(AP) ? "Octomom" Nadya Suleman has checked herself into a rehabilitation center, citing anxiety, exhaustion and stress, a spokeswoman for the mother of 14 said Tuesday.

Suleman had been taking the medication Xanax under a doctor's care to deal with her problems, but she felt she needed a treatment program to help with her recovery, spokeswoman Gina Rodriguez said in a statement.

Suleman checked herself into Chapman House Treatment Center on Oct. 23 and "will be in treatment for 28 days or more if needed," Rodriguez said.

The rehab facility declined to confirm they are caring for Suleman because of patient confidentiality laws.

Meanwhile, three nannies and two of Suleman's friends will care for her octuplets, who will be 4 years old in January, and her six older children.

A driver will take the kids to and from school, and their Palmdale home in the Mojave Desert has around-the-clock security, Rodriguez said.

Suleman has repeatedly been investigated by social services over allegations of neglect and child abuse. Prosecutors decided not to file charges earlier this month following the most recent allegations. Rodriguez said the woman who made the allegations was obsessed with Suleman's children.

Suleman, who has been in the media spotlight since giving birth to the octuplets in 2009, lived in Orange County until she moved her brood to the Palmdale home earlier this month.

After the move, she told the local newspaper she was happy because she was no longer receiving death threats and the house had only been egged once.

Over the last four years, Suleman has tried to cash in on her notoriety in a variety of ways, including endorsing milkshakes, making a pornographic video, posing for semi-nude photo shoots and participating in celebrity boxing matches.

Rodriguez said the rehab center offered to treat Suleman at no charge, but she opted to pay for the program.

All 14 of Suleman's children were conceived through in vitro fertility treatments. Her octuplets are the world's longest-surviving set.

(AP) ? Water welling into southern Manhattan drenched one of the world's densest communications nodes, taking out popular websites and forcing carriers to reroute international traffic.

As commercial power was cut to the southern tip of Manhattan, data centers and phone-companies facilities in the Wall Street area were forced to switch to diesel generators. Data centers that failed to keep running on backup power brought down news and gossip sites Gawker, Huffington Post and many popular New York-based blogs.

Gawker was still down Tuesday afternoon, but Huffington Post was back online. Their webhost, Datagram Inc., said power was out and flooding in their basement was preventing their backup generators from pumping fuel. Internet connectivity from three providers was also down, Datagram said.

Verizon Communications Inc., the biggest phone company in the region, had some of its nodes in downtown Manhattan flooded, shutting down phone and Internet service.

Further uptown, data centers hosted in a "telecom hotel" that spans a whole block and houses Google's New York headquarters were reporting outages as well, apparently because backup power failed when commercial power was cut Monday evening.

Renesys Corp., which monitors the pathways of the Internet, said the storm caused major outages in New Jersey and New York. The city is a major transit point for international telecommunications traffic, and the firm said carriers were scrambling to route traffic around it.

Cablevision Systems Corp., which serves parts of Long Island, New York City and New Jersey, said it's experiencing widespread outages due to the loss of power. The company said it doesn't yet know the extent of outages in New Jersey, which bore the brunt of the storm.

Time Warner Cable Inc., the other big New York-area cable company, said it had no reports of significant damage to its network, but customers without power had no cable service.

AT&T Inc. said there are "issues" in hard-hit areas, and it's in the early stages of checking for damage and restoring service.

Officials unveil plan to eliminate childhood obesity in ... - Health Blog

Staff writer Julie Fancher reports:

Community leaders met Tuesday to unveil a plan to eliminate childhood obesity in Dallas by 2020.

The plan, named Charting the Course for a Healthy Future, was introduced at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children after nearly two years of planning by a coalition of more than 60 organizations and community leaders.

?Reducing childhood obesity will have a profound impact on the health and quality of life for all North Texans,? said Susan Hoff, chief strategy officer of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. ?Teaching children to make healthy choices today enables them to make responsible choices for the rest of their lives.?

Obesity is a worsening problem among U.S.children, leading to a number of health risks such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

In 2012,Texasranked seventh among the states with the most obese children, andDallaswas listed as one of the top 10 most overweight cities in the nation.

