6-2 Jr Guard ? Chris Denson ? 17 ppg, .575 FG%, .286 3P%
6-1 Sr Guard ? Frankie Sullivan ? 16.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.6 apg
Interesting Stats

2. TO?s per game: UI ? 12 vs. Auburn ? 14
3. Steals per game: UI ? 8 vs. Auburn ? 8
More Stats
1. Auburn has attempted 192 treys compared to UI?s 343.
2. Auburn is averaging 34% from behind the arc versus UI?s 37%.
3. Auburn has collected 139 offensive rebounds compared to UI?s 160.
4. Auburn has collected 264 defensive rebounds compared to UI?s 314.
Gunners
Noel Johnson ? 18 of 38 shooting 47%
Frankie Sullivan ? 17 of 67 shooting 25%
Brandon Paul ? 35 of 91 shooting 39%
DJ Richardson ? 31 of 95 shooting 33%
Cudds keys to winning:
1. We need to protect the basketball because Auburn does a decent job of creating TO?s and minimize the unforced TO?s. Auburn has four players that average a steal per game and another two that are on the cusp at .9 spg. Allen Payne (1.6 spg) and Josh Wallace (1.5 spg) are Auburn?s two best players at creating steals. Brandon Paul (2.7 tpg) and Tracy Abrams (2.9 tpg) need to do a good job of protecting the basketball and limiting the TO?s as well as the rest of the team.
2. Keep Chris Denson from getting into the lane and scoring on the free-throw line. He?s only played in the last four games and Auburn is 3-1 with a loss to Bowling Green. He?s a scorer and a very good one when getting into the paint (.575 FG%). In four games he?s got to the free-throw line 27 times, but from behind the arc he?s only shooting .286 3P%. That may be deceiving though, he?s only put up seven shots from behind the arc. Regardless, I?d like to keep him in front of me and out of the lane.
3. Turn up the heat on defense. Auburn is TO prone and I?d like to see us create a minimum of 15 TO?s with our defense. Frankie Sullivan is Auburn?s Phil Pressey and he?s averaging 3.1 TO?s per game. Auburn is not an impressive passing team similar to the Illini (14 apg to 14 tpg this year). Brandon Paul (1.5 spg), DJ Richardson (1.5 spg), and Tracy Abrams (1.4 spg) will have the opportunity to get steals and hopefully we can capitalize in transition and score some easy buckets.
4. Let?s do a better job of scoring the basketball. I thought we played with good pace against Missouri and the majority of the time took decent shots. We put up seventy-four shots against Missouri and hopefully we can get to seventy shots again versus Auburn. Unfortunately we only connected on twenty-five of those shots and thirty-two of the seventy-four were behind the arc. I?m okay with shooting that many threes because that?s what defines this team, but we only connected on eight of those thirty-two bombs and that?s pretty bad. In games like that, we need more balance and hopefully other players, besides Brandon, will understand that and put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket.
5. We need more production off the bench. Against Missouri, Bertrand was the only player to score off the bench with thirteen points. Sam McLaurin only had two rebounds in fourteen minutes and Henry added only one stat to his line with one TO in five minutes. The bench needs to step up against Auburn and give Coach Groce more production going into the Big Ten season.

Totally pumped for this game, I think Illinois plays well, start to finish and puts a hurt on Auburn. As much as Auburn can create turnovers, I think the Illini perimter guys will get a lot of deflections and easy point opportunities. ILL 80 AUB 65

Thanks for the writeup, Dcudds. Very thorough and a good read. A couple of points...1. I wouldn't call a guy who has taken 38 shots in 11 games a gunner. That's less than 3.5 shots per game.
2. "scoring the basketball." Gawd, I HATE that term. Score points? Yes. Score baskets or buckets? Okay. But I've yet to see anyone scoring a basketball. Sadly, almost everyone uses that term now. Please don't take this personally; I just hate the phrase.
Illinois should blow Auburn away, but I've seen us play down to the level of their competition too many times this year. We need a blowout win to show our resiliency from the Mizzou game.

But he has MS Paint versions of Self, Crean, and Tisdale doing unusual things even when they're in no way involved in the upcoming game!

This group of players should not lose to a team that is 5-6 ... especially at the UC. With Groce on the bench, I am not worried about them being focused.

I agree, he's not a gunner in that he's putting up 3PA like DJ or Brandon, but I always look at the opponents two top 3PA shooters. He's only put up 38, but he's a good shooter. Hopefully we can limit his looks tomorrow.
Sorry you dislike the term "scoring the basketball." I got a chuckle out of that one. lol. I'd love to see us blow out Auburn tomorrow and we have the talent to do it. Whether we win by ten or more, I just want to see some improvement from the Missouri game, especially with our FG% and bench scoring/production.

Good stuff. My only hope is for an easy win so the bench can get some meaningful game action before B1G play begins.

I want to go to the game tomorrow, but don't have ticks. If we don't get in, does anyone know of an Illini bar in the city?
