Conversion from 'bad' fat to good fat

Apr. 28, 2013 ? Scientists from ETH Zurich have shown for the first time that brown and white fat cells in a living organism can be converted from one cell type to the other. Their work, using mice as a model organism, provides important new insights into the origin of brown fat cells, which is a prerequisite for the development of successful anti-obesity therapies.

Two types of fat cells can be found in mammals and hence in humans: White fat cells function mainly as highly flexible energy stores which are filled in times of calorie abundance. The fat is stored in the form of lipid droplets, which are mobilized when energy is needed. Diametrically opposed in function are the so-called brown adipocytes: These cells specialize in burning energy in the form of fat and sugar to produce heat. New-born babies possess substantial amounts of brown fat and utilize it to maintain body temperature. Since it was recently shown that brown adipocytes also exist in adult humans, research has focused on understanding how brown adipocytes are formed. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to increase brown adipocyte number and activity in obese humans, allowing them to burn excess calories and thus reduce weight.

Against the current belief

It is known that both humans and mice can adapt to cold temperatures by forming brown fat cells within their white fat depots. These cells are called "brite" fat cells (brown-in-white) and are less common at warmer versus colder temperatures. However, the origin of these special brown adipocytes has remained a matter of debate. The prevalent hypothesis was that brite cells are formed from special precursor cells and are removed when no longer needed. The alternate idea of a direct interconversion between white and brown fat cells gained less attention. By demonstrating that this interconversion does occur and is one of the main contributors to brite fat cell formation, the current belief has been challenged.

Genetically labelled fat cells

To demonstrate how brite fat cells are formed the researchers in the laboratory of Christian Wolfrum, a professor at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, generated mice that allowed them to genetically label specific fat cells. These animals were kept in a changing environment: starting at 8?C for a week and for several weeks afterwards at normal room temperature. During the cold exposure, the mice formed brown adipocytes in their white fat depots -- a process called "britening." After warm adaptation the fat tissue turned white again. Using the genetic markers the scientists concluded from these experiments that white fat cells can convert into brown fat cells and vice versa. As humans have the same type of cells as mice it is likely that the same process occurs in humans upon cold stimulation.

Treatments against obesity

"To develop new treatment strategies we need to find ways to convert white into brown adipocytes," says Wolfrum. Most of the research has focused on identifying the precursor cells for brown fat cells, an approach that may be insufficient. Future work will address the question of how to manipulate this interconversion process either by pharmacological or by nutritional means.

This approach would represent a novel strategy. "Current anti-obesity therapies target the energy intake side of the equation by controlling appetite and the uptake of nutrients," says Wolfrum. The pharmacological treatments that are available are not very efficient and usually are associated with side effects. In contrast, this novel approach to treat obesity would target the energy expenditure side of the equation by promoting brown fat formation.

In this screen shot from amateur video provided by Ronahi TV, a man foams at the mouth and twitches while lying on a stretcher at a hospital in Syria. The video is consistent with AP reporting of an attack in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo on April 13, although it was not known if the symptoms resembled those triggered by a chemical weapons attack. A defense analyst who viewed the video of the victims lying on stretchers after the attack said that, while it was impossible to verify that a nerve agent caused their symptoms, they appeared to be the result of something other than traditional weaponry. (AP) ? Syrian opposition groups called Friday for international action after the Obama administration said U.S. intelligence indicates President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons. The government likened the accusation to false U.S. claims of weapons of mass destruction used to justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Washington's declaration was its strongest so far, although the administration said it was still working to pin down definitive proof ? holding back from saying Damascus had outright crossed what President Barack Obama has said would be a "red line" prompting tougher action.

The rebels accused regime forces of firing chemical agents on at least four occasions since December, killing 31 people in the worst of the attacks, and warned that world inaction would only encourage Assad to use them on a larger scale.

The Obama administration said Thursday that intelligence indicates government forces used the nerve gas sarin in two attacks.

The regime countered that it was the rebels who fired chemical weapons ? pointing to their capture of a chemical factory last year as proof of their ability to do so. On Friday, government officials repeated denials the military had used the weapons.

Both sides have used the issue to try to sway world opinion.

"The red line has been crossed, and this has now been documented by the international community. We hope the U.S. will abide by the red line set by Mr. Obama himself," Loay al-Mikdad, a spokesman for the Free Syrian Army, the umbrella group for rebel fighters, told The Associated Press.