?Teaching children how to eat well and live healthy is the key to preventing and reversing childhood obesity,? said Eduardo Sanchez, vice president and chief medical officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Mayor Mike Rawlings spoke about his goal to help Dallas have the healthiest kids in America through a number of youth health initiatives. He believes that Charting the Course for a Healthy Future is the first step to achieving this goal.

?What we do today plants the seed for the future,? the mayor said. ?We are talking about health, and it doesn?t happen overnight, but it does happen.?

Those involved in the initiative say the coalition needs $447,000 to implement and evaluate the first year of the plan, and the panel encouraged other organizations to get involved.

?This forum is not only a call to action, but a call to arms to join us,? Sanchez said. ?This is about comprehensive sector by sector, individual by individual, and together we can do this.

Stocks see first two-day weather closing since 1888

CNBC's Bob Pisani has the latest on whether the exchanges will remain closed tomorrow.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 2:30 p.m. ET:?For the first time since the Great Blizzard of 1888, U.S. stock markets will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather.

The decision to close financial markets for a second straight day on Tuesday was made during a call between industry executives and regulators on Monday, Reuters said. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market both said they intend to remain closed for business again. The bond market will also remain closed on Tuesday.

The NYSE shuttered its operations on Monday?as Hurricane Sandy neared landfall on the East Coast, bringing about the first unplanned shutdown since the September 2001 terrorist attacks.

Every effort is being made to reopen U.S. stock markets on Wednesday, but a final decision has not been made yet, according to Reuters.?

"We intend to re-open our U.S. markets on Wednesday ... conditions permitting; updates will be provided tomorrow," the NYSE said in an e-mail.

Trading on the NYSE was last closed on Sept. 11, 2001, due to the terrorist attacks, and the exchange last closed for a weather related event in 1985, for Hurricane Gloria.

Tuesday's closure would mark the first weather-related consecutive-day closing since 1888, when a blizzard left drifts of snow as high as 40 feet.

All major U.S. stock and options exchanges were closed Monday. Options and other exchange-based derivatives will remain closed on Tuesday due to the storm.

There had been plans to allow electronic trading to go forward on the New York Stock Exchange Monday, but with all mass transit shut down in and out of Manhattan, the risks were determined to be too great.

Richard Grasso, former chairman and CEO of the NYSE, appeared on CNBC Monday to discuss how Wall Street is preparing for the storm.

Safety is the main concern, he said, adding that it?s ?absolutely right? that the markets remain closed Monday, and on Tuesday.

?The markets will function; they will come back,? Grasso said. ?Human life will always trump the need to trade.?

Sandy was aimed at the most densely populated U.S. region on Monday, forcing hundreds of thousands to seek higher ground, halting public transport and closing schools, businesses and government departments.

Lower parts of Manhattan around the Financial District are under mandatory evacuation orders.

A number of major U.S. companies have postponed quarterly earnings as financial markets shut down for the first time since 2001.

Acorda Therapeutics Inc., Pfizer Inc., Thomson Reuters and NRG Energy Inc. have already delayed earnings reports. Pfizer and NRG Energy made the decision early, as they were not set to report earnings until Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Investors are continuing to fret about the weak revenue picture developing for corporate America. Just 36.9 percent of S&P 500 companies so far have reported revenue that beat forecasts, compared with the 62 percent that typically exceed expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data as of Friday.

Stocks slid last week, following a series of weak results, especially from U.S. multinational companies. For the week, the Dow fell 1.8 percent, the S&P 500 lost 1.5 percent and the Nasdaq dropped 0.6 percent.

The U.S. government issued data on personal income and spending for September on Monday even though the government has shut down to brace for Hurricane Sandy. The Federal Reserve, however, will postpone its regularly scheduled data.

Consumer spending rose solidly in September as households stepped up purchases on automobiles and a range of other goods, setting up a firmer base for consumption this quarter.

The Commerce Department said on Monday consumer spending increased 0.8 percent after an unrevised 0.5 percent gain in August.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity to increase 0.6 percent in September.

On Friday, the government is expected to issue the last employment report before the U.S. presidential election.

It is forecast to show payrolls rose by 124,000 in October, barely more than September's 114,000 gain, according to 78 economists polled by Reuters. The unemployment rate probably edged back up to 7.9 percent after falling to 7.8 percent from 8.1 percent last month.

