ShopLocket Promises Customers They Can Sell Anything, Anywhere

Screenshot_1A new startup called ShopLocket says it's ready to serve people who want to sell things online, but don't need to create a full-blown storefront. Supposedly, co-founder and CEO Katherine Hague was part of that group herself. She wanted to sell some T-shirts on her blog and website, but she didn't need to create a full-blown Shopify store, nor did it make sense to pay the $29 monthly fee. With ShopLocket, she wanted to create something that was simpler and more affordable, while still looking professional.

HTC One S available today on T-Mobile

HTC One S

Today's the day, folks! The HTC One S is now available on T-Mobile here in the U.S., making it the first phone from the HTC One line to launch here in the states. (The HTC One X is coming May 6 on AT&T, and the EVO 4G LTE -- essentially Sprint's One X -- is coming eventually, with preorders beginning May 7.)

If you're on the fence, here are the broad strokes: It's ridiculous thin, especially considering that it's a 4.3-inch phone. It's light. It's got a power processor. It's got Sense 4, which we like a lot. And it runs on T-Mobile's 42 Mbps network. Aww, hell, just read our complete T-Mobile HTC One S review. It'll make your day a little brighter.

Scalado Album launches for Android, we go hands-on (video)

Scalado Album launches for Android, we go hands-on (video)

Scalado just released Album, its first ever Android app to land in Google's Play store. The company -- which is best known for imaging technologies such as zero shutter lag, Rewind and Remove -- usually provides software to device manufacturers instead of end users directly. Album is billed as "a simple to use, high performance, photo/video viewer with a clean and smooth user interface" that handles pictures up to 200 (!) megapixels in size. The app costs $0.99 and is available for both smartphones and tablets. It features some interesting touches, like the ability to browse geotagged images using a map view.

We had the opportunity to take Album for a spin before launch and the app offers an intuitive and responsive user experience. Beyond organizing photos into the usual bins -- like the camera roll and the folders on your device -- the main screen lets you browse content by time (monthly) and location (including nearby). You can delete, share, rotate (in place) and crop pictures, plus display the file info and turn images into wallpaper. The grid view uses animated thumbnails for the videos and supports multiple selection. While not groundbreaking, Album is a solid app and the aforementioned map view is definitely worth checking out.

Take a peek at our gallery of screenshots below (from our HTC One X) and hit the break for Scalado's demo video and PR.

Justin Bieber Posts Message To His Paternity Accuser

Bieber sends a Borat-themed tweet to the California woman who accused him of fathering her child.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> went on a bit of a <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/justinbieber" target="_blank">Twitter spree</a> over the weekend, telling his millions of followers that it was time for a "RANDOMTWITTERHOUR." </P><P> </P><P>While many of his tweets relayed innocuous thoughts on topics like Chuck Norris' pajamas, his feelings about the content of fruit salad and how his track "Boyfriend" is really about the migration of birds, there was one tweet in particular that stands out. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>At the end of his "Random Twitter Hour," Bieber had this message for Mariah Yeater, the California woman who accused Bieber in late 2011 of being her baby's father. "And now #RANDOMTWITTERHOUR has come to an end....last one....," he wrote. "Dear mariah yeeter [sic]...we have never met...so from the heart i just wanted to say..." </P><P> </P><P>He then tweeted to an audio link from the 2006 film <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/295653/moviemain.jhtml">"Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,"</a> in which Borat says, "You will never get this, you will never get it, la la la la la la. He behind his cage. He cries, he cries and everybody laughs. She goes, 'You never get this.' But one time he break cage and he 'get this' and then we all laugh. High five!" </P><P> </P><P>Bieber wasn't lying about his tweets being random as there hasn't been any news on the Yeater/paternity front since late November when Yeater promised to <a href="/news/articles/1674882/justin-bieber-baby-dna-test.jhtml">submit her son for a paternity test</a>, despite the paternity suit having been dropped. The tweet does stay on message with Bieber's denial that he had anything to do with Yeater or her baby. </P><P> </P><P>The pop singer maintained his position on the paternity accusation during the entire process, even taking his own <a href="/news/articles/1674791/justin-bieber-paternity-test.jhtml">DNA test</a> to prove that he wasn't the baby's father. "As far as the whole baby situation, it's unfortunate that it had to happen like that," he said in an interview at the height of the allegations. "People make false accusations, but things happen in this industry, and you have to keep your head high and be positive." </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

James Cameron-backed Planetary Resources to search the universe for Unobtainum

Image

Planetary Resources will reportedly announce later today that it's developing and selling low-cost spacecraft to mine asteroids close to the Earth. The space exploration and natural resources venture is led by X-Prize creator Peter Diamandis and NASA's former Mars chief, Eric Anderson -- with cash backing from James Cameron, Eric Schmidt and Larry Page amongst others. Within a decade, the company hopes to kickstart a 21st century gold rush by selling orbiting observation platforms to prospectors with significant rewards -- a 30-meter long asteroid could hold as much as $50 billion worth of platinum at today's prices. The company's own teaser materials promised that the project would add "trillions of dollars" to the world's GDP, which sounds like a film we saw recently.