"We need urgent action, otherwise Bashar Assad will not hesitate to use his entire chemical and unconventional weapons stockpile against the Syrian people," he said.

Most Assad opponents say the U.S. and its allies should now arm the rebels in response to regime use of chemical weapons, a step Washington has been reluctant to take for fear the weapons will end up in the hands of Islamic hard-liners. Some have urged international airstrikes against regime warplanes and rocket launchers that have wreaked havoc on rebel forces. Few, however, advocate direct international intervention on the ground.

At the White House, Obama said Friday that any use of chemical weapons by Syria would be a "game changer," though he cautioned the United States needs more evidence that Assad has used the deadly agents against his people.

He said the U.S., along with the United Nations, would seek to "gather evidence on the ground" in Syria to solidify intelligence assessments.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Friday that the U.S. is "working to establish credible and corroborative facts to build on this intelligence assessment" and to definitively say "whether or not the president's red line has been crossed."

Asked about Syria's denials, he said that "if the regime has nothing to hide, they should let the U.N. investigators in immediately so we can get to the bottom of this."

Use of chemical weapons would bring a frightening wild-card element to Syria's 2-year-old civil war, which is estimated to have already killed more than 70,000 people. Throughout the conflict, civilian casualties have been heavy as regime forces batter rebel-held towns, neighborhoods and cities with artillery, rockets and warplanes.

Still, the chemical attacks the rebels claim the regime carried out, if confirmed, would appear to be relatively small-scale and localized.

Bilal Saab, director of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, North America, said if the regime is behind them, it may be trying to make detection as difficult as possible and to maintain plausible deniability.

"The government may also feel that the time for full-on use of chemical weapons has not come yet. It may also be indirectly communicating with Western powers and testing their resolve," he said.

If the rebels were using them as the regime claims, it would be a "strategic blunder," given how it would taint the movement, he said, adding that one possible scenario is that they were carried out by extremists within the rebel movement.

In December, after rebels seized control of a chlorine factory in Aleppo, the government warned the opposition might be planning a chemical attack to frame the regime. To back up its claims, the state-run SANA news agency pointed to videos posted on YouTube that purported to show regime opponents experimenting with poisons on mice and rabbits. The origin of the videos was not known.

It is not clear exactly how many people have died in alleged chemical attacks because of the scarcity of credible information. The Syrian government seals off areas it controls to journalists and outside observers, making details of the attacks extremely sketchy.

Al-Mikdad said the opposition has documented four attacks based on air and soil samples and the blood of victims, in addition to eyewitness accounts. He said the results have been shared with Western countries, though he declined to name them.

The deadliest was on the village of Khan al-Assal near the northern city of Aleppo, where at least 31 people were killed in March.

The village is controlled by the government, and the regime accused rebels of firing a missile carrying chemical agents.

The opposition contends it was regime fire. Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said the army appeared to have hit government troops by mistake, inflicting casualties among them and then blaming the opposition. Neither side has offered evidence to back their claims.

In another alleged chemical attack, a government air raid on April 13 on the contested Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo killed at least four people and wounded more than a dozen others. Activists say doctors treating the wounded said many showed symptoms of inhaling a toxic gas, including severe vomiting and irritation to the nose and eyes.

Eyewitnesses speaking in a video allegedly taken a day after the attack and posted online by activists reported that an explosion left several people unconscious and others reporting aches and dizziness.

"There was a smell, so we went out and I felt dizzy and my eyes turned red," a young boy said.

Another video showed several people on stretchers at a hospital, some twitching and foaming at the mouth and nose.

The videos were consistent with AP reporting of an attack in the area on April 13, although it was not known if the symptoms resembled those triggered by a chemical weapons attack.

A defense analyst who viewed the video of the victims lying on stretchers after the attack said that, while it was impossible to verify that a nerve agent caused their symptoms, they appeared to be the result of something other than traditional weaponry.

"What you're immediately struck by is this is not your normal ordnance ... that it seems of a different type," said Michael O'Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"Now whether that automatically guarantees that it is a specific nerve agent, I wouldn't go so far as to say based on my knowledge. But it does have the effect, it does have the appearance of being something caused by something besides traditional explosives or penetrating metal," O'Hanlon said.

