Beware of Google Glass re-sellers, especially those asking for $15K on eBay

Google Glass, the wearable camera/display combo that has everyone excited, isn't available for sale just yet ? but that's not stopping at least one eBay user from auctioning off a device he or she can't even hand over to you.

"I've been selected as an early adapter [sic] for Google's upcoming release," an auction listing read on Wednesday, "you are buying a brand new unopened pair of Google's Project Glass glasses." The seller references Google's #ifihadglass application process, the only way for folks to enter the company's Google Glass Explorer program if they hadn't pre-ordered a device during the Google I/O 2012 conference last June, and explains that he'll be able to pick up the shiny new gadget thanks to his application being among the 8,000 chosen ones.

And that's where one of the many issues with the auction listing begin.

You see, Google won't be notifying the individuals selected as part of the #ifihadglass application process until mid- to late March, meaning that the seller couldn't possibly know that he or she will be eligible to purchase one of the very first publicly available Glass units for $1,500. Additionally, the #ifihadglass terms strictly forbid those who are invited to purchase Glass from transferring their invitations. You can bet that the terms of purchase will include similar stipulations.

"So what if it's against Google's rules? Like anyone will ever find out," you might say. But the reality is that Google Glass will, like most mobile Android devices, be associated with a Google account. Meaning that it shouldn't be difficult for the company to catch on if a member of the Glass Explorer program decides to hand his or her gadget to someone else.

As far as the auction initially mentioned goes, there are plenty of other things that make it scream "Scam!" and make me worry for the person who bid $15,900 on it. Like the fact that the seller's previous auctions include a "mason jar with trapped human soul."

Unsurprisingly, the auction disappeared from eBay before it ran its course.

Symbolism, in different moods, on Capitol Hill

Debo Patrick Adegbile was born some 12 years after Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. That incident occurred in 1955. Late Wednesday morning, 46-year-old Adegbile was moving to take his place at the podium in the Supreme Court chamber in Washington at the very moment that President Barack Obama and the leaders of Congress were unveiling the Rosa Parks memorial statue in the Capitol, across the street?a little more than 100 years after her birth.

It was poignant symbolism of the kind that often unfolds in the high councils of Washington. But the celebration on the Capitol side of the street was markedly more upbeat than the somber mood that Adegbile confronted inside the crowded chamber of the Supreme Court.

Adegbile is an African-American, as is the president, and as was Rosa Parks, one of the heroines of the civil rights movement. The young lawyer is now the senior staff attorney of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and it was his task on Wednesday to urge the Supreme Court not to strike down the federal law that everyone?even its current critics?agree was America?s most successful civil rights law: the Civil Rights Act of 1965. In extending that law for 25 years in 2006, Congress gave it this title: the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act.

?Mr. Chief Justice, and may it please the Court,? Adegbile began. He would continue for 15 minutes, fielding questions from the bench, including some hard ones from Justice Antonin Scalia. Perhaps fortunately for Adegbile, he was not at the podium when Justice Scalia had belittled civil rights legislation by calling it ?racial entitlements? that are passed by large majorities in Congress because the lawmakers are politically wary of voting against them.

Once before, the Supreme Court had considered striking down the key sections of the re-enacted Voting Rights Act, but stopped short of doing so. That was in 2009. At that time, the court did attempt to send a message to Congress that the law was vulnerable constitutionally, if Congress did not modernize its enforcement formula to reflect the fact that ?the South has changed.?

Since then, the states and some of the local governments that have to obey the law?s toughest demands (those are restricted to those jurisdictions that had the worst records in racial discrimination in voting in 1972) have intensified their constitutional attack on it, since Congress did not react at all to the court?s message of four years ago.

Adegbile, alongside the federal government?s top courtroom advocate, Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., sought to persuade the justices on Wednesday that the law is still needed, and it is still needed mainly in the same states that have been covered since the law?s first enactment.

It was clear, though, that at least four?and probably five?of the justices retained the deep doubts about the law?s constitutionality that they had expressed at a hearing four years ago. In addition to Scalia, they were Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Anthony M. Kennedy (and, probably, Justice Clarence Thomas, since he has openly contended that the law was invalid, although he remained silent Wednesday).