A U.S. official said on Monday that it was unclear if a powerful storm heading toward the country's east coast would delay the release of October's employment report.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Carnival of Personal Finance #385 ? Favorite Junk Food Edition

Mmm pizza. Oops sorry!

Welcome to this week?s?Carnival of Personal Finance. As much as I love to train and eat well, there?s nothing like pigging out. The way I see it is that if you eat well all week and train hard, you deserve to eat like a slob one day a week. Tim Ferriss in The 4-Hour Body suggests that you eat well 6 days a week and then pig out on Saturdays. I?ve taken this advice to heart and love to pig out once a week. Today I wanted to write about junk food that I love to pig out on.

What?s my favorite junk food?

Editor?s Picks.

What?s better than some poutine? I?ve?recently?gotten into pulled pork poutine. A solid poutine will keep you full for the rest of the day.

Eric from Narrow Bridge Finance presents How To Pay Yourself First, and says, ?Personal finance folks often throw around the term ?pay yourself first.? It is a bit big-headed of us to assume you know how to do that. Here are some steps you can take to put the most popular finance advice to work.?

I always enjoy writing and reading about paying yourself first. You?ll never save money if you don?t get into the habit of saving your money before you blow it all. The best part of paying yourself first is that it requires no effort.

Robert from The College Investor presents The Ultimate Hypocrite: Robert Kiyosaki and His Company?s Bankruptcy, and says, ?A story came across the news this weekend about Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and how his company went bankrupt last month. However minor you may consider it, I find it appalling as a personal finance writer. This guy made a living on selling ?his story? and encouraging others to fork out tons of money to hear it. In the end, the story crumbles, and it just makes him a hypocrite.?

I really enjoyed this piece. I was always skeptical of Kiyosaki and then I found out that he had no wealth prior to the release of his book and that the ?rich dad? never existed. I?m glad that I never attended any of his seminars.

A day in the life of a mom/rancher/Farm to School educator | Farm to ...

Guest post by??Debbie Lyons-Blythe on behalf of Beef Checkoff
Read more about Debbie?s life on the ranch on her blog, KansasCattleRanch.blogspot.com?

I?m just like any other mom. I get up early in the morning, make sure my kids are moving and head to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. I dress for work, get the kids out the door for school and put on my shoes and jacket to meet the day. This is where my day differs from millions of other moms.

Debbie Lyons-Blythe

I am a cattle rancher. It is my responsibility to feed and care for more than 500 head of cattle every day. In October, I feed 300 weaned calves every morning and night, checking them to make sure none are sick or injured. If they do need extra attention, I work with my veterinarian to determine what is the best way to make them healthy again. Our 250 mama cows are still in the pastures eating grass, but they need weekly visits to make sure they are healthy and that they have fresh water and grass to eat.

Some mornings, when it is cold and windy (as it often is in Kansas), I?d rather snuggle back into a blanket and wait for warmer days to go to work. In the winter, when the snow falls, I am constantly cold and I have a hard time putting on enough layers! I often feel like the kid from the movie A Christmas Story who falls and can?t get back up! But despite the difficulties, I love cattle ranching?I couldn?t dream of doing anything else.

Today, less than 2 percent of the American population is directly involved in growing the world?s food. I am proud to be in that group. I truly love cows; I love working on the land; and I love running a family ranch where my husband, kids and I work side by side to care for our cattle. There are few businesses these days that the children are able to be a part of from an early age; and fewer still that the children want to follow in their parents footsteps to take over one day in the future. Ranching is about sustainability?both ecologically, as well as economically.

So why do I take time to talk with consumers about what I do on our ranch? With the vast majority of the population living one, two or more generations from the farm or ranch, they either have a romanticized idea of ranching, or a misrepresentation of what large scale farming and ranching is. I work every day to correct that.

My family lives near a small town in central Kansas. Each year my kids and I sponsor a Farm to Fork Day at our local school, where we bring a cow and calf for the students to pet?often for the first time, and examples of everyday products that have a beef by-product in it. Students are amazed to learn of the products that depend on cattle for ingredients?jelly beans have gelatin, chewing gum is glycerin based, asphalt contains a binding agent from beef fat, and even tires have stearic acid which makes rubber hold its shape.