Activists reported two other alleged chemical attacks, including one in December in the central city of Homs in which they said six rebels died after inhaling white smoke pouring from shells fired on the area.

Videos of the aftermath of that attack showed men in hospital beds coughing and struggling to breathe as doctors placed oxygen masks on their faces.

"The smell was like hydrochloric acid. People started choking and I wasn't able to breath," a man identified as a rebel said in a video posted online after the attack by activists.

The video appeared genuine and corresponded to AP reporting of violence in Homs in December, although it was impossible to verify if the symptoms were triggered by a chemical weapons attack.

The Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said the group has documented the two attacks in Aleppo province, but did not have proof of the other two.

A Syrian government official denied the government carried out any chemical attacks, saying Assad's military "did not and will not use chemical weapons even if it had them." The army, he said, can reach any area in Syria it wants without them.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give official statements.

A Syrian lawmaker, Sharif Shehadeh, echoed that assertion, saying the Syrian army "can win the war with traditional weapons" and has no need for chemical weapons.

Syria's official policy is to neither confirm nor deny it has chemical weapons.

Shehadeh likened the allegations to the false accusations that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction that U.S. policymakers used to justify the 2003 invasion.

"What is being designed for Syria now is similar to what happened in Iraq," he said.

Following the Khan al-Assal attack, the government called for the United Nations to investigate alleged chemical weapons use by rebels.

Syria, however, has not allowed a team of experts into the country because it wants the investigation limited to the single Khan al-Assal incident, while U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged "immediate and unfettered access" for an expanded investigation.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said Friday that U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane wrote another letter to Syrian authorities on Thursday urging the government to grant access to the U.N. chemical weapons experts without conditions.

Insert Coin: Lightpack turns your computer display into an ambient backlight (video)

Insert Coin Lightpack turns any display into an ambient backlight

While Philips did eventually bring its Ambilight technology to PC monitors, it wasn't before others had decided to roll their own. Now you can add ambient backlighting to any computer display without any of the attendant soldering and Arduino-wrangling, thanks to the folks at Woodenshark. The team has built Lightpack, an Ambilight-esque system that'll connect to a Windows, OS X or Linux PC and project the display's colors onto the area surrounding the screen.

Plug the hockey puck-sized device into your computer, attach 10 LED modules to the back of your display and install the open-source software and you're good to go. Once ready, you can even set up custom alerts to measure CPU temperature or email volumes, and even control the lighting with your smartphone or tablet. The team has asked for the unusually specific figure of $261,962 in order to fund an initial production run of 5,000 units, with early backers able to snag one of the units for $50 instead of around $90. Interested to watch it in action? There's a video after the break, friends.

Bangladesh building collapse: Is the country's reputation among the injured?

Following the collapse of a garment factory building on Wednesday morning in Bangladesh, physicians at nearby hospitals were overwhelmed by the number of people needing attention. It appears factory owners ignored a warning not to let workers into the building when a crack was noticed on Tuesday.?

One fireman told Reuters about 2,000 people were in the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (20 miles) outside Dhaka, when its upper floors slammed onto those below. An official at a control room set up to provide information said 96 people were confirmed dead and more than 1,000 injured.?The Daily Star, a leading Bangladeshi newspaper, put that number at 106.

At the site of the collapsed?Rana Plaza building, a frantic effort was underway to find and rescue victims. Television reports showed young women workers, some apparently semi-conscious, being pulled out by firefighters and troops.

Doctors at local hospitals said they were unable to cope with the number of victims brought in.

The building collapse, which follows a November fire at the?Tazreen Fashion factory?on the outskirts of Dhaka that killed 112 people, has compounded concerns about worker safety and low wages in Bangladesh.

The two major incidents, and a third in January that killed seven people, could taint Bangladesh's reputation as a source of low-cost products and services and call attention to Western retailers and other companies that obtain products from the country. But industry people and worker's groups in the United States say the lure of cheap manufacturing costs will keep retailers and buyers turning to Bangladesh.

Edward Hertzman, a sourcing agent based in New York who also publishes the trade magazine Sourcing Journal says pressure from U.S. retailers to keep a lid on costs continues to foster unsafe conditions.?Hertzaman's clients include clothing manufacturers and retailers like PacSun, Oxford Industries Lucky,?Buffalo.