Justice Kennedy did give some passing hints that, in the final reckoning, he might not be prepared to strike down the law in its entirety, suggesting that it may be the only effective legal weapon the government has to deal with racial discrimination in voting, where it continues to exist.

The law in its current form clearly had the support of Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor (Kagan and Sotomayor were not yet on the court when the law?s validity was last explored). Justice Stephen G. Breyer expressed some skepticism about the coverage formula for the law, but seemed on the whole to want the law to be kept on the books.

Just as the prospect of a 5-4 split, with the majority against the law, was beginning to take at least preliminary form as the court hearing wound down, President Obama across the street was in the midst of his remarks in Statuary Hall. Rosa Parks is the first black woman to have a statue in that memorial theater.

?Our minds fasten on that single moment on the bus,? the president commented. ?Ms. Parks alone in that seat, clutching her purse, staring out a window, waiting to be arrested. That moment tells us something about how change happens or doesn?t happen, the choices we make, or don?t make. ? In a single moment, with the simplest of gestures, she helped change America?and change the world.?

He was talking about an incident in Alabama. And Alabama was also on the Supreme Court?s mind, in a case from that state?s Shelby County. The timing very likely was a coincidence, but symbolism often happens that way.

Workplace romance gone bad? - Business Management Daily

Not every romance ends happily ever after with a storybook wedding. But with the passage of time, most breakups don?t leave a lingering mess. That?s not necessarily true of workplace romances gone sour, where the former love birds may remain in regular contact with each other.

It?s especially difficult if one of the workers continues to pursue his beloved. That can quickly become a case of sexual harassment.

When that happens, don?t hesitate to fire the guilty party, especially if he shows signs of instability, irrationality or other disturbing behavior that makes you fear for workplace safety.

Recent case: Joseph and his co-worker Alicia had a romantic relationship for two months over the summer. The two broke up, but by Christmas, they were communicating again. Although they were no longer involved in a relationship, Joseph let Alicia stay at his house after she became too intoxicated to drive home after a happy hour event.

That didn?t change Alicia?s feelings, but by spring, Joseph began showing up uninvited at Alicia?s house. He sent her a series of text messages begging her to rekindle the romance.

She responded that she didn?t want to and that he was ?freaking? her out.

At one point, Alicia had to enlist the help of a neighbor to make Joseph leave her yard. Undaunted, Joseph kept texting and emailing through the night and the next day.

Alicia complained to her supervisor, who reported the problem to HR. It conducted an investigation and interviewed those involved, including Joseph. The HR representative explained that his behavior was inappropriate and told him to leave Alicia alone. During the interview, Joseph cried and declared that his attentions were neither unwelcome nor harassment. But he also indicated he couldn?t help himself and announced he would at least continue to walk past Alicia?s desk. The company concluded that Joseph had violated its harassment policy by refusing to leave Alicia alone.

It fired him and he sued, alleging he was the victim of harassment. He claimed Alicia had twice berated him at work.

The case was dismissed. The court said the employer was free to terminate someone who refused to follow direct orders to leave a co-worker alone. It didn?t matter that the objectionable behavior leading to the investigation took place outside the workplace. (Lucchesi v. Day & Zimmerman, No. 10-4164, ED PA, 2012)

Now that blogging has become a national past-time for fun and for profit, everybody is a writer. Or maybe I should say, everybody SHOULD be a writer.? Especially if you plan to compile your blog posts some day, take a cue from journalism to write your e-book, staring with each blog post.

Reporter, editor and blogger Michelle Rafter recently posted a concise list of basic writing items on the topic of how to write a lead like a journalist:

?A lead is your first chance to hook someone into clicking through and reading your entire story. If you?re writing for websites, the lead might be the only part of your story that shows up on the front page, other than the headline, so it?s got to be good enough to entice readers to want more?

information marketing and journalism

Take A Cue From Journalism To Write Your E-book

Also known as the 5 Ws lead or the straight news lead, this is the classic opening to a news story, the one they teach you first in journalism school. In it, you summarize the main aspects of an event, whether you?re covering a robbery, basketball game, pope?s resignation or results of a presidential election. The news lead shares information by answering the following:? Who, What, Where, When, Why and How (sometimes).?

