Ipswich, MA (PRWEB) June 24, 2011

EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has released the fourth of five series from the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection. American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection: Series 4, includes more than 1,200 titles dating from 1853-1865. While the collection?s primary focal point is the Civil War, it also presents a diverse record of the continuance of daily life for many Americans?both leading up to and during the war.

American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection: Series 4 is designed to provide researchers with a unique look at America during a very complex time in the 19th Century. In addition to news from the battlefront, the collection includes information on a wide range of subjects including science, literature, medicine, agriculture, women?s fashions, family life and religion.

The subjects included in the collection present researchers with a broad perspective on this era. The content reveals the increasing diversity and affluence of the American population coupled with all of the political difficulties and the rising tensions that lead to the Civil War. Researchers will also gain a deeper understanding of the changing life and culture of America?s people by exploring the diverse subject matter covered in the collection such as: psychiatry, gardening, freed African-Americans, temperance, the Irish Question, Freemasonry, the U.S. Postal Service and dentistry.

American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodical Collection: Series 4 is available through the state-of-the art EBSCOhost? Content Viewer , specifically designed to meet the needs of scholars and researchers by enabling them to navigate historical content in new ways. This interface allows researchers to navigate historical content in a manner that is fast and natural while preserving the possibility of serendipitous discovery that is a highlight of doing historical research with hard copy primary documents. EBSCOhost Content Viewer replicates the experience of browsing and reading the original archival material while also allowing users to explore, manipulate, collect, take notes and export content.

The collection also includes the Reference Shelf feature which provides contextual essays, terminology guides, and citation instructional assistance in a variety of styles. The contextual essays, written by experienced historians, provide overviews of important titles in the collection and connect them to broader themes in American history.

American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection: Series 4 is fourth of the five series collection that includes digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals never before available outside the walls of the American Antiquarian Society, the premier research library documenting the life of America?s people from the Colonial Era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. EBSCO partnered with the American Antiquarian Society in June 2008 to create the American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection which will contain more than 7000 periodicals estimated at more than nine million pages of content when completed in 2012.
