It?s easy for law enforcement agencies to crack your iPhone?s security code

Think your iPhone?s four-digit lock-screen code is enough to keep away prying eyes? Think again. A new video from Sweden-based Micro Systemation, which sells special tools to law enforcement agencies and military companies, shows just how easy it is to crack that code and gain access to your iPhone in just a few minutes.

More information on the process is outlined by Andy Greenberg at Forbes. Apparently, Micro Systemation?s XRY application can crack an iOS (or Android) passcode very quickly, gain access to all your data, decrypt it, and display all kinds of information including GPS location, call logs, contacts, messages and even key strokes. The XRY uses a similar method to access the root file system that jailbreakers do.

Mike Dickinson, Micro Systemation?s marketing director, says ?business is booming? and the company?s revenue is growing quickly. Though there are potential legal repercussions to authorities gaining access to private user data, this is clearly a growing industry. Are we likely to see the device manufacturers step-up security to counter them?

Peter Dziedzic: Engaging the Birth Control Question: Revitalizing ...

The highly-debated birth control mandate, under which religiously-affiliated institutions like hospitals and universities may have to provide birth control coverage in employee health plans, has drawn attention and responses from religious and non-religious leaders alike. This issue reveals the need for more critical conversations within religious institutions and points to a deeper concern at hand -- the limitations and boundaries of religious freedom in a changing American cultural and societal landscape.

While I, as a young Catholic, agree that the Catholic conversation around birth control, sexuality and contraceptives (among other issues) has stagnated and does not fully address changing current realities, I also agree with Catholic and other religious leaders who say that this mandate encroaches on the religious freedoms of Catholics and of other faith communities who may hold similar views.

Diverse voices from all camps have come out against this proposed mandate. The issue at hand is not healthcare policy, but the government's incursion into the sphere of religious life, the division of religious communities and institutions, and declaring what is, or is not, "religious enough" in relation to secular policies. Healthcare reform is needed, but are we willing, in the process, to sacrifice religious freedoms and ignore the moral objections of religious communities?

This mandate has moved to the center of nationwide concern due to the possibilities it opens up regarding the involvement of secular institutions in questions of religious identity. A similar blurring of divisions and authority can be noted in a recent controversy at Manhattan College in New York and St. Xavier University in Chicago, in which the National Labor Relations Board ruled these institutions were not sufficiently religious to fall outside of the agency's jurisdiction.

While the issues of labor laws and the complex reality of the state-federal political relationship need to be navigated responsibly, these actions reveal a growing involvement of secular institutions and rulings in religious affairs. This affects not only Catholics, but all religious communities in the United States. If these mandates and rulings succeed and set precedent, what are possible further consequences? How far can the government go in setting boundaries on religious identity?

These threats to religious freedom have also come from elsewhere, most recently in the news of the undercover NYPD investigation of Muslims in New York. All of these developments point to the need for our discourse to evolve. Just because we as a nation have struggled with questions of religious freedom and religious pluralism and identity for over two centuries does not mean that we have come close to fully engaging the reality of pluralism, secularism, and democracy. As a society, we are uncomfortable with questions of religion and pluralism, and we are afraid to challenge established, constructed boundaries. We must find ways to critically address issues of religious freedom in an evolving world. Young leaders must be central in encouraging this societal shift.

The interfaith youth movement offers a vehicle for this changing discourse. At DePaul University, the largest Catholic university in the United States, we have provided state-mandated birth control options for students and staff for years, but we have also carved out critical spaces in and out of the classroom to have engaging, respectful conversations on these issues. In growing together in these questions, we are committed to common action for the common good, and religious freedom is a necessary component of this communal welfare.

The interfaith youth movement and organizations like Religious Freedom USA and Interfaith Youth Core are working to promote new spaces for this discourse on issues of religious freedom, and these conversations must continually move forward. Young leaders, religious and non-religious, must work together to catalyze change that is needed in our society and discourse.