You cannot go wrong when you plan your information marketing e-book with these important questions, and that means sticking to them in blog posts as well.

Cheryl Pickett?s guest post on The Future of Ink this week includes another useful blogging and writing tip to consider when you?re writing your e-book:

?Books, whether print or digital, are a lot like bridges. People buy nonfiction in particular expecting it to take them from where they are now, needing some information, to where they want to end up, informed and maybe inspired too.?

Renee Zellweger Botox Speculations Rise At The Oscars (PHOTOS)

Renee Zellweger garnered a lot of attention on the Oscar red carpet last night. But it wasn't her glimmering Carolina Herrera gown that seemed to grab people's focus, but rather her face. Specifically, its lack of movement.

Powerful blast rocks Damascus; no word yet on casualties

Reuters

A man inspects a house that was damaged by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al Assad in the Harasta area of Damascus on Monday.

By The Associated Press

BEIRUT ??Syria said Monday it is prepared to hold talks with the armed rebels bent on overthrowing President Bashar Assad, the clearest signal yet that the regime is growing increasingly nervous about its long-term prospects to hold onto power as opposition fighters make slow but persistent headway in the civil war.

The offer, by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem during a visit to Moscow, came hours before residents of Damascus and state-run TV reported a huge explosion and a series of smaller blasts in the capital, followed by heavy gunfire.

State-run news agency SANA said there were multiple casualties from the explosion, which it said was a suicide car bombing.

The proposal marked the first time that a high-ranking regime official has stated publicly that Damascus would be willing to meet with the armed opposition. But al-Moallem did not spell out whether rebels would first have to lay down their weapons before negotiations could begin ? a crucial sticking point in the past.

The regime's proposal is unlikely to lead to talks. The rebels battling the Syrian military have vowed to stop at nothing less than Assad's downfall and are unlikely to agree to sit down with a leader they accuse of mass atrocities.

But the timing of the proposal suggests the regime is warming to the idea of a settlement as it struggles to hold territory and claw back ground it has lost to the rebels in the nearly 2-year-old conflict.

Opposition fighters have scored several tactical victories in recent weeks, capturing the nation's largest hydroelectric dam and overtaking airbases in the northeast. In Damascus, they have advanced from their strongholds in the suburbs into neighborhoods in the northeast and southern rim of the capital, while peppering the center of the city with mortar rounds for days.

Monday night's explosion struck about 800 yards?from Abbasid Square, a landmark plaza in central Damascus. It was followed by several other smaller blasts thought to be mortar shells landing in various districts of the capital. The blasts and subsequent gunfire caused panic among residents who hid in their apartments.

Shifting momentum
On Thursday, a car bomb near the ruling Baath Party headquarters in Damascus killed at least 53 people, according to state media.

While the momentum appears to be shifting in the rebels' direction, the regime's grip on Damascus remains firm, and Assad's fall is far from imminent.

Still, Monday's offer to negotiate with the armed opposition ? those whom Assad referred to only in January as "murderous criminals" and refused to talk with ? reflects the regime's realization that in the long run, its chances of keeping its grip on power are slim.

Asked about al-Moallem's remarks, U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the offer of talks was a positive step "in the context of them raining Scuds down on their own civilians." But he expressed caution about the seriousness of the offer.

"I don't know their motivations, other than to say they continue to rain down horrific attacks on their own people," Ventrell told reporters in Washington. "So that speaks pretty loudly and clearly."

If the Assad regime is serious, he said, it should inform the U.N. peace envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi of its readiness for talks. Ventrell said the regime hasn't done that yet.

Andrew Tabler, a fellow at the Washington Institute, said called the offer "a sign of weakness."

"I think everybody knows, including Bashar Assad, that they (the regime) can't hang onto the whole country," Tabler said.

Mustafa Alani, an analyst with the Gulf Research Center in Geneva, said the regime has "reached the conclusion that they are heading toward a major defeat eventually, and this is the right time to negotiate."

