If you want to start a handyman business, one of the best ways to distinguish yourself from your peers is to get really good at customer service. This is actually not hard at all to do, especially if you have the right attitude. And once you get known for just being a good person to work with, and someone who cares (which is how customers perceive good customer service) you will start getting all the referrals you can handle without ever spending a dime on advertising.

The most basic step towards good customer service is simply returning phone calls. You would not believe how many handymen and contractors seem to be utterly unable to return phone calls. You do not have to return calls the second you get them (that might be dangerous if you are up on a ladder) but returning them within an hour is a good idea.