Faith communities must address these critical questions -- contraception and birth control, interfaith and intrafaith relations, LGBTQ inclusiveness, among others -- in succeeding years and decades, but secular incursion into these spheres and conversations is not the way to achieve these shifts. We must accept this as a call to action, a call to revitalize the conversations in our own communities and work together to promote positive, holistic change in our world. Faith communities must begin to creatively and critically address these issues, and only then can we responsibly engage the pressing questions that demand our reflection and attention.

'Thermal cloak' hides from heat

The range of physical phenomena that scientists are trying to "cloak" objects from has a new entry - heat.

French researchers have shown how to apply the ideas of "optical cloaking" - the endeavour to make a Harry Potter-style cloak - to the thermal world.

The applications for the idea, outlined in Optics Express, stretch beyond hiding from thermal-imaging devices.

It could also be used to direct and move heat around in temperature-sensitive electronics.

There has been a tremendous amount of research into what is called transformation optics since it was first proposed as a means to an invisibility cloak in 2006.

So far, all of the cloaking approaches have limitations that keep them well short of the invisibility promised in fiction. But more recently, similar ideas have been put to use to shield objects from magnetic fields or even from sound or seismic waves.

All of these approaches aim to manipulate the peaks and troughs of waves to achieve their cloaking effects.

But as Sebastien Guenneau of the Institut Fresnel in France explained, the transfer of heat is a subtly different business.

"Heat isn't a wave - it simply diffuses from hot to cold regions," he said.

"The mathematics and physics at play are much different. For instance, a wave can travel long distances with little attenuation, whereas temperature usually diffuses over smaller distances."

The trick was to apply the mathematics of transformation optics to the equations describing diffusion; the result, Dr Guenneau and his colleagues found, was a means to shuttle heat around at will.

The approach is fundamentally different from temperature-changing cloaks that heat and cool actively to mimic objects of different temperatures and have proven to "hide" a tank.

In the new technique, the researchers propose a cloak made of 20 rings of material, each with its own "diffusivity" - the degree to which it can transmit and dissipate heat.

"We can design a cloak so that heat diffuses around an invisibility region, which is then protected from heat," Dr Guenneau explained.

"Or we can force heat to concentrate in a small volume, which will then heat up very rapidly."

It is this ability to direct and concentrate heat that may find first application, for instance in the microelectronics industry, where the heat load in specific areas remains a difficult challenge to engineers.

Facebook app lets you add 'enemies'

10 hrs.

Let's face it. Not everyone you're "friends" with on Facebook is really your friend. ?What's more, there's plenty of stuff on the social network and in real life that you don't "like."

Acknowledging that the real world isn't such a rosy place, a college professor has created?EnemyGraph, a?Facebook plug-in that highlights the things (and people) that generate dislikes. So gripers, if you're sick of all the positive vibes on Facebook,?EnemyGraph?is the perfect app for you!?

Not only does it the app let you add Facebook friends you really (or jokingly) consider "enemies," it also lets you dislike pages, groups, celebrities, movies, bands, etc. ?You can also see who or what on Facebook is most "disliked" by other users.?

Some of the top "Trending Enemies" on the app include the Westboro Baptist Church, the "Twilight" series by Stephanie Meyer (I'd be willing to admit a dislike of sparkly vampires, though I am entertained by the movies) and racism.

Dean Terry -- director of the new Emerging Media + Communications program in The School of Arts and Humanities at The University of Texas at Dallas -- is the instigator behind EnemyGraph, which begins with the assumptions that mutual dislikes connect people as much as they things they like.

As Terry explains in this blog post:

"Most social networks attempt to connect people based on affinities: you like a certain band or film or sports team, I like them, therefore we should be friends. But people are also connected and motivated by things they dislike. Alliances are created, conversations are generated, friendships are stressed, stretched, and/or enhanced."

EnemyGraph is a critique the social philosophy of Facebook. On it?s developer splash page Facebook invites us to ?Hack the Graph? - and so we did. We give them a couple of weeks at best before they shut us down for broadening the conversation and for ?utilizing community, building conversation, and curating identity? their three elements of social design. EnemyGraph is a kind of social media blasphemy.