"They are not losing miles every day, but they are losing substantial ground every day. So the regime is not genuine (in its offer) because it has changed, it's genuine because it is responding to a major shift in the balance of power on the ground," he added.

Alani cautioned, however, that the regime is also eager to keep the idea of talks alive in order to forestall any Western decision on arming the rebels. As long as the possibility of negotiations is still on the table, the United States and the European Union ? which have so far provided only non-lethal aid ? will be reluctant to open the flood gates on weapons for the opposition, he said.

Strategic delays?
"The whole regime tactic is to delay supplying arms, to buy time," Alani said. "The regime can show good will. Whether they're a viable partner or not is a different story."

It's also unclear who exactly the regime would sit across from at the negotiating table.

The dozens of armed groups across Syria fall under no unified command and do not answer to the Syrian National Council, an umbrella group of opposition parties that the West recognizes as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

At least one group offered a lukewarm response Monday to al-Moallem's proposal.

The head of one group, Free Syrian Army chief Gen. Salim Idriss, said he is "ready to take part in dialogue within specific frameworks," but then rattled off conditions that the regime has rejected in the past.

"There needs to be a clear decision on the resignation of the head of the criminal gang, Bashar Assad, and for those who participated in the killing of the Syrian people to be put on trial," Idriss told pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Arabiya TV.

He said the government must agree to stop all kinds of violence and to hand over power, saying that "as rebels, this is our bottom line."

Syria's 23-month-old conflict, which has killed more than 70,000 people and destroyed many of the country's cities, has repeatedly confounded international efforts to bring the parties together to end the bloodshed. Russia, a close ally of Assad and his regime's chief international advocate, offered Feb. 20, in concert with the Arab League, to broker talks between the rebels and the government.

With the proposal, which the Kremlin would be unlikely to float publicly without first securing Damascus' word that it would indeed take part, Moscow ratcheted up the pressure on Syria to talk to the opposition.

Russia Syrian situation 'at a crossroads'
Russia has shielded Assad's government from U.N. action and kept shipping weapons to the military, but it is growing increasingly difficult to protect the regime as the violence grinds on.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov repeated his call Monday for Syria to negotiate with the opposition, saying before meeting al-Moallem that "the situation in Syria is at a crossroads now." He also warned that further fighting could lead to "the breakup of the Syrian state."

Past government offers for talks with the opposition have included a host of conditions, such as demanding that the rebels first lay down their arms. Those proposals have been swiftly rejected by both activists outside Syria and rebels on the ground.

Both sides in the conflict in recent weeks have floated offers and counteroffers to hold talks on the crisis.

In a speech in January, Assad offered to lead a national dialogue to end the bloodshed, but said he would not talk with the armed opposition and vowed to keep fighting. The opposition rejected the proposal.

This month, the leader of the Syrian National Coalition, the umbrella group for opposition parties, said he would be open to discussions with the regime that could pave the way for Assad's departure, but that the government must first release tens of thousands of detainees. The government refused, and even members within the coalition balked at the idea of talks.

Speaking to reporters Monday in Cairo, SNC chief Mouaz al-Khatib accused the regime of procrastinating and said it had derailed his dialogue offer by not responding to the coalition's conditions.

"We are always open to initiatives that stop the killing and destruction, but the regime rejected the simplest of humanitarian conditions. We have asked that the regime start by releasing women prisoners and there was no response," he said. "This regime must understand that the Syrian people do not want it anymore."

Reversal on Rome meeting
The coalition also finds itself at odds with its Western backers. Initially, it said it would boycott a conference in Rome that is to help drum up financial and political support for the opposition. The SNC said it had suspended its participation in the Rome meeting because of the indifference of the West and the coalition's Arab allies over the regime's attacks on the Syrian people.

Walid al-Bunni, a spokesman for the Coalition, said later Monday that the group has reversed its decision following a phone call between al-Khatib and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Al-Bunni told Al-Arabiya TV the decision was made based on guarantees al-Khatib heard from western diplomats that the conference would be different this time. He did not elaborate.

Kerry on Monday urged rebel leaders not to skip the meeting and insisted that more help is on the way.

