Starbucks to donate to RED for World AIDS Day
NEW YORK (AP) ? Starbucks Corp. is donating a portion of its proceeds on World AIDS Day to help fight the disease.
The company announced Thursday it would give five cents to the Global Fund of the RED foundation for each hand-crafted drink it sells on Saturday in the United States and Canada. The coffee shop is also partnering with iTunes, offering a digital $30 gift card that is divided into two $15 certificates to iTunes and Starbucks. Five percent of the proceeds to those gift cards, sold online, will also be donated to RED.
RED was founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver and links with brands to help raise money to fight AIDS. It benefits the Global Fund, which uses the money for HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.

IBM awarded MoD property management contract ...
The MoD's Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has awarded IBM a contract to help make the running of its ?24 billion property portfolio more energy and operationally efficient.
DIO is responsible for the management of around 4,000 separate sites worldwide, including military barracks, land, air and naval bases, and military training grounds.
Using IBM?s smarter buildings software and services, DIO expects to reduce building operating costs and find ways to better use its existing real estate.
DIO will use IBM technology to replace its "outdated legacy IT environment" and create a new centralised information management system to allow faster analysis, said DIO.
Andrew Manley, DIO chief executive, said, ?IBM analytics technology helps us continue our work in creating a world-class infrastructure to put DIO at the leading edge of the technology transformation process happening right now across the MoD.?
The IBM TRIRIGA system will provide an integrated property management platform comprising of software and consultancy services. This will give DIO central visibility of its property and data on how efficiently they are being used.
A geospatial mapping capability, created by business partner Esri UK, will provide a real-time visualisation map to display the scope of infrastructure and assets.
The new system will be launched in a number of "capability releases" through to April 2014, said the DIO. The potential value of the contract has not been disclosed.
Georgina O'Toole, an analyst at TechMarketView, said, "We understand that IBM will collect and process data from the lower level systems such as those associated with the National Housing Prime (NHP) contract let in 2011.
"We know that Steria already holds a contract to provide a housing management system to DIO for the management of the housing estate. It may well be that an interface will be required between the Steria and IBM systems."
After the selection of Atlas (led by HP) for the current core Defence Information Infrastructure (DII(F)) programme, said O'Toole, other suppliers had to focus on delivering complex software development and integration projects in order to maintain a presence.
"As DII(F) and other core contracts are restructured the infrastructure and applications supplier landscape within UK defence has the potential to be severely disrupted over the next few years," said O'Toole.
The MoD revealed this week that between 2009 and 2011 it spent a whopping ?3.6 billion on IT and telecommunications for use across the department and armed services.

Adult slow-pitch softball is one of the most popular recreational sports in the city.
On any given Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday, thousands of players -- men and women of all levels-- are playing softball.
Bragging rights will be on the line Dec. 14-16 when the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department puts on its King of the Hill Softball Tournament.
Recreational and competitive divisions are available for men, women and coed teams.
All of the games will be played at various times at Marty Robbins Fields, 11600 Vista Del Sol; Blackie Chesher Fields, 9143 N. Escobar; and Northeast Regional Fields, 11270 McCombs.
This annual event is a slugfest of the "best of the best" in the city.
"This is one of the premier softball tourneys in the city for those that love to play softball or love to watch the game," said Gregory Edmunds, recreation specialist with the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department.
Today is the final day for teams to register for the tournament. The registration fee is $150 per team. Teams can register at www.elpasotexas. gov/parks or in person at Chalio Acosta Sports Center, 4321 Delta.
"My crew of nine will be out in force for the weekend tournament along with doing our daily chores each week of preparing 75 to 80 different fields for various sports," said Dennis Elengold, a recreation sports coordinator, said of his grounds crew. "This tourney is a great way to showcase our city to people that participate
from out of town."Robert Garza, tournament co-chairman, expects a huge turnout.
"The coed division usually has 30 to 40 teams and the men's division has upwards of 30 teams," he said, noting that the women's division has fallen off in recent years. "The tourney has open registration and is open to any team in El Paso and the surrounding area. Teams come from places such as Portales, New Mexico, and other outlying areas of Texas."
Awards will be given to team champions and runners- up, along with individual T-shirts for the top two teams in each division.
The tournament, now 5 years old, has gathered a great following of softball enthusiasts even though the weather can be quite chilly. Teams seem to love the atmosphere and camaraderie and, of course, being called King of the Hill.
After this tournament, players will take a year-end break before a new league starts in late January.
Registration for those leagues will start in mid-December at the Acosta Sports Center or online at the Parks and Recreation website.
The fee is $380 for men's, coed and women's teams for a 16-game regular season.
The coed division is the most popular as many players bring their families out to watch.
The competition will be tough and exciting to decide this year's King of the Hill as well as later on for the more than 350 teams that participate in El Paso Parks and Recreation leagues.

