses) in the horse teeth, which serve as markers of local temperatures at the time the horses died. They found that temperatures perfectly matched up with size measurements. The hotter it got, the smaller the horses. Other factors, including aridity and carbon dioxide concentration, did not match up as well.

"This, for the first time, tells us that temperature is what's driving the body size evolution for these horses," Bloch said. He and his colleagues reported the findings Thursday in the journal Science.

The findings fit with what is known about modern-day mammals and birds, which are generally smaller near the equator. This may be because smaller size helps animals regulate their body temperatures in the heat, or perhaps because of the availability of food sources. (Much of the land near the equator is arid, and food sources are slim, Bloch said.)

The world experienced about the same amount of warming during the PETM as some climate models project it will in response to today's greenhouse gas emissions. The difference, Bloch said, is that the warming in the PETM happened over 170,000 years, while modern temperatures could reach PETM levels within a century or so if projections are correct.

"While our study provides a measure of possible response to global warming ? that is, getting smaller ? in a sense that is the best-case scenario," Bloch said. If animals can't evolve quickly enough to keep up, they're more likely to go extinct.

"It can only get worse, basically," Bloch said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barnes & Noble said Tuesday that its fiscal third-quarter net income fell 14 percent, as rising costs offset higher sales of both traditional books and digital books.

The company also said Tuesday that it is introducing a Nook Tablet device with 8 gigabytes of memory for $199. Its current 16GB device sells for $249. Barnes & Noble's biggest e-book reader competitor, Amazon.com's Kindle Fire, is also 8GB and sells for $199.

Barnes & Noble cut the price of its Nook Color device to $169 from $199. It has fewer tablet-like features than the Nook Tablet.

Revenue from its Nook e-readers and digital catalog rose 38 percent to $542 million. The figure includes the actual selling prices for e-books, rather than the commission received on selling them, and also includes all deferred e-reader device revenue.

Traditional book sales rose 4 percent. That could partly be due to the fact that it was the first holiday season it did not have to contend with competition from Borders, its chief rival that liquidated last year.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $2.44 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $2.53 billion.

The company's cost of sales rose nearly 12 percent and its selling and administrative expenses were up about 14 percent.

Barnes & Noble reaffirmed its guidance for the full year. The bookseller expects a yearly loss of $1.40 to $1.10 per share on total sales between $7 billion and $7.2 billion. Analysts expect a loss of $1.14 per share on revenue of $7.26 billion.

Barnes & Noble shares rose 50 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $13.61 in morning trading.