Kerry made a public plea at a joint news conference with British Foreign Secretary William Hague and also called al-Khatib, leader of the Syrian Opposition Council, "to encourage him to come to Rome," a senior U.S. official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Meanwhile, the fighting inside Syria rages on.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group reported heavy clashes Monday near a police academy in Khan al-Asal just outside Aleppo.

Rebels backed by captured tanks launched an offensive on the facility Sunday. Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman said at least 13 rebels and five regime troops were killed.

In another part of Aleppo, rebels downed a military helicopter near the Mennegh airport, where there have been fierce clashes for months.

A video posted online by activists showed a missile being fired, a trail of white smoke and the aircraft going up in flames. Voices in the background shouted, "God is great!" as a man raised both hands in celebration.

The video appeared to be authentic and corresponded to other AP reporting.

Samsung 'Godiva' pops up at the FCC with lessthanideal timing

Samsung's 'Godiva' may be one of Verizon's worst-kept secrets of the past several weeks, with leaks involving both benchmarks and photos. There's even less of mystery involved now that the device has passed through the FCC's testing. Showing under its SCH-i425 name, the smartphone carries the requisite CDMA and LTE bands, including support for future AWS networks. GSM roaming and NFC are also lurking below the phone's surface. The approval is good news for Verizon, whose mid-range device is closer to reaching stores, although it might come too late to draw many customers' eyes -- when the Galaxy S IV is right around the corner, we have a hunch that most attention will be focused squarely on Samsung's high end.

If they have made the dedication, you can help someone quit smoking by supplying your complete, non-judgmental help. That indicates not informing them they are silly or foolish if they do not stop. Be conscientious concerning their circumstance. Keep in mind; it?s an obsession that needs to be broken, just like an addict or an alcoholic needs to wean off their fixation.

You?ve determined it costs the threat, or that it just isn?t visiting take place for you. It?s comparable with the smoker, although the risks are far worse. For them, remaining to smoke is less unpleasant than giving up so they?re willing to take the threat. Do you really need to know the best ways to aid an individual to quit smoking:

The trick is to learn how to make giving up smoking cigarettes less distressing for your man, however initially you need to persuade the individual to accept the difficulty. Initially, permit?s look at the entire process of smoking. Smoking is an emotional activity.

It appeases something within the person. The easy act of putting hand to mouth and supplying something for the lips to realize goes back to the days of container feeding. For individuals who like to eat, it?s meals that pacify their stressed power. Smokers relate having a cigarette to loading a missing needle.

Get your man to think ahead to just what he would certainly like from life. Aid your man to recognize just how smoking might obstruct those regimens, whether it?s the money or loss of health. Make him realize that the reason he began smoking cigarettes is no longer pertinent. Smoking is commonly a stress-reliever, approximately the cigarette smoker believes, when as a matter of fact smoking cigarettes places a lot more anxiety on the body.

Among the very best treatments is deep breathing, instead of breathing in nicotine, tar and various other horrid and risky chemicals. This physical exercise helps to oblige the lungs to remove the built-up chemicals in his system.

Nokia Lumia 520 hands-on (update: video!)

Nokia Lumia 520 handson

Did you think the Nokia Lumia 620 was a solid enough smartphone to shake up emerging markets, thanks to its low cost? Say hello to the Lumia 520, which at an estimated cost of $183 will be one of the (if not the) least expensive Windows Phone 8 devices once it comes out later this quarter. It's attracted a commitment from T-Mobile in the US (timeframe not yet specified) and other carriers around the world, so we're likely going to see a lot more of this little beaut in the future. Naturally, it's time for a face-to-face introduction.

The Lumia brand as a whole is very consistent in its overall design language, so it's not difficult to tell that the 520 fits perfectly in the lineup. It will be offered in five of Nokia's usual colors: cyan, red, black, yellow and white. If you're interested in swapping covers, snap-on backs will be available -- but beware, the actual back of the device itself isn't removable. The right side of the phone houses three buttons: the volume rocker, power and the dedicated shutter button. A 3.5mm jack sits on top, whereas the micro-USB charger is on the bottom.