The ironic thing is - and this is a byproduct of the project rather than the intention - we are generating a whole new set of personal data that could potentially be mined. I found it a compelling tool for self expression, at least as powerful as the likes list on your Facebook profile page. Often, it tells you a great deal about a person in a way that an affirmative list can not.

I'm giving?EnemyGraph?a try, and so far the activity has been minimal. I did add "Oranges" as something I dislike (intensely) and found pages to click on to add to my "Enemies" list.?

The app also runs "dissonance queries" that match something a friend declares an "enemy" (and again, that could be most anything) with something you like and put it into a "Social Dissonance" box on the app's page. As Terry puts it, "Relationships always include differences, and often these differences are a critical part of the fabric of a friendship. In the country club atmosphere of Facebook and it?s platform such differences are ignored. It?s not part of their 'social philosophy.'"

Right now, the app tells me, "There is currently no social dissonance between you and your friends. The world's demons rest." (Then again, none of my friends are using this app yet, so that's probably why nothing shows up. Looks like you and your Facebook friends have to add the app to make this work.)

But I know, were my Facebook friends to use this, that there would be plenty of such reports generated.?Just because you're friends doesn't mean you always agree on everything. My friends and I have many differences, but I suppose for the most part, we agree on the big things -- including things we dislike.

Also, who's to say that there aren't already some "enemies" amongst your friends? Some people actually abide by that whole keep your enemies close adage, and by checking out their updates, you can do just that.?

Terry admits that "enemy" is not exactly the right word for what he's trying to show, in that "the fact that you can make pretty much any object, place, or thing that has a FB page an 'enemy' EnemyGraph is in some ways an unfortunate name. So it?s not just a list of people. In fact you can have an entire list with no people on it at all. In a way we are misusing the word ?enemy? just as much as Facebook and others have misused 'friend.'"

He told The Chronicle of Higher Education?he didn't even know "if Facebook would even allow his plug-in application to pass the company's approval process, and even though it did, he still believes administrators will shut it down if it becomes popular."

Would you use this app??

University of Gothenburg

Almost all 9- to 24-year-old Swedes use the internet. Most of them do so daily, and the older they are, the more they use it. Yet, this does not mean that they have ceased using traditional media, says Professor Olle Findahl, who has conducted a study on young people's media habits on behalf of NORDICOM at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Admittedly, people in this age group do watch TV and listen to radio and recorded music somewhat less today than 30 years ago. The same trend can be observed for reading, especially when it comes to educational textbooks and nonfiction. However, children and adolescents still use traditional media more than the internet. In fact, schoolchildren (age 9-14) spend a whole 75 percent of their media time on traditional media; for the age group 15-24 the proportion is 60 percent.

Similar to what happened when television came about in the 1950s, it seems like people use the internet to complement and not substitute older media. The internet provides young people with music and films. Then there is the entirely new behaviour that is made possible through social networks contacts with like-minded individuals who share the same interests.

The social network Facebook has a greater reach among young people than newspapers, and almost the same reach as TV. And the reach of the digital music service Spotify comes close to that of radio. However, this does not mean that everything that has to do with the internet automatically becomes popular. For example, relatively few young individuals use tablet computers, e-books and the Twitter microblog service. Yet the use of so-called smartphones has increased by several hundred percent in only two years.

It should be noted that there is no direct negative correlation between internet use and the use of traditional media. Instead, the most intense internet users are also heavy consumers of traditional media.

Southern white rhinoceros populations, once thriving in zoos, have been showing severely reduced reproductivity among the captive-born population. San Diego Zoo Global researchers have a possible lead into why the southern white rhinoceros population in managed-care facilities is declining: phytoestrogens in their diet might be contributing to reproductive failure in the females.

"Understanding why the captive white rhinoceros population has been dwindling for decades is an important part of protecting the future of this species," said Christopher Tubbs, researcher with the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. "Our work is the first step toward determining if phytoestrogens are involved in this phenomenon and whether we need to reevaluate captive white rhino diets."