Following the Tazreen fire, giant U.S. retailer?Wal-Mart?Stores Inc. said it would take measures to alleviate safety concerns, while?Gap Inc.?announced a four-step fire-safety program.

"It is going to take much more than retailers issuing press releases or paying compensation to victims," Hertzman said. "They're going to have to stop beating up the factories and start paying higher prices."

Entry level wages in these factories start at 14 cents an hour, said?Charles Kernaghan, with the?The Institute?for Global Labour and Human Rights. The non-profit works with factory workers in Bangladesh?and other parts of the world to help better working standards.

"The companies will stay in Bangladesh?despite all the problems...In?China, a comparable wage would be at least $1 an hour," Kernaghan said.

Hertzman, whose trade publication has offices in Bangladesh, said?New Wave Bottoms Limited?occupied the second floor,?Phantom Apparels Ltd?on the third floor,?Phantom Tack Ltd?on the fourth floor and?Ethar Textile Ltd?on the fifth.

U.S. children's clothing retailer Children's Place said that while New Wave had manufactured clothes for the company in the past, it hadn't at the time of the accident.

The New Wave website listed 27 main buyers, including firms from Britain,?Denmark,?France,?Germany,?Spain,?Ireland,?Canada?and the?United States.

Cracks in building?

"I was at work on the third floor, and then suddenly I heard a deafening sound, but couldn't understand what was happening. I ran and was hit by something on my head," said factory worker Zohra Begum.

Mohammad Asaduzzaman, who was in charge of the area's police station, said factory owners appeared to have ignored a warning not to allow their workers into the building after a crack was detected in the block on Tuesday. Kernaghan, of the The?Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights?said the owner "sweet talked them into working, and assured them there was no danger."

Bangladesh, which employs about 3.6 million people in the garment industry, is the second-largest apparel exporting country in the world. But it has also gained a reputation for political red tape, worker strikes and poor working standards in its many garment factories, where factory owners have been accused by non-profits and unions of exploiting workers.

Annisul Huq, former president of the Bangladesh?Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told Reuters that the BGMEA noticed the cracks on the?Rana Plaza?Tuesday and asked the owner to take corrective steps.

"The owner should not have used the factory while the cracks had developed, but it was a day of 'hartal' yesterday and he probably got no engineers to look at it," Huq said.

Hartals, or strikes, have been a persistent problem in the country, creating uncertainties in the supply chain and bottlenecks for business operations.

In March, The?American Federation Of Labor?& Congress Of Industrial Organizations filed a petition before the United States Trade Representative to remove Bangladesh?from the list of eligible beneficiary developing countries. "The government of Bangladesh?continues to fail to take steps to afford internationally recognized worker rights," the AFL-CIO said.?

Ghosts of Tazreen?

In November, the Tazreen accident raised questions about how much control Western brands have over their supply chains for clothes sourced from Bangladesh.

A?Wal-Mart?supplier had subcontracted work to the Tazreen factory without authorisation. Since then,?Wal-Mart?has said it is trying to get a better handle on its supply chain and to monitor safety at factories that produce its goods.

The?Bangladeshi government?subsequently confirmed workers' complaints about unsafe conditions, and also said the factory owner and supervisors prevented staff from leaving the premises after a fire alarm sounded.

Wal-Mart?said Wednesday it still could not determine whether a factory in the building that collapsed was producing goods for the company.

Hertzman, the textiles broker, said the Tazreen fire has prompted his clients to pressure agents in the factories to be more accountable for safety.

"I've had two clients in the past two months who have said they need to go and inspect the factories in Bangladesh?before placing orders for private label goods made for major usa retailers," said Hertzman.

He did not want to name the clients, but said one of them supplies apparel to Costco and the other supplies young men's clothes for retailers like Ross Stores, Sears and Macy's

"Bangladesh?is the longest lead-time country and a difficult country to work in, so the only way it becomes competitive is by offering the lowest (cost). That's the Catch-22," he said.

"If the factories want to raise prices to make up for rising wages and costs, the buyers say, 'Oh why do we want to go to Bangladesh?if I could go to?China,?Vietnam,?Latin America?etc for a similar price?"

