Van Gogh Starry Night A Painting Filled With Passion And Bold Color

This tortured artist like many of his contemporaries lived and died in abject poverty. Vincent van Gogh died at the age of 37 disillusioned and believing himself a failure having sold only one painting. Little could he imagine that decades later his works like Van Gogh starry night would sell for record prices at auction and he would be hailed as one of the greatest artists of all times.

His entire life span was one of high emotion, depths of despair and with little or no belief in himself and his talent. His first works were somber and dark but his best and most remembered paintings were done in a short span of three years before his untimely death. These were filled with bold brushstrokes and color that seems to leap from the canvas.

Classified as a Dutch post-Impressionist his style of bold color and rough raw beauty dominated the work of other artists in the 20th century. Although he sketched in his childhood he did not start painting until he was almost 30 years of age. In the short time up to his death he produced more than 2100 artworks. This port folio consisted of 860 oil paintings and more than 1300 watercolors, prints and sketches. These were made up of self portraits, still life flowers and landscapes.

Starry Night depicts the landscape as seen from his window in the sanitarium. One can only image him gazing at this scene at night and painting from memory the next day. This painting is considered by many as his best work and is one that is reproduced in many forms throughout the world.

Amongst his most famous and well known works people always include his Sunflowers series which is a range of paintings of these flowers in various forms in and out of a vase. Many of these paintings are to be seen in art museums around the globe. His still life Irises, The Potato Eaters and The Red Vineyard which hangs in Moscow's Pushkin Museum are also well known paintings.

Of his delightful Night Cafe painting which is displayed in the Yale University's Gallery of Art in the United States he is said to have express the thoughts that in this particular painting he wished to show that even in a cafe a person could lose their mind and reputation and even go so far as to commit a criminal act. During his productive phase he painted numerous self portraits that were excellent examples of his style and art.

The list of the top 10 highest prices paid for oil paintings include two Van Gogh paintings. At number 5 is the Portrait of Dr Gachet which was bought by a Japanese businessman. Listed as ninth is the Self Portrait without Beard painted in 1889 which was sold in 1998.

Vincent van Gogh once said "To do good work one must eat well, be well housed, have one's fling from time to time, smoke one's pipe, and drink one's coffee in peace." He proved that through adversity, spells of madness and self-doubt one can create paintings like Van Gogh starry night filled with beauty that will inspire people into infinity and beyond.