After elephants, the southern white rhinoceros is the world's second largest land animal. This rhino species also occupies another listthat of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's "near-threatened" species. Wild populations face poaching and sport hunting, but captive populations of this animal are declining due to reproductive problems in the females. These include cystic endometrial hyperplasia; cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers; and ovarian cysts.

San Diego Zoo researchers believe the diets of the captive population offers much concern. Specifically, phytoestrogens, such as isoflavinoids found in the alfalfa and soy that they eat, activate their estrogen receptors more than those of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, another captive population that receives a similar diet but has better reproductive success.

The study, published in the March issue of Endocrinology, compares populations that are doing well with populations whose reproductivity is placing them at risk, citing diet as a key difference between the two.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Introduction To Taxes Calculator

Taxes calculators are tools found on the web that provides taxpayers with an easy, prompt and effective way of computing their taxes. Developers of taxes calculators aim to make computing taxes easier and faster. Taxes calculators are very much accessible and make the lives of taxpayers easier because of the speed at which taxes are computed.

TurboTax Basic is very much just like the free version, but it contains attributes for sending W-2 and 1099 data, TurboTax return of the previous year and data from ItsDeductible and Mint website.Almost all taxes calculators found on the internet are free of charge and the user is only required to create an account and register. The person is then required to enter their taxable income and the tax calculator will do the rest of the work for them.Civil status, deductions, credits, contributions (charitable and retirement) and dependents are just a few of the many details that taxes calculators may ask for.

TurboTax Business & Home is for S Corps, partnerships, C Corps, or multiple-owner LLCs. Since most online tax calculators are free, the taxpayer need not hire a professional accountant anymore and be charged on an hourly basis. Because of this, the payer can cut down on expenses.
TurboTax Home & Business is an additional version. It offers all the full functionalities of TurboTax Premier along with expanded an interview that covers Schedule C for self-employment.

There are plenty of positive aspects in using TurboTax. Besides from saving time and effort, it ensures that tax return calculations are 100% precise. But of course, there is no such thing as perfect technology. When using taxes calculators, one single ?mistake by the user? might possibly result in unfavorable effects. In case a person by accident types in a wrong number, the calculator will supply an answer that the payer will think of as correct.

It?s quite impossible that this calculator could identify correctness of data should the value keyed in by the user is mistaken. This is exactly why it is crucial that when working with online software, you?ve got to be mindful with the details you provide because regardless of how useful the tool is; the actual end result will depend on the individual using it.

Survival of Hospitalized Heart Failure Patients May Vary by Ethnicity

TUESDAY, March 13 (HealthDay News) -- Hispanic and white patients' chances of surviving hospitalization for heart failure can differ based on their level of heart function, according to new research.

For the study, researchers reviewed data from Hispanic and white patients treated between 2005-2010 at 247 U.S. hospitals participating in the American Heart Association's Get With the Guidelines-Heart Failure program. The findings are published March 13 in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure.

Among patients with normal heart function, Hispanics were more likely than whites to survive their hospital stay. Among patients with reduced heart function, there were no differences in hospital survival between Hispanic and white patients, the investigators found.

The study authors also pointed out that quality of care was the same for both groups of patients and improved over the five-year study period.

"One possible reason for the survival difference between heart failure patients with preserved heart function is that Hispanics tend to be younger and may not be as sick as hospitalized white heart failure patients," lead author Dr. Rey Vivo, a fellow in the cardiology division at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston, said in a journal news release.

"That could be because Hispanics are more likely to have inadequate or no health insurance. So, they are more likely to go to the hospital for their care, versus seeking care in doctors' offices or outpatient clinics," Vivo explained.

Youku to buy Tudou, creating China online video giant

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's top two online video companies are joining forces, with Youku.com buying smaller rival Tudou Holdings Ltd in an all-stock deal worth more than $1 billion, creating an industry leader with more than a one-third share of a market that is losing money as it battles rising costs.

