Brrr, say beach bathers on Paris city quai (AP)

PARIS ? Instead of bikinis, windbreakers and umbrellas are populating Paris riverbanks as the city unveils its annual urban beach on a quai-side highway.

The capital dumped 5,000 tons of sand on what is usually a traffic-clogged roadway and opened the makeshift beach to the public Thursday.

Unusually cold and wet July weather greeted this year's Paris Plage, which runs for a month and offers concerts, games and beach activities.

That didn't dampen the enthusiasm of sand sculptors visiting from several countries, or of Christopher Sisoko, a 10-year-old Parisian visitor.

He said, "I think it's great to see the beach, because there are people who cannot go on holiday because they can't afford it, whereas here, everybody can come because everything, all the activities are free."