Valentino haute couture exhibition opens in London
LONDON (AP) ? A new exhibition celebrating the life and work of legendary fashion designer Valentino is opening in London.
The exhibition at Somerset House showcases over 130 handmade Valentino designs worn by the world's most glamorous women over the past 50 years, from Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Jackie Onassis to Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Valentino, whose full name is Valentino Garavani, is now 80 and retired from the fashion house he founded in 1960.
The exhibition, which opens Thursday, focuses on haute couture ? exquisite gowns and outfits that took hundreds of hours of painstaking work to create.
Highlights include a pearl-encrusted wedding dress worn by Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece in 1995 and the velvet black-and-white gown worn by Julia Roberts to the Oscars in 2001.

The Philippines' chief tax collector is constantly thinking about targets. Sometimes she picks up an assault rifle and hits them.

In July 2010, newly elected President Benigno Aquino III made Kim Henares commissioner of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) because he wanted a tough tax sheriff ? and he got one who's taking aim at the country's legion of tax cheats.
?
Aquino gave Henares presidential guards, but the tax lawyer and accountant said "I should know how to shoot their guns, just in case."
?
The president, a gun enthusiast, gave her lessons at shooting ranges. The 52-year-old Henares, who packs a pistol, now can wield an M-16 and SG552 Commando.
?
Her no-nonsense approach appears to be helping pull in more tax, which is pivotal to meeting a government goal ? getting rating agencies to award the Philippines investment-grade status.
?
Historically, tax collection has sometimes been a "let's make a deal" game between taxpayers and bribable officials.
?
Henares, BIR's deputy commissioner from 2003 to 2005, has been chasing evaders and crooked bureaucrats to clean up collection and the image of the bureau, perceived to be one of the country's most corrupt institutions.
?
She is also trying to make tax-paying synonymous with patriotism. The chief, who amended BIR's vision statement to call it a partner in nation-building, makes sure her staff attend weekly flag-raising ceremonies. She often wears a T-shirt sporting BIR's 2012 slogan: "I love Philippines. I pay taxes."
?
Fear factor
Her approach isn't just touchy-feely.
?
"We are changing ourselves from being primarily a customer service institution to a law enforcement institution," said Henares. "We were collecting taxes at the pace the taxpayer dictates."
?
Now, the bureau ? which collects nearly 70 percent of all government revenue - is taking the initiative, and it wants taxpayers to be afraid of ignoring laws. "If you look at the psyche of the Filipino, if you do not put fear in them they will not obey," Henares said.
?
She does scare people, according to Budget Secretary Florencio Abad. "They fear her, rightfully," he said.
?
Headway is being made in plugging leakages. In January-October, BIR collected P858.6 billion ($21 billion), nearly 14 percent more than a year earlier and 28 percent above the same period of 2010. In 2011, when the economy grew only 3.9 percent, total collections rose 12.3 percent from the previous year.
?
Progress is still needed. In 2011, the Philippines had a tax revenue-to-GDP ratio of 12.3 percent, well below Malaysia's 15.3 percent and Thailand's 16 percent, according to the Asian Development Bank. But last year, the Philippines was ahead of Indonesia's 11.8 percent, which has won investment-grade ratings from two agencies.