While it felt a little cheaper (as one would expect with such a low-end handset), it still seemed to be held together quite solidly. Interestingly, the phone's weight wasn't distributed across the device like we saw on the 720, but instead the middle of the device seemed pretty hollow, even though it held its fair share of circuitry and other components. Take a peek below if you're interested in a full photo tour of the 520, and continue reading for more impressions and specs.

Michelle Obama's 'Evolution of Mom Dancing' rocks YouTube (+video)

First lady Michelle Obama joined late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon in a dance skit to promote her 'Let's Move' anti-childhood obesity program. 'Evolution of Mom Dancing' went viral on YouTube.

On Friday night, Mrs. Obama joined Mr. Fallon ? both were dressed as suburban moms ? for a dance routine called the ?Evolution of Mom Dancing? ? a take-off on Judson Laipply?s wildly popular video ?Evolution of Dance? (more than 200 million views so far).

Steps included "Go Shopping, Get Groceries", "Driving the Station Wagon?, "Oh My God, I Love This Song", and ?Where?s Your Father (Get Him Back Here).?

Michelle Obama: 10 quotes on her birthday

Social media and the blogosphere went nuts. ?The first lady demonstrated an uncanny ability to make the lamest dance moves look cool,? wrote Daniel Politi on Slate.

One tries to imagine Mamie Eisenhower or Pat Nixon doing "The Sprinkler." Bette Ford or Hillary Clinton (before she became a US Senator and Secretary of State) maybe, but probably not either of the Bush first ladies.

Fallon suggested a Michelle-Hillary ticket for president in 2016. But the first lady said she had her eye on another post-White House job. ?I hear that when Jay Leno retires that 'The Tonight Show' position is going to open and I'm thinking about putting my hat in the ring,"?she joked.

The President?s dancing skills inevitably came up.

"How about Barack, is he a good dancer?" Fallon asked.

"You know, I give him a B," Mrs. Obama said, tactfully. "His dancing is right here in the pocket. He's got like three good moves. But they're all right here," she said while dancing with her hands by her hips.?

Dancing with Fallon is part of an effort to promote Mrs. Obama?s "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign, which marked its third anniversary this month.

Besides the appearance on "Late Night," Mrs. Obama discussed the initiative while in New York City during segments taped for broadcast Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and Thursday on "The Dr. Oz Show," the Associated Press reports. Next Wednesday, Mrs. Obama embarks on a two-day promotional tour, with stops in Clinton, Miss.; Chicago; and Springfield, Mo.

For the second anniversary of "Let's Move," she and?Fallon?turned the East Room of the White House into a playground. They did pushups, twirled hula hoops, and competed at dodge ball and tug-of-war before the first lady triumphed over the comedian in a climactic potato sack race.

Border Patrol Mechanic Saves Woman And Child From Car Submerged In Canal (PHOTO)

One mechanic has added another tool to his belt.

On Wednesday morning, a U.S. Border Patrol mechanic saved a woman and her 2-year-old daughter after their car became submerged in a canal.

The incident began when the woman, driving near Interstate 8 in El Centro, Calif., lost control of her vehicle and veered into the water. According to the Imperial Valley Press, as the car went under, the woman and her 2-year-old daughter managed to climb onto its roof.

Meanwhile, the unidentified Border Patrol mechanic, who was driving near the canal, saw that the pair was "in need of urgent assistance," Agent Fabian Morales told the paper.

The mechanic stopped his car and helped them from the roof of the car to the canal bank.

This isn't the first rescue to take place in water.

In January, a sheriff's deputy pulled two women from a car sinking into Lake Ray Hubbard in Texas. The rescue was captured on the patrol car's dashboard camera.

Earlier this month, the NYPD rescued a pair of boaters who fell into Jamaica Bay.

Urijah Faber and Court McGee take UFC 157 wins

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Urijah Faber and Court McGee got back on the winning track at UFC 157 on Saturday.

Faber got a first-round submission win over Ivan Menjivar. Faber and Menjivar started the fight with a rolling takedown and Faber ended up on top. He worked the top position until Menjivar got back to his feet. Faber held on, and while attached to Menjivar's back, Faber swung around and sunk in a rear naked choke. Menjivar tapped at 4:34 in the first round. The Anaheim crowd erupted for "The California Kid."