In addition, in a small school, a large percentage of students participate in school sports. I enjoy explaining the role of protein in a well balanced diet and showing those young athletes how zinc and iron, as well as B-vitamins that come from beef help build lean muscle. Lastly, I love to see what the students know about what a cow eats and I show them the Cow Chow game online. Often their teacher is able to offer computer time during class for the students to play Cow Chow!

Why do I take time out of my day to teach these kids about ranching? Because I am committed to young people (I have five of my own), and committed to enriching education. By showing them what I do on the ranch and how that directly impacts their life, I hope they will be more aware of the food they put in their bodies and how it fuels their lives. Because their perceptions are my reality! I love ranching, and I enjoy sharing that with kids.

Soda consumption, screen time, team sports at school influence students' weight

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Soda consumption, TV and video/computer games, and the frequency of meals heavily influenced students' weight in an Indiana University study that examined the impact of a school-based obesity intervention program over an 18-month period.

More soda consumption and screen time meant students were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight. The more frequently students ate meals each day, the less likely they were to stay overweight or gain weight during the study, which examined the Healthy, Energetic, Ready, Outstanding, Enthusiastic Schools program.

Dong-Chul Seo, associate professor in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, said participation in team sports also contributed to students' ability to achieve a healthy weight.

"Schools and families may be able to successfully focus on these modifiable risk factors, decreasing the burden of childhood obesity," he said.

HEROES, implemented by schools in southern Indiana, northwestern Kentucky and southeastern Illinois, is sponsored by the Welborn Baptist Foundation and based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Coordinated School Health Model. HEROES is intended to enhance schoolwide wellness culture through changes in physical education, nutrition, the physical environment, health promotion efforts for school staff and family, and community involvement. Researchers from IU's School of Public Health-Bloomington and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community have been evaluating the HEROES initiative for the past four years.

"Predictors for Persistent Overweight, Deteriorated Weight and Improved Weight Status During 18 Months in a School-Based Longitudinal Cohort" involved 5,309 students at 11 schools.

Seo said the findings confirm the connection between higher levels of soda consumption and persistent overweight and deteriorating weight status, and they support the recent and controversial New York City ban on sales of supersized soda and other sweetened beverages.

The finding about the relationship between the number of meals students eat daily and their weight contributes to a scant amount of evidence in this area.

"Thus, encouraging students to maintain a regular meal pattern with at least three meals a day appears to be a good strategy to help students achieve healthy weight," Seo said.

The research found that the overall socio-economic status of a school had an impact on students. Those attending schools with lower socio-economic status were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight during the study period. This could reflect the greater opportunities students have for nutritious food offerings and physical activity at schools with high socio-economic status, Seo said, or it could reflect peer influence.

Nanotube chip breakthrough means smaller, faster computers

14 hrs.

The ability to fashion computer chips out of carbon nanotubes will allow the trend of ever smaller, faster and more powerful chips to keep apace for several more decades, according to researchers.

The breakthrough reported Sunday by scientists at IBM Research comes as the routine shrinkage of computer chips every 12 to 18 months known as Moore?s Law was hitting a physical limit.?

Traditionally, transistors ? the switches on a chip that carry digital information ? are made of silicon. Today?s silicon transistors are approaching the atomic scale ? a physical limit ? as their speed and performance gains are stalling due to the nature of the material.

?In recent years, while chip makers have continued to double the number of transistors on chips, their performance, measured as ?clock speed,? has largely stalled,? the New York Times reported.

The researchers at IBM embedded more than 10,000 carbon nanotube transistors on a silicon chip. Electrons in carbon transistors can move easier than in silicon-based devices. The tubes are also ideally shaped for transistors at the nanoscale, the company explained in a news release.?

?These qualities are among the reasons to replace the traditional silicon transistor with carbon ? and coupled with new chip design architectures ? will allow computing innovation on a miniature scale for the future,? the news release reads.

Hurdles going forward include getting ultra-pure carbon and perfecting the manufacturing process. If progress continues apace, this should come about sometime after the end of the decade, IBM said.

The breakthrough was described Sunday in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

{Giveaway} Taste of Melbourne ? A Restaurant Safari : Iron Chef ...

Posted by Iron Chef Shellie on October 29, 2012 ? 17 Comments?

I have x5 double passes for the Thursday or Friday session of the Taste of Melbourne to give away! Read through to find out how to enter!?

Every year I tell you about my favourite food event of the year, Taste of Melbourne. Previous posts have been a taste of this year?s line up, 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008.