Close to investment-grade rating
Aquino aims to get tax revenue to at least 15 percent of GDP by the end of his term in 2016. Helped by Henares's efforts with legislators, he is nearing approval of a "sin" tax bill that should lift cigarette and alcohol tax revenue by P40 billion the first year.
?
Fitch, Standard & Poor's and Moody's Investors Service have all raised their Philippines ratings to one notch below investment grade, thanks to the government's improving finances.
?
"The tax ratio has been improving and that indicates they are getting somewhere to an extent," said Philip McNicholas, Fitch's Hong Kong-based director of Asia Pacific sovereign ratings.
?
"It is clearly a positive for the rating, but that's got to be sustained," he said.
?
To McNicholas, what's needed is a "structural uplift... you've got to change people's perceptions, change people's minds on these things, and get them to participate."
?
Run after tax evaders
After taking the helm, Henares revived a BIR campaign to catch cheats and promised no let-up.
?
She quickly filed her first case, against a pawnshop chain owner who bought a Lamborghini for P26 million during a year in which he and his wife allegedly did not pay tax. The case is pending in a tax-appeal court, with the accused out on bail.
?
The cases that Henares files at the Department of Justice can lead to arrests, but only a court can convict. To date, only five tax cheats have been convicted.
?
While Henares may have to wait years to get her first criminal conviction, she has filed 135 evasion cases so far. They include a P120-million suit against an impeached Supreme Court chief justice and a P5.5-billion claim against a billionaire businessman.
?
"I take pride in all the cases we file, they are fully backed by data and evidence," said Henares.
?
The tax chief said she isn't discouraged by how slow the legal process can be. For alleged cheats, "we can always attach their property, we can foreclose on them, and we can garnish their bank account," Henares said. "Don't push us to that point."
?
Playing hard
The bureau is playing some hard-ball. Recently, it temporarily shut a hardware store in Davao which was accused of under-declaring sales by more than 30 percent.
?
Henares, who is married to a businessman, has an annual salary of only $17,000. Aquino gets paid about $20,000.
?
Abad, who was Aquino's campaign manager, said Henares long has had a reputation for being straight and firm.
?
"She is not very sociable, which actually is good because of the kind of work she does," Abad said. As she is incorruptible, people "don't even attempt to induce her with whatever form of inducement," he added.

In the office, Henares tries to make every minute count. She photocopied a newspaper article on places to get the tastiest roast pig in Metro Manila, not for eating-out tips but because she saw them as potential tax targets.

Consumer confidence hits 4-year high

Consumer confidence rose to a four-and-a-half-year high in November as consumers became more optimistic about the outlook for the economy, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.
The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes rose to 73.7 up from an upwardly revised 73.1 the month before, its highest since February 2008. Economists had expected a reading of 73.0, according to a Reuters poll.
October was originally reported as 72.2.
"Over the past few months, consumers have grown increasingly more upbeat about the current and expected state of the job market, and this turnaround in sentiment is helping to boost confidence," Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.
The expectations index rose to 85.1 from 84.0, while the present situation index edged slightly lower to 56.6 from 56.7.
Consumers' labor market assessment was little changed in November. The "jobs hard to get" index was flat at 38.8 percent, while the "jobs plentiful" rose to 11.2 percent from 10.4 percent.?
Analysts said the latest figures should bode well for the holiday shopping season.
"Despite the 'fiscal cliff,' Hurricane Sandy and a weaker stock market in November, households seem to be upbeat," said Ray Stone, economist and managing director for Stone & McCarthy Research Associates.?"That means they should be willing to spend money on Christmas. Shoppers won't be busting down doors, but sales should be pretty upbeat."?

Sieve holds nanoparticles and acts as solar absorber
ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A membrane consisting of polymer fibres and proteins makes a novel filter for tiny, nano-scaled particles in aqueous solutions. The result of this research, which was done by Professor Mady Elbahri and his team from the Institute of Material Science at Kiel University (KU) and the Institute of Polymer Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), has recently been published as the cover article in the current issue of Advanced Functional Materials.
A nanofluid, which means a colloidal suspension of e.g. metal nanoparticles in water, passes easily through commonly used macroporous polymeric membranes. The particles are too small to be held using hole diameters between three and four micrometers. In addition, the particles would block smaller sieve openings rapidly. Hence, pressure would be necessary to filter out the fluid.
In order to solve these problems, Elbahri and his team biofunctionalized their membrane and added a commercially available protein to the fibres. "We found out that the protein undergoes a conformational change under water, and its ability to capture all the metal nanoparticles during the filtration process is activated," explains Elbahri. "This is a breakthrough," adds Co-author Dr. Shahin Homaeigohar. "The same principle will hopefully enable us, to filter biomolecules and organisms out of waste water."
From Filtration to solar thermal energy
When the nano sieve captures metal particles such as gold, another application is at hand, because, no other method has succeeded in dispersing the particles that well. "This result was unexpected," says Elbahri. "Under dry conditions, the membrane shows the color of the metal, in this case the red of the gold nanoparticles." When the membrane gets wet, it becomes black. "Then, it acts as an omnidirectional perfect black absorber, which can be used as a solar absorber." Elbahri adds: "Indeed we bridge the gaps between several disciplines, chemistry, physics, bioscience and materials science that is, and the Nanochemistry and Nanoengineering group has now initiated the first step toward intradisciplinarity of Nanoscience."

