QC Flag Football: Battle of the Sexes

CHARLOTTE, NC- Who says women can't play football?

Ladies just joined the Queen City Flag Football League and their eyes are already on a national championship.

Sunday's practice turned out to be a battle of the sexes.

"You just have to be ready for the ball. It's a lot tougher than when you're playing in a girl's league. The rules are a lot more challenging, it's a lot faster, so you just have to be ready to get the ball," said Ma-trice Outlaw, a player or QC Elite.

Outlaw had a few big plays against the guys. Her speed and great catches are breaking the mold of the long-time men's game.

"Nine? times out of 10, we're not going to beat the guys, but that's not why we're here. We're here to make ourselves better, better athletes, and more importantly to create this experience we'll share when we are old and can barely pick up a spoon," said Christa Cohen, a QC Elite player.

Most of the ladies are former college athletes who practice one to two times a week and train individually.

"Try to get in the gym when you can and if not, it will definitely show out here on Sunday," said Outlaw.

Right now, over 300 men play in the league. That's compared to three teams made up of only 40 ladies. The goal - to have six women teams and create their own league.

"Then we'd like to get at least eight to 10 teams over the next two seasons and then build to about 15 or 16 teams by next year," said Jim Rezac, QCFFL Commissioner.

While they prepare for a national championship in January, they players say they're building strong friendships, staying active and whipping up on guys any chance they get.

"We are really here defying the odds. I mean, how many girls can come out here and play with the guys and compete," said Cohen.