Couple that with the effusive fawning the average writer gets from well meaning friends and family members and most writers find it difficult to believe they are not all that, or not that. Which brings us to the matter at hand, how can we get better when we don?t realise that there is much to do, to learn and to polish before we can truly have a spot among the literary greats? Is it wise to sit in our little bubbles and decide to send out our writing without giving it our best effort? Is it fair on one?s audience or oneself to publish a first draft? Is it sane? If we don?t listen to or indeed encourage honest peer review and critique will we ever get past where we are to where we want to be?

Questions, questions?.questions all of us must answer if we hope to write better, to be better.

Well, today?s gist is not of the philosophical manner and so I will just proceed to the few points I wish to share, hoping that I will be a catalyst in taking your writing from here to there.
So here goes.

1.Set Your Writing Goals.

What do you want to accomplish with your writing? Is it to be a hobby that you treat shabbily while lighter weight talents hone their crafts for national and indeed global honours? Do you want to write just for the gallery? For that select group of people that guzzle up all your offerings without noticing bad pun or verb/pronoun disagreements? If you aim for the latter, then read no further, keep doing things the way you have done them. I assure you there will be no grand or noteworthy happening to disrupt your comfort zone?s workings. If on the other hand you believe that you are talented, that you have have a gift for words and a calling for creating beauty through words and world of beauty then read on. There might be a thing or two for you to glean. Afterall as @chemokopi says there is no end to learning. It is also important to know how much writing you want to do, Are you aiming for two bits of haiku and a drabble or would you rather write seven bestsellers and two poetry anthologies? Knowing how much you want to write and setting time lines to it will go along way in shaping your choices in that regard. Be bold but honest, remember your greatest competitor is your self.

2. Polish Till It Shines.

The first eight drafts are terrible ? Malcolm Gladwell

Every professional writer knows that the first draft is nothing but a warm up. Amateurs however think their first drafts are bursts of heavenly inspiration, words from the gods, pieces of pure literary brilliance that should never be touched or edited. Nonsense. The masters are masters because they have acquired certain skills and they have found out what works and what doesn?t. One thing that definitely doesn?t work is submitting the first string of words you manage to spill out on a piece of paper or on a Word document. To give your writing any chance at all you have to rewrite it. Not once, not twice not even thrice. Then when you have done that get a writer or editor whose opinion you respect to look it over for you. Don?t be satisfied with average, this is the difference between cocoa seeds and chocolate. You might have a great diamond of a story but no one will notice it unless it shines. Remember this -The best writing is not written, It is rewritten over and over again, then edited, by two paid editors ? F.W. Read.

3. Read Your Work Out Loud.

I must confess this was something I learnt fairly recently. It is easy to believe that reading aloud must have died sometime in the junior secondary years and now we can just follow with our eyes silently imbibing the gist of the story/poem. Wrong. Reading aloud helps you experience your story the way a first reader will. It stops your inner voice from interjecting words that aren?t on the page. It also gives you a chance to evaluate the entertainment potential of a piece. Something that is very important in today?s world where the written word is leaping off the page unto the stage through readings and spoken word performances.

4. Learn From The Best.

Every writer has heard the ? read, read, read? rhyme but many writers don?t know what it means. Simply, it means read the work of great writers in the genre that you want to write in. So if you want to write great romance stories then Mills and Boons, Harlequin Romances and @Myne should be regular fare on your shelf. If you are more inclined to poetry then you should keenly study the works of Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, JP Clark and @xikay. Study, don?t copy. As a friend of mine said: When you find a great piece of writing, take it home, pull it apart, study every inch, find out what makes it work then find a way to apply those techniques to your own writing. While studying other peopls?s work, you might find things that you don?t like. That?s fine, just swallow the sugar and throw away the sugar cane pulp.

Avoid poorly written prose and poetry, what you read is what you will write.

5. Write Everyday

It is a tall order, I know, but if you really want to be the village beauty then you have to endure some pain ehn? Okay, crappy proverb, but you get what I mean. Nothing good comes easy, nothing easy ends up good etc etc.To be the best in any field one thing you absolutely must have is commitment. Social scientists have gone even further to describe the 10,000 hours rule. This states that to be a world class expert in any field one needs to have spent at least ten thousand hours studying and practising that skill , craft or trade. So, you can see why this hasty scribbling-stories-for-contests attitude won?t help you. If you want to see your writing celebrated internationally you have to attend to it faithfully ? every month, every week, every day.