If you're reading this, you might be a baboon

Scientists have found that baboons are adept at pattern recognition, being able to?distinguish between real and fake four-letter words about three out of four times.

Dan the?baboon?sits in front of a computer screen. The letters BRRU pop up. With a quick and almost dismissive tap, the monkey signals it is not a word. Correct. Next comes, ITCS. Again, not a word. Finally KITE comes up.

He pauses and hits a green oval to show it is a word. In the space of just a few seconds, Dan has demonstrated a mastery of what some experts say is a form of pre-reading and walks away rewarded with a treat of dried wheat.

Dan is part of new research that shows?baboons?are able to pick up the first step in reading ? identifying recurring patterns and determining which four-letter combinations are words and which are just gobbledygook.

The study shows that reading's early steps are far more instinctive than scientists first thought and it also indicates that non-human primates may be smarter than we give them credit for.

"They've got the hang of this thing," said Jonathan Grainger, a French scientist and lead author of the research.

Baboons?and other monkeys are good pattern finders and what they are doing may be what we first do in recognizing words.

It's still a far cry from real reading. They don't understand what these words mean, and are just breaking them down into parts, said Grainger, a cognitive psychologist at the Aix-Marseille University in France.

In 300,000 tests, the six?baboons?distinguished between real and fake words about three-out-of-four times, according to the study published in Thursday's journal Science.

The 4-year-old Dan, the star of the bunch and about the equivalent age of a human teenager, got 80 percent of the words right and learned 308 four-letter words.

The?baboons?are rewarded with food when they press the right spot on the screen: A blue plus sign for bogus combos or a green oval for real words.

Even though the experiments were conducted in France, the researchers used English words because it is the language of science, Grainger said.

The key is that these animals not only learned by trial and error which letter combinations were correct, but they also noticed which letters tend to go together to form real words, such as SH but not FX, said Grainger. So even when new words were sprung on them, they did a better job at figuring out which were real.

Grainger said a pre-existing capacity in the brain may allow them to recognize patterns and objects, and perhaps that's how we humans also first learn to read.

The study's results were called "extraordinarily exciting" by another language researcher, psychology professor Stanislas Dehaene at the College of France, who wasn't part of this study. He said Grainger's finding makes sense. Dehaene's earlier work says a distinct part of the brain visually recognizes the forms of words. The new work indicates this is also likely in a non-human primate.

This new study also tells us a lot about our distant primate relatives.

"They have shown repeatedly amazing cognitive abilities," said study co-author Joel Fagot, a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research.

Bill Hopkins, a professor of psychology at the Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta, isn't surprised.

"We tend to underestimate what their capacities are," said Hopkins, who wasn't part of the French research team. "Non-human primates are really specialized in the visual domain and this is an example of that."

This raises interesting questions about how the complex primate mind works without language or what we think of as language, Hopkins said. While we use language to solve problems in our heads, such as deciphering words, it seems that?baboons?use a "remarkably sophisticated" method to attack problems without language, he said.

Key to the success of the experiment was a change in the testing technique, the researchers said. Thebaboons?weren't put in the computer stations and forced to take the test. Instead, they could choose when they wanted to work, going to one of the 10 computer booths at any time, even in the middle of the night.

The most ambitious?baboons?test 3,000 times a day; the laziest only 400.

The advantage of this type of experiment setup, which can be considered more humane, is that researchers get far more trials in a shorter time period, he said.

"They come because they want to," Fagot said. "What do they want? They want some food. They want to solve some task."

Tesla pairs up with SolarCity, will power off-grid homes as well as cars

If you've ever dreamed of thumbing your nose at big energy and its expensive, polluting ways, then Tesla and a solar panel leasing company called SolarCity might be taking you a baby-step closer to reality. Although recognized mostly for its EVs, Tesla reckons it knows enough about batteries to solve a key problem in the solar energy chain -- namely the storage of power for use when the sun, power grid, or both go offline. The battery design, consisting of many laptop-style lithium ion batteries stacked together, was chosen after two years of research and a $1.8 million energy grant. The two companies are now waiting for tax credits from the Fed and California before rolling out the tech. And being kissing cousins -- with Elon Musk as both Chairman of SolarCity and CEO of Tesla -- certainly can't hurt.