It was an important win for Faber after he lost a title fight to Renan Barao in July. The win puts him at 27-6, with five of his losses coming in title fights.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

In earlier action, Court McGee punched his way to a decision win over Josh Neer. McGee used an effective strategy early on of working Josh Neer's body. Throughout the first round, Neer was hobbled by McGee's body punches. But in the second, McGee worked more on headshots. Though it wasn't as effective, McGee outstruck Neer. In the final round, McGee worked the ground game and controlled Neer while still leading on strikes. All three judges saw it 30-27 for McGee.

It was McGee's first fight at welterweight.

?I felt great at 170 lbs. This was a great move for me. I felt stronger, faster and had a lot more gas. I was told by FightMetric that I broke the record for most significant strikes ever in a welterweight fight and feel great. I could have stopped it, maybe, early with body shots but I was glad I put on a good performance.?

After the win, McGee's record is 15-3. Though he won "The Ultimate Fighter," he also lost two fights in 2012.

Best WWE Actor and Actress announced

This weekend, all eyes once again turn to Hollywood, where a gaggle of the industry?s brightest stars will gather to celebrate the craft of acting and to congratulate themselves over the course of the four-hour spectacle known as The Academy Awards.

There will be dresses and jewelry worn that are worth more than the GDP of small island nations, and speeches that will drag on for far too long, detailing the struggle of being beautiful and talented and rich in a world that just wants to love them. There will be (faux) gracious winners, thanking the ?other talented people? in their category who didn?t win, and there will be (faux) gracious losers, doing their best to grin and bear it while the camera is focused upon them.

And, of course, pretentiousness will be par for the course.????????

At WWE, however, we don?t believe in pretension. But we do recognize acting ability, and we?re certainly not above giving credit where credit is due. So for the first time ever, WWE.com has decided to hand out awards in the Best WWE Actor and Best WWE Actress categories.

It was tough narrowing down the field for these prestigious awards, but after many intra-office discussions (read: fights) and interviews with a bevy of Superstars and Divas, we?re confident that, just like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, we?ve done our due diligence to represent the vast array of talent under consideration.

And so, without further ado, WWE.com presents the first-ever Best WWE Actor and Best WWE Actress winners ... ????????????

Tiny tweezers and their big influence on bustling proteins: Scientists investigate molecular 'clothespins'

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Tiny molecular tweezers have a remarkable impact on bustling proteins: Three research groups from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), the Chemical Genomics Centre of the Max Planck Society in Dortmund and the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung in M?lheim found that the molecular tweezers designed by Professor Frank Kl?rner at the UDE can be used to regulate protein -- protein interactions by selectively trapping certain residues of the protein -- and stick like a clothespin.

The research groups of Thomas Schrader (UDE), Christian Ottmann (Chemical Genomics Centre) and Elsa Sanchez Garcia (MPI f?r Kohlenforschung) believe that this might be a promising approach for applications in medical research, as the water soluble tweezers act without inducing toxicity or explicit side effects.

The scientists have tested their small tweezers on proteins that have influence on many processes in the human body. "We also wanted to know how they work," says Dr. Elsa Sanchez Garcia, leader of a Max Planck research group at the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung. The chemists have found out that although their tweezers prefer to bind at the amino acid lysine, the protein surrounding of the lysine influences the trapping of the tweezers. Thus, with computer simulations Dr. Sanchez Garcia and her colleague Kenny Bravo Rodriguez have shown which type of lysine the tweezers prefer -- and why that is the case. Their work also allowed to lay down rules for predicting the behavior of the tweezers in the presence of proteins with several lysine residues.

Although the tweezers research is at early stages, their potentiality makes it worth for medical researchers to have a closer look at these results. The 14-3-3 adapter proteins (14-3-3) that the scientists used for their experiments are small recognition proteins that influence many physiological processes by binding their targets via short peptide sequences and modulating their function. For instance, they are able to stabilize certain tumor suppressors. Because of their important role in many biological processes, 14-3-3 proteins are prospective therapeutic agents against severe disorders, such as cancer.