Well, I think I have done more than my 20 Cents or 30 Naira worth , ( I know it is not about the money , except for folks like me, but that is another post entirely. Watch out For ?Money For Hand ? The Frustrations Of Asawo Writer? coming soon. ) Please be generous, honest and gentle in the comments section, it is the only way I ll be encouraged to write part two.
What are the things that have made you a better writer? You can share those in the comments section as well . Much love and thanks for reading. Adieu

Southwest Airlines issues travel advisory warning passengers to ...

Southwest Airlines today issued a travel advisory on its website warning passengers to expect possible flight delays resulting from the Federal Aviation Administration?s employee furloughs that began Sunday.

The advisory came out as other airlines, including American Airlines, earlier today were diverted some flights from D/FW Airport to Dallas Love Field because of weather and furlough issues. Fort Worth-based American on Saturday issued a travel advisory similar to Southwest?s.

?The duration and frequency of these possible delays is unknown at this time because the FAA has not yet provided precise information to airlines,? Southwest said. The Dallas-based airline encourages customers to sign up for flight status alerts and to check local airport websites for up-to-date flight information.

On Sunday, the FAA began to furlough air traffic controllers every one day out of 10 under? automatic federal spending cuts this year. The Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and Dallas Love Field were not among the airports where the FAA expected to see serious delays on a daily basis, but it said delays still could happen depending on other factors such as weather and traffic at other airports.

The FAA attributed more than 1,200 flight delays nationwide yesterday to staffing shortages, but more than 1,400 other flights were delayed due to weather or other factors.

Xing puts a Wii U at the heart of its costly karaoke machine

DNP This is what near $16,000 Wii U looks like

Sure, we've seen game consoles modified for use beyond their original purpose, but this apparatus turns things up a notch. Pictured above is the Joysound Festa, a mobile entertainment system powered by the Wii U's hardware and software. Built by Japanese karaoke machine maker Xing, this beastly console mod is controlled from the system's Gamepad and includes the gracelessly named Nintendo x Joysound Wii Karaoke U. Pre-loaded with 90,000 songs, this party starter also ships with a set of dance, exercise, yoga and brain training videos. Already reaching for your wallet? You should know that this unique setup is Japan-only, and headed to hotels and nursing homes at a hefty price of 1,580,000 yen (around $15,884). At that price, it may take around 25 years until we see one of these bad boys up for grabs on eBay.

HTC One Review: The Competition Is Fierce, But HTC's New Flagship Rises To The Challenge

htc-one-review01Look, it's no secret that HTC knows how to put together a nice phone. Despite the quality of its wares though, HTC spent most of 2012 releasing disappointing earnings statements and being outflanked by much larger rivals -- what's a company to do in a situation like that? The answer, according to CEO Peter Chou, was to double down on innovation and design in hopes of creating a device that would truly resonate with consumers that were already up to their necks in Android phones. That device was the HTC One. Even so, plenty of questions remain. Is it really all that it?s cracked up to be? Does the One really have a chance at changing HTC?s fortunes? To answer all of the above: yes. If you're in a rush you can skip to my final thoughts here but make no mistake: the HTC One is the sort of device that deserves to be talked about.

Market tone remains positive on solid US earnings

LONDON (AP) ? The positive tone in markets continued Wednesday, a day after investors were cheered by a run of strong U.S. corporate earnings and rising hopes of an interest rate cut from the European Central Bank.

Another weak business survey for Germany, Europe's biggest economy, reinforced the expectations that the ECB will reduce borrowing costs again at its policy meeting next Thursday.

The Ifo Institute said its main index of business optimism fell to 104.4 points from 106.7 in March. Market analysts had expected a more modest decline to 106.2.

"IFO data from Germany today repeats this observation, but rate cut forecasts now look to be baked in to current prices," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG.

Because expectations of rate cuts are largely priced in now, the response in markets has been muted compared with the sharp gains made Tuesday.

Germany's DAX rose 0.4 percent to 7,687 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.6 percent higher at 3,806. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.3 percent at 6,421 ? Britain doesn't use the euro so it isn't directly affected by developments with regard to the ECB, which controls monetary policy for the 17 European Union countries that use the euro.