The nano sieve will allow filtering very small particles or biomolecules and organisms such as viruses out of water. How lonely must it be to be Mahmoud Abbas?
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is losing support at home as Hamas' star rises. While he's trying to regain relevance with a UN bid this week, the US and Israel are working against him.
As Israel veered close to a ground invasion of Gaza last week, with Israeli warplanes and artillery pounding Gaza, and Hamas directing rocket fire towards Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time ever, one name was on nobody's lips: Mahmoud Abbas.?

Mr. Abbas may be president of the Palestinian Authority and the head of Fatah, the political party founded by Palestinian Liberation Organization icon Yasser Arafat. But during days of shuttle diplomacy involving Hamas, Israel, the US, Egypt, and other regional powers, Abbas was basically the lonely guy in the corner, hoping someone would eventually ask him to dance.
With the exception of a brief visit from Hillary Clinton, no one ever did. Now in the West Bank today, Abbas's Palestinian Authority is presiding over the exhumation of Mr. Arafat's body (his widow has been insisting of late that his 2004 death was the result of polonium poisoning) while Hamas negotiates with Israel via Egyptian intelligence officials over further easing of the economic blockade of Gaza.
In short, Abbas is rapidly becoming the Israeli-Palestinian conflict's forgotten man. The moribund "peace process" that Abbas has championed for more than 20 years has not led to the creation of a Palestinian state, nor stopped the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank that have steadily chipped away at the size of a theoretical future state. Attacks inside Israel and against settlers have plummeted since the end of the second intifada seven years ago and he's recognized Israel's right to exist, yet restrictions on Palestinian movement within the West Bank remain severe.
Cooperation versus confrontation
Abbas has been highly cooperative with the Israeli military and police in the West Bank. In the eyes of many Palestinians, he has secured Israeli interests at the expense of their own.
The West Bank is more prosperous than hemmed-in Gaza and able to trade with Israel. But Abbas' support, and that of his prime minister Salam Fayyad, has been steadily eroding while Hamas has once more taken up the mantle of the brave "resistance."?
The Islamist Hamas, which took control of Gaza after drubbing Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections (largely due to an electorate fed up with Fatah corruption and abuses of power), now seems a more vital political force than its bitter rival. Senior Hamas leaders have been claiming vindication for their policy of confrontation with Israel over Fatah's commitment to negotiation. ?
In a swipe at Fatah,?Moussa Abu Marzouk, deputy head of Hamas' political bureau, told the Associated Press last week that negotiations with Israel not backed by the threat of arms are doomed to fail. To be sure, what concessions, if any, Israel will actually deliver as part of the ceasefire are uncertain.
Gulf Arab states have been shifting their attentions from Fatah to Hamas in recent years. In October, Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, became the first Arab head of state to visit Gaza since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007 and promised $400 million in aid.
Hamas has largely been backed by Iran in the past decade. After the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the US by Al Qaeda, the US put pressure on Saudi Arabia and other close friends among the Sunni Arab monarchies of the Gulf to cut support from what the US deems a terrorist organization and they mostly complied. Shiite and ethnically Persian Iran, in the middle of its own cold war for influence with the likes of Saudi Arabia, happily stepped into the breach, providing the longer range missiles that today threaten Tel Aviv. Iran's ally Syria, too, became a major backer of the group.
Hamas reaching out to Sunni Arabs
But now Hamas is reaching out once more to the Sunni Arabs with whom it has more natural ties. The Sunni-led uprising against the Assad dictatorship Syria has strained the alliance with Iran. Hamas' exiled leaders who had made Damascus their base for years decamped earlier this year and sided with the uprising, even as Iran continued to staunchly back Assad.
"Iran's position in the Arab world, it's no longer a good position," because of its support for Assad in Syria, Abu Marzouk told reporters yesterday. "Iran asked Hamas to adopt a closer position to Syria. Hamas refused, and this has affected our relationship with Iran."
He might as well have said to the Saudis: "We're waiting by the phone." Will Saudi Arabia grasp an opportunity to permanently wean Hamas off Iran? They may, and if so Abbas will find himself with one fewer friend.
What can he do to swing some political momentum back in his direction? The odds of even a partial Israeli settlement freeze any time soon are zero, with that country's elections coming up and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeing no percentage in making concessions to the PA anyways. So that leaves unilateral action ??precisely the course Abbas is now pursuing.
Bid at United Nations
He's vowed to seek a vote at the UN General Assembly on Thursday on granting Palestine "observer state" status at the UN, an upgrade from its current "observer entity" status. While this sounds like semantics, the upgrade would give Palestine more standing in front of UN bodies ??for instance the ability to make complaints to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. The move has infuriated the US and Israel and they've been lobbying furiously to have Abbas pull back, even though it's one of the few steps he can take to bolster his own secular, more Israel-friendly movement Fatah over Hamas.
Israel has been threatening to cut off the flow of tax receipts to Abbas' and Fayyad's government in response. And the US isn't mincing words.
"We?ve obviously been very clear that we do not think that this step is going to bring the Palestinian people any closer to a state, that we think it is a mistake, that we oppose it, that we will oppose it," State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said yesterday. "Secretary [of State Hillary Clinton] was very clear with President Abbas when she was in Ramallah last week that our position on this has not changed, and we are continuing to make that clear, not only directly to President Abbas and the Palestinians, but also to all of our UN partners as well."
Ms. Nuland went on to say: "We think it?s going to be complicating and potentially a step backwards in terms of the larger goal, which is a negotiated solution."
If Abbas does back down, it will once again appear as if he's acting entirely at the behest of the US. Not something to improve his standing in the current climate.
After UN vote, then what?
Could the UN deliver the big win Abbas desperately needs? Perhaps. France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told his country's parliament today Paris will vote "yes" for Palestine at the UN, and recognition of a state along 1967 borders at the UN would be a symbolic victory. Raucous, happy crowds in Ramallah after a successful vote? No doubt.?
But what then? The Obama administration has threatened to cut Abbas off financially in retaliation for pursuing observer status at the UN. Congress is on board too. When Abbas flirted with a UN bid last year, Congress suspended $200 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority. Israel too, has threatened financial sanctions, and some senior officials have gone further. Right-wing Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman prepared a document calling for the "dismantling" of the Palestinian Authority in retaliation for a successful UN upgrade.
Cutting off money would be devastating in an economy where most employment is driven by the PA. That could leave Abbas with a symbolic victory, but real financial and political pain and more people viewing the Hamas approach to Israel as the right one.
That outcome would presumably horrify the US and Israel, but sometimes it appears that the efforts of years have guided outcomes in precisely the direction they had hoped to avoid. When Hamas first started to emerge in Israeli-occupied Gaza in the 1980s, Israel viewed the religious movement as a useful foil to Fatah, a group that could divide Palestinian loyalties and weaken their major enemy.
Twenty years later, Hamas is the major enemy. Fatah, and Abbas, are staring at obsolescence.