The two U.S.-listed companies have been bitter rivals, locking horns in courtroom battles over alleged copyright infringement and unfair competitive practices.

Both companies this month reported a net loss for last year, pinched by rising costs for Internet bandwidth, content and mobile video services.

Bringing the two together is a good move for a highly competitive industry with many players fighting over more than 450 million Internet users, analysts said.

"This creates China's biggest video site, but it doesn't create a YouTube - they still have less than 50 percent market share," said Bill Bishop, an independent analyst based in Beijing.

Shares of Tudou, which is 9 percent owned by Sina Corp, soared 159 percent in early trading on Monday in New York to $38.30 from Friday's $15.39 close. Partly reflecting the tough competition, Tudou shares, which debuted in August, had consistently traded below their IPO price of $29 each.

Youku stock surged as well, gaining 15 percent to $28.80. Shares in Baidu, China's top search engine, lost 1.2 percent while Renren Inc, dubbed China's Facebook, saw its stock gain 4.3 percent.

Youku currently leads the fragmented Chinese online video market with a 21.8 percent share, ahead of Tudou's 13.7 percent, according to Internet researcher Analysys International.

"We know online video is way too competitive. There are 10 players, where there should be only one to two," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of Shanghai-based RedTech Advisors.

"After this merger there are still too many players in the industry," he said, noting others in the market such as Sohu.com Inc, Baidu, and Tencent Holdings Ltd, which is trying to develop an online video platform.

"These are not small, insignificant players. So even though this is a step in the right direction in terms of consolidation, there's still a long way to go," Clendenin added.

Far from stifling competition, though, one rival even welcomed the move.

"From an industry perspective, Youku and Tudou's deal is conducive for the healthy development of the sector," iQiyi, Baidu's online video platform, said in an email to Reuters.

"The cost of purchasing copyrights in the market will be more effectively controlled with fewer ... online video companies. It will also reduce the competition for bandwidth and market talent."

NO MORE SPARRING

Once the deal is completed, the combined entity will be named Youku Tudou Inc, and headed by Youku Chairman and CEO Victor Koo. Tudou's CEO Gary Wang will join the new entity's board of directors.

As of Friday's close, Youku's market value of around $2.85 billion was six times that of Tudou. Under the terms of the deal, Youku stock and ADS holders will own around 71.5 percent of the new company, with the rest held by Tudou shareholders and ADS holders.

The merger will save the new company $50 million to $60 million over the next 18 months, although it will maintain two separate platforms, which cater to different audiences, executives from the two companies said.

"The fact that we are the two strongest brands in the market, the content scale as well as the ability to have two differentiated brands ... will make us both much stronger competitors," Koo said in a telephone conference.

Koo, also the founder of Youku, which was formally launched in 2007, added that the merged company was targeting to outgrow other competitors in the market although he declined to comment on when it was expected to break even.

Founded in 2005, Tudou -- which means potato in Mandarin and alludes to the image of an Internet couch potato -- focuses on user-generated content and producing its own drama serials.

"It (the deal) is a sign of how difficult this market is and both companies have probably realized how hard the road ahead would be if they went the independent route," Bishop said. "It should help them get to profitability. Tudou's earnings were released last week and were horrible."

"I imagine this will help other companies in the sector that are trying to list, by reviving interest in the sector. It will also pull up other stocks such as Renren, which could now become takeover targets," he added.

The two companies have sparred publicly in recent months, with Youku filing a lawsuit against Tudou earlier this year seeking 4.8 million yuan ($762,000) in compensation, saying it incurred losses because of claims by its smaller rival that Youku had misused copyrighted material, the official Xinhua news agency reported in February.

The dispute began in December when the companies traded accusations of stealing and reposting videos from each other's sites.

Goldman Sachs, Allen & Company LLC and China Renaissance Holdings Ltd are financial advisers for Youku, the two companies said in statement.

Morgan Stanley acted as lead financial adviser and Credit Suisse as co-financial adviser for Tudou on this deal, they said.