European markets have also been buoyed in recent days by progress in Italy to produce a government after inconclusive elections in February. The president was reelected over the weekend and on Wednesday he was expected to ask a center-left politician, Enrico Letta, to form a new executive government.

Wall Street was poised for a solid opening after its advance Tuesday ? Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures were both up 0.2 percent.

Once again the focus in the U.S. will likely remain on earnings after a stream of positive news on Tuesday from the likes of Coach, a maker of luxury handbags, and Netflix, which streams TV shows and movies over the Internet. In an after-hours statement, Apple said it will distribute $100 billion in cash to its shareholders by the end of 2015, a move that helped ease concerns over a fall in profits and a fairly cautious outlook statement.

"Generally speaking, the earnings season thus far has been characterised by better than expected earnings but for revenue to be coming in slightly below expectations," said Gary Jenkins, managing director of Swordfish Research. "Apple reported last night and whilst the results were slightly better than the recently marked down expectations, they did warn that revenues for this quarter would be below estimates."

Later, consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble, drug maker Eli Lilly and Boeing will release earnings.

Earlier in Asia, stocks rallied in the wake of the big gains recorded in Europe and the U.S. the previous day. Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 2.3 percent to close at 13,843.46, its highest close since June 2008, while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9 percent to 1,935.31.

Hong Kong and mainland Chinese stocks also climbed on expectations that the central government might take action to boost the Chinese economy after recent data showed growth lagging in the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1.7 percent to 22,183.05. Mainland Chinese shares bounced back a day after sharp drops. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.6 percent to 2,218.32 and the Shenzhen Composite Index gained 2.2 percent to 943.78.

The currency markets were relatively subdued, with the euro 0.1 percent higher at $1.3011 and the dollar steady at 99.50 yen.

Oil prices advance as traders waded back into the oil market following a string of positive corporate earnings and solid U.S. home sales figures ? the benchmark New York rate was up 72 cents at $89.90 a barrel.

Ancient Earth crust stored in deep mantle

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

Oceanic crust sinks into Earth's mantle at so-called subduction zones, where two plates come together. Much of what happens to the crust during this journey is unknown. Model-dependent studies for how long subducted material can exist in the mantle are uncertain and evidence of very old crust returning to Earth's surface via upwellings of magma has not been found until now.

The research team studied volcanic rocks from the island of Mangaia in Polynesia's Cook Islands that contain iron sulfide inclusions within crystals. In-depth analysis of the chemical makeup of these samples yielded interesting results.

The research focused on isotopes of the element sulfur. (Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.) The measurements, conducted by graduate student Rita Cabral, looked at three of the four naturally occurring isotopes of sulfur--isotopic masses 32, 33, and 34. The sulfur-33 isotopes showed evidence of a chemical interaction with UV radiation that stopped occurring in Earth's atmosphere about 2.45 billion years ago. It stopped after the Great Oxidation Event, a point in time when Earth's atmospheric oxygen levels skyrocketed as a consequence of oxygen-producing photosynthetic microbes. Prior to the Great Oxidation Event, the atmosphere lacked ozone. But once ozone was introduced, it started to absorb UV and shut down the process.

This indicates that the sulfur comes from a deep mantle reservoir containing crustal material subducted before the Great Oxidation Event and preserved for over half the age of Earth.

"These measurements place the first firm age estimates of recycled material in oceanic hotspots," Hauri said. "They confirm the cycling of sulfur from the atmosphere and oceans into mantle and ultimately back to the surface," Hauri said.

The ASUS CUBE with Google TV review

ASUS CUBE

A bold design and great software additions make the ASUS CUBE unique, but is that enough to push Google TV to mainstream living rooms?

The ASUS CUBE with Google TV is the latest premium Google TV box to come out, and it’s also one of the most anticipated. It has a unique look and design, a nifty rotating-cube user interface, and plenty of features both in the hardware and software. We’ve been waiting for it since it was first unveiled in January at CES, and now it’s here.

I’m convinced that the Google TV platform is “almost there”, and one key component to get it from a cool toy for enthusiasts to something you would find in a mainstream consumer’s living room is great hardware. The $140 price tag will help -- you can grab one from various e-tailers including Newegg --  provided the unit provides a good experience with the current Google TV software.

The ASUS CUBE is certainly unique, but is it great? Hit the break and we’ll have a look.

