On November 29, Tampa Bay Online reported the settlement of personal injury claims stemming from a horrific 2009 animal attack in which Charla Nash was mauled by her employer?s pet chimpanzee.? The angry chimp tore off Nash?s face, nose, eyes, and facial bones, leaving her blind; Nash also lost her hands.? Her jaw was reconstructed and she later received a historic, full-face transplant, but hand transplants failed.? Recently, Nash agreed to settle for $4mil ? a fraction of the $50mil she initially claimed for her medical expenses, lost wages, lost future earnings, pain and suffering, and other damages.
But Nash?s experience is not totally unique.? In 2005, a California man lost his face, fingers, eye, and foot, in a very similar chimpanzee attack.? Even owners of common pets, like dogs, must use reasonable care to prevent escapes or injuries to others; however, keeping certain exotic pets on one?s property is considered an unusually dangerous activity, and federal or state laws may require greater care from owners.
In Tampa, St. Petersburg, and other areas of south Florida, personal injuries caused by exotic animal attacks are not uncommon.? Florida animal laws make it illegal to own large primates like chimpanzees, but smaller monkeys and other exotic pets can be owned with a permit.? Florida law also specifies caging requirements and control measures.??