This year, the event is held later on in the year, and being held outside, lakeside at Albert Park Lake. All the other Taste festivals around the world are held outside, so they decided why shouldn?t Melbourne be outside too? To be honest, I?m glad they moved it, as last year was so damn squishy in the Royal Exhibition Building, I was getting so annoyed that I couldn?t actually move anywhere in a hurry!

I was invited as one of six people to be part of a restaurant safari, highlighting some of the top restaurants that will be at this year?s festival.

The Taste of Melbourne will be running Thursday 15 ? Sunday 18 November 2012. It brings together Melbourne?s hottest restaurants including:

So if you?ve wanted to try places like Mamasita, but the no booking policy, long waiting around thing doesn?t float your boat, I highly?recommend?you come down and get some tacos and corn in your belly, along with trying dishes from a whole heap of top restaurants! Where else can you indulge in numerous restaurants? dishes in the same venue on the one day?!

My wish list of restaurants to try is ever expanding, so I?ll be glad to cross a few off my list come November. And it?s not all about the restaurants, there are over 100 leading gourmet food and drink producers on site as well. You can even watch a cooking demonstration, attend a master class or relax in the Laurent-Perrier VIP Lounge or in the Lilydale Gourmet Picnic Garden.

Other features of this year?s festival will include an entire Sustainable Living Garden dedicated to greener cooking, rotating pop-up restaurants including Josie Bones, Three Blue Ducks, Bishop and Pope Joan. Malaysia Kitchen will feature Poh Ling Yeow, and a range of Melbourne?s Malaysian restaurants. Get up and close with top chefs in the Bertolli Taste Kitchen and Chef?s Skillery will feature international guest chef Nuno Mendes, as well as Matt Preston, Frank Camorra and Nick Creswick.

SO! What to expect in terms of food? You can see some of the dishes I?ve already tasted at the preview event, but on our restaurant safari we checked out: Mamasita, Sak?, Mr. Hive Kitchen & Bar as well as the gorgeous roof top bar at The Aylesbury. Scroll down for food porn :)

Mamasita

Mamasita Margarita ? El Jimador reposado, Cointreau, fresh lime, on the rocks

Elotes Callejeros ? ?Street Style? chargrilled corn, queso, chipotle mayo & lime

Taco de lengua?y cachete ? Braised ox tongue & cheek, pickled veg & ghost chilli mayo

Taco de pescado ? Grilled fish, lime, achiote paste, red onion salsa & chipotle mayo

The group reaction to the ox taco was ?ooo that?s a bit spicy? ?. then I read the menu? it had GHOST CHILLI!! I?ve only seen that kind of level of spice on Man VS Food, and I never thought I?d have the opportunity to try that here in Melbourne. It was good though, washed nicely down with the margarita. The fish taco was great too, I?m yet to encounter a fish taco I didn?t like. And well, everyone knows, the corn there is the best thing on the menu.

Sak?

Edamame

Sake Nigiri ? Kingfish jalapeno nigiri, salmon, soy salt, truffle oil and katafi pastry nigiri

Beef Tataki ? Seared tenderloin, Tataki sauce

Chirsashi Salad ? Yuzu dressed sashimi pieces, thin noodles, seasonal leaves and tempura crunch (will be available as a vegetarian dish)

Sak? is one gorgeous restaurant. One that would probably have been on my wish list for many years. Lovely private rooms, great huge windows over looking one of the best views of Melbourne?. and the food was just another level of Japanese. I usually have sushi when I get takeway at work, but kingfish and jalapenos were just something I wish the local sushi man would make! GREAT combination! And the Chirsashi salad was like nothing I?ve ever had before, but blew me right away. I need to have this again.

Mr. Hive Kitchen & Bar

Summer Berry Eton Mess

Salted Caramel Truffle, Chocolate Milk and Lolly Bags

Mr. Hive has been on the wishlist for a while now, especially with their dessert degustation? Well good news folks, the dessert degustation is coming to Taste!!

The dishes will be:

  • Chilled watermelon soup, elderflower liquor jelly
  • Mrs Hive?s Chocolate Bar
  • Summer Berry Eton Mess
  • Almond Milkshakes
  • Lolly Bags

Can I just say, that summer berry eton mess was amazeballs?.. but the salted caramel truffle?. chocolate milk? lolly bag? OMG! Don?t miss out on Mr. Hive? you?ll thank me later!!