On Tuesday, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced new guidelines it wants auto companies to follow as they develop in-car communication systems. NHTSA recommendations are designed to limit how long a driver takes their eyes off the road to no more than two seconds at a time.

"I think people using cell phones while driving is dangerous," said Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation. "These guidelines are based on the best data and best information we have." (Read More:?GM's Wi-Fi Move Brings the Connected Car Closer)

The guidelines are voluntary for the automakers and do not require changes to infotainment and communication systems immediately. However, the Federal government is asking automakers to phase in the guidelines within three years.

Samuel Kaplan - Morocco World News

By Youssef El Kaidi

Morocco World News

Fez, April 22, 2013

The position of the United States regarding the Sahara issue remained unchanged, despite the proposal made by Washington to expand the prerogatives of MINURSO to monitor human rights, said Sunday evening the Ambassador of the United States to Morocco, Samuel Kaplan.

In his intervention at the opening of the twelfth April seminar of the Institute of the American Legation in Tangier for Moroccan Studies, Samuel Kaplan, who is about to leave Morocco after a four-year mission in the Kingdom, said that the United States continues to support ?a peaceful and consensual solution for this conflict.?

Mr. Kaplan also noted that Washington considers the Moroccan initiative to grant the southern provinces an extended autonomy under the sovereignty of the Kingdom as ?serious, credible and realistic,? noting that any solution must be the result of negotiations between the various parties of the conflict.

The U.S. diplomat admitted that the proposal to extend the powers of the MINURSO has caused consternation and anger in Morocco. This has created a tension between the two countries, but he said he was confident about the quality of bilateral relations between Morocco and the USA and their ability to overcome such disputes.

He continued that such kind of disagreements occasionally happen between allies but do not affect the strength of their relations.

The work of the April seminar continued until Monday, April 22, at the headquarters of the American Legation in Tangier, with the participation of Moroccan and American researchers and university professors, meeting under the theme: ?The strategic dialogue between Morocco and the United States.?

David Arbutina, M.D./, FACS, Medical Director, the Breast Cancer & Women?s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania (Provided photo)

The Breast Cancer & Women?s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania (BCWHI) opened its doors April 18, 2012 and has been growing ever since. ?Over the past year, the BCWHI has seen many patients from throughout the central Pennsylvania region. The Breast Cancer & Women?s Health Institute?s mission is to provide exceptional and compassionate care to women facing breast cancer.

Dr. David Arbutina, medical director of the BCWHI, believes it is important to educate women on breast health issues and provide guidance to empower them with the knowledge they need to make the right decision regarding their care.

?The first priority is to allay the fears of a patient with a possible or previously diagnosed breast cancer,? said Arbutina. ?Our goal is to gather the pertinent facts about a patient?s cancer as rapidly as possible. These facts are needed to begin the education process about which treatments are available that best match the patient?s needs and desires. Women are encouraged to take an active role in deciding what is best for them and they can do this only if they understand the science behind the treatments which are available.?

Arbutina is a board-certified general surgeon with focused expertise in breast cancer surgery. He is an expert, educator and leader in surgery who since 1988 has dedicated his career to the treatment of breast cancer. During his career, Arbutina has personally treated and cared for more than 1,000 breast cancer patients. He has also treated thousands of women with benign breast conditions and is known for his expertise in distinguishing between benign and cancerous breast disease. ?Arbutina also serves as Governor of the American College of Surgeons.

The Breast Cancer Institute is located on the Tyrone Hospital Campus and will be moving into the new Tyrone Hospital Health and Wellness Building on the Campus. Stephen C. Gildea, chief executive office of the Tyrone Hospital said, ?The Breast Cancer and Women?s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania has brought a much needed, high-quality service to patients in the area. Those that are diagnosed with breast cancer in our area now have access to an extraordinary surgeon, who is providing compassionate care complemented by exceptional attention, without having to travel many hours.?

To share the news of the BCWHI with women of all ages, a new Web site has been launched here. The new site provides information on breast health and care, services of the BCWHI and a blog written by Arbutina. Up-to-date news and events will be added as an on-going basis including new research on breast cancer and treatments.

?

The public is invited to attend the grand opening of the BCWHI?s new facilities on June 1 from 2 p.m. to 4p.m. Guests will be given a guided tour and information on new programs which will be offered including support groups.