The three research groups published their findings in the Nature Chemistry.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? The tiny night monkey is with Martha Silva 24 hours a day, nestled in a wool pouch inside her coat or beside her while she sleeps. Eight times a day, she feeds milk to the five-inch baby like an attentive mother.

The long hours of monkey mothering don't bother the 54-year-old Colombian woman, she said, because she already raised two children.

"To me there is no difference. You have to look after each the same. When you give them the bottle, you have to make sure they don't choke," said Silva, who works with the neonatal unit of Bogota's Wildlife Reception Center, part of the capital's environment ministry.

Silva, who has children aged 20 and 30, began working at the center west of Bogota in 2000. She has nurtured species ranging from birds to turtles to primates.

"I carry them with me for a couple of months, in general, or the time that is required," she told The Associated Press. Her husband and daughter help her with the household chores and cooking while she is occupied with a baby animal.

Now she is looking after the night monkey, a member of the Aotus genus, which lives in the tropical forests of South America, including Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador. Night monkeys got their name because of their unusual nocturnal habits.

"When I'm working, I make sure he doesn't get out of the little bag I have. If there is sun, I take him out of the sun," she said.

Silva never gives her animal charges names so they don't become seen as pets. In the long term, the center aims to return them to the wild.

Her latest baby, a male night monkey with dark fur, beige brows and large, protruding brown eyes for night vision, arrived at the center on Feb. 4, weighing a scant 100 grams, about a quarter of a pound.

It was brought in by a man who said he found it abandoned on the side of a highway in Colombia's eastern plains near Meta province, said Judith Cardenas, the center's chief biologist. The monkey was about 5 days old when it arrived, and the man said he couldn't bring himself to leave it to die, Cardenas said.

Biologists at the center don't how this baby ended up being orphaned, but they say the mother may have been killed or perhaps the baby strayed off. Cardenas said Amazon-region monkeys are often hunted for meat, for experiments or as pets.

Silva, a pony-tailed woman with nails painted emerald green, made a small bag of brown and black cloth squares to hold the monkey, which is still too young to walk. They sleep together and Silva takes the monkey to the center each day on her bicycle, the baby snug in the wool bag.

Every three hours, the monkey must be fed delactosed milk with vitamins added, Cardenas said. In the wild, adult night monkeys eat leaves, insects and small lizards and frogs.

When he grows up, the monkey will weigh 800 to 900 grams (1.75 to 2 pounds) and stand about 34 centimeters (13.4 inches), Cardenas said, adding that he will look like "a medium-sized teddy bear."

She said this type of primate passes the first three or four months of its life clinging to or hanging from the back of a parent as it swings through the trees. Orphaned, they need a substitute mother, like Silva with her wool bag kept close to her body.

Having substitute mothers for orphaned baby monkeys has been used in other parts of the world and in Colombia in recent years.

The idea, Cardenas said, is to let a baby monkey grow and then place it in a large cage in the center, next to another monkey of the same species. If they accept being in the same cage together, the center and environmentalists will begin a process of trying to introduce them into the Amazon jungle with a monkey group.

"This kind of primate lives in family groups, with a father, mother and children ... They are a bit like us," said veterinarian Claudia Brieva, who coordinates the center's rescue and rehabilitation unit.

She said an older orphaned monkey can't be released alone into the jungle. A baby can be accepted by another family, however, or create its own, she said.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists a dozen types of night monkeys on its Red List of threatened species. Though none is listed as endangered, several are suffering declining populations.

In Colombia, Brieva said, "Their natural habitats are being destroyed by the expansion of the agricultural frontier, by the indiscriminate cutting o the forests and jungle."

Silva says she has raised two other baby monkeys and both of those were freed in different parts of the country. She hasn't heard anything about them since.

"It is like with a child. You are at peace because they are going to be in their natural habitat," she said.

By James B. Kelleher, Reuters

The state of Texas on Thursday executed a man convicted of killing his former girlfriend in 1994 by dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire.

Carl Henry Blue, 48, was put to death by lethal injection at the state penitentiary at Huntsville, said the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m. local time.