The Alyesbury

Gay Pear ? Rum Soaked Pear, Fresh Berries, Cider Top

Dorper Lamb Ribs, Pea and Mint

The roof top bar is very welcoming, I?m upset I didn?t know about this place earlier as my friends and I LOVE cocktails. This place has a great play on words with their selection, including the Gay Pear. Sort of a dessert and cocktail in one, it was refreshing and full of texture. The lamb ribs were perfectly salty, a fantastic way to end an amazing night.

Can?t wait to do it all again, and more restaurants in November!!

Taste of Melbourne

Thursday 15 ? Sunday 18 November 2012 2012

Pelican Lawn at Albert Park Lake

Self Esteem | The Approval Trap - Being an "Approval Junkie" is ...

You are here: Home / Featured / The Approval Trap ? Being an ?Approval Junkie? is Harmful to Your Mental Health and Happiness

Posted by Dr. Irene on October 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

By Sharon S. Esonis, Ph.D. -

There is a rarely discussed addiction that can be as enslaving as drugs and as devastating to self-respect, self-confidence and healthy functioning as alcoholism. The obsessive need for approval brings with it a lot of baggage! It promotes failure and disappointment, wastes time, energy and money, and fosters dependence, anxiety, depression and exhaustion. If this is your drug of choice, you can expect a life where you are trapped in the stress zone.

In this type of existence you are not the architect of your own life. Rachel Naomi Remen, physician and early pioneer in the mind/body field, asserts, ?To seek approval is to have no resting place, no sanctuary. Like all judgment, approval encourages a constant striving. It makes us uncertain of who we are and of our true value. Approval cannot be trusted. It can be withdrawn at any time no matter what our track record has been. It is as nourishing of real growth as cotton candy. Yet many of us spend our lives pursuing it.?

When you care too much about the acceptance and applause of others, you give your power away. Just as the junkie who craves drugs is controlled by dependence on the substance, the approval addict who craves validation and appreciation is dependent on the whims of other people. Trouble for sure. Dependence is a slippery slope. You find yourself relying on others, hoping they will treat you with the same kindness and consideration they wish for themselves. Dependency enslaves you, giving others the ultimate power over how you perceive and feel about yourself. Do you really want to surrender something so personally vital to others?

This is dangerous territory. People often have their own agendas and prejudices that may serve neither to assuage your fears nor promote your best interests. Or they may tell you the truth, something you probably don?t want to hear if you?re struggling with this particular affliction. The truth might crush you because you seek only approval and are wholly unprepared for anything else. You may believe that you are unable to be okay when the feedback you receive is critical or disapproving. But worst of all, by not being your own primary source of approval, by depending on others for what you should be providing for yourself, you make it supremely difficult to be healthy, happy and prosperous.

How Does This Happen?

Just how does this ineffectual, paralyzing approach become a way of life? There?s a very good chance that you developed this as a result of messages from significant people in your formative years. They may have reinforced you for seeking approval, or they may have criticized you unduly or inappropriately, resulting in feelings of fear, helplessness and inadequacy. Or they may have lived their lives in their own approval trap, thus modeling the behaviors and thinking that are inherent in that particular pattern of dysfunction.

Sometimes parents, often unwittingly, reinforce approval-seeking behaviors beyond what is healthy. Why would they do this? Well, it can be very rewarding for them. They look like great parents because the child is so compliant. They find the child?s interactions to be very pleasing. And the parenting job is so easy with a child like this! The child, however, is learning to wear the shackles of the approval trap, often interpreting what is occurring as a successful way to approach life, both within and outside the family. Perhaps your parents or other important people in your life expected too much. And when you were not able to meet those expectations you were criticized and ridiculed.

When individuals are subjected to a steady diet of criticism, especially as children, they become fearful of being criticized, so they may put inordinate amounts of energy into findings ways to avoid the slings and arrows. To avoid criticism the child may find ways to hide from the source or may direct the lion?s share of his energy to garnering approval and applause. This approach is so exhausting. Children also can learn to make approval-seeking a way of life when they see these behaviors modeled by important people in their lives. When parents, older siblings and other significant people in a child or adolescent?s life are approval junkies, youngsters often conform to the behaviors, expectations and thinking processes of those they love, need, admire or fear.

The Benefits of Getting Out of the Approval Trap

You have much to look forward to when you emancipate yourself from this unhealthy addiction. And though it may take some time and a heap of persistence, if you choose this route you are going to like yourself and your life so much more! Among the many gifts you can anticipate:

* Independence, self-reliance You choose for yourself. You become your own cheerleader. You decide what things matter and what things don?t. People are far less likely to be able to take advantage of you when you are the primary source of your own approval. You no longer believe that others have a right to judge you. You believe that the control of your life comes from an internal place and not from the opinions of those outside of you. You believe you have the right and the responsibility to decide how the behavior and opinions of others will affect you.

* Self-confidence and self-respect. Self-confidence and self-respect come from believing in your abilities and taking responsibility for your own life. You accept yourself, warts and all. You are able to emancipate yourself from the expectations of others, opening up so many ways to get to know and respect yourself.

* Healthier, more robust relationships. When you?re not ensnared in the approval trap, you?re far better able to develop the fundamental building blocks of flourishing personal relationships: trust, mutual respect, self-respect, appropriate boundaries and a balance of power.

* Increased ability to problem-solve and reach your goals. When the approval of others takes a back seat, you are able to face the challenges in your life from a position of power. Of course, it is often wise to consult with specific people about problems and goals, but this is a far cry from depending on others to dictate what you should do. You understand that your decisions, beliefs and behaviors are powerful in determining the outcomes in your life.

* Increased ability to tolerate conflict and rejection. Because you do not consider others to be your ultimate judges and because you believe others have their own issues, you are able to respond to conflict and rejection in more adaptive ways. And with each conflict or rejection, you learn that you can become stronger.

* Decreased vulnerability to depression and anxiety. You will be less susceptible to the learned helplessness that so often factors into depression and anxiety. Learned helplessness is the state in which you believe your actions do not affect what happens in your life. The person dependent on the opinions of others so often is beset by this belief. Your own self-approval is contingent on the approval of one or more persons in your world.

The Way Out of the Trap

Okay, so you?re up to your neck in the sludge of the approval trap. Please don?t despair. Instead, let me encourage you, no matter how long you?ve been in the sludge or how deeply you?re in it, to make the changes that will set you free and keep you from returning to your own personal hell. To accomplish your escape from the trap, you will need to develop approval-free beliefs, expectations, self-talk and behaviors.

Beliefs. You need to replace old, ineffective beliefs with those that are antithetical to the approval trap.

* You are responsible for your own life. This is a key belief in living a healthy, prosperous and happy existence. When you believe that you are the center of your own life, that you are the one who decides what is important for you, and that what you think and do affects the outcomes in your life, then you make it unlikely that you?ll be addicted to approval.

* Your happiness is something only you can make happen.

* You can gain control over your reactions to the behaviors of others.

* The approval that is most important is your own.

* You get to decide what the approval of others means to you.

* The opinions of others do not have to influence what you think of yourself.

* Just because others tell you such as you are inept, lazy, stupid, a failure, a disappointment, etc., does not mean it is so.

* You can overcome the fear of disapproval.

* You are capable of making good decisions for yourself.

* Mistakes, failures and criticism need not be an indictment of you and your abilities.

* Your goals and successes are your responsibility.

* Disappointing others is not a catastrophe.

* The judgment of others does not have to be how you see yourself.

* It is counterproductive to be preoccupied with how others react to you.

* Positive relationships are based on a balance of give and take from involved parties.

* Paying attention to your own needs is at least as important as the paying attention to the needs of others.

* You are not ultimately responsible for the feelings of others. If someone else is unhappy, it is not necessarily your fault or responsibility.

* Self-criticism should be limited and constructive.

Expectations

* You don?t expect to be perfect.

* You?re realistic about what you expect from others.

* You don?t expect others to approve of everything you do.

* You expect criticism, failure, mistakes, etc., all along the way.

* You don?t expect others to appreciate the things you do for them.

Behaviors

* You identify, communicate and enforce boundaries between you and others.

* You practice assertiveness.

* You make decisions for yourself.

Just as in other addictions, extracting oneself from the Approval Trap takes information, a well-developed plan, support and a whole lot of tenacity. The rewards are most definitely worth the effort!