Judge orders tobacco companies to admit deception publicly
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major tobacco companies must take out advertisements saying they deliberately deceived the U.S. public about the danger and addictiveness of cigarettes, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
The ruling in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia aims to finalize the wording of the advertisements that the judge first ordered in 2006 after finding the companies violated federal racketeering law.
Tobacco companies fought a public admission of deception, calling it a violation of their free speech rights.
U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler rejected the companies' position, finding that the final wording - which the companies and the U.S. Justice Department have fought over for years - is factual and not controversial.
There are five different statements that the companies will be required to advertise.
One of them begins: "A federal court has ruled that the defendant tobacco companies deliberately deceived the American public by falsely selling and advertising low tar and light cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes."
The advertisements will be placed in media that are still to be determined, and they will be different from the warning labels that already are on tobacco products.
"The government regularly requires wrongdoers to make similar disclosures in a number of different contexts," Kessler wrote, calling the language "basic, uncomplicated".
A spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, which had urged the strong language, had no immediate comment.
Two of the largest companies, Altria Group Inc and Reynolds American Inc, did not immediately return messages requesting comment. The companies could continue to fight the language with another appeal in a case that began in 1999 with the government's racketeering charges.

Disney?s new robot plays catch with your kids

For better ? or worse ? the research lab side of Disney is building a robot that plays a decent game of catch, meaning parents can keep their eyes on Facebook while their kids get a bit of exercise.
The robot has a human-like appearance and uses a Microsoft Kinect to track the balls. After a few practice tosses, almost anyone can successfully play catch with it.
The humanoid is intended to give theme-park visitors a means to interact with robots without actually touching them and accidently causing thousands of dollars? worth of damage, according to the Disney Research video below explaining the project.?
The robot is programmed to turn its head, giving the impression it is maintaining body presence with its playmate and tracking the ball with its eyes. When it misses a bad toss, the robot moves its head as if looking for the lost ball or bowing in embarrassment. Other times, it just shrugs its shoulders.
Importantly, there are no temper tantrums or rants about lost scholarship opportunities. Instead, the robot keeps playing, entertaining the old fashioned way, with a twist of the future thrown in for good measure.

Grover Norquist on tax pledge: ?No one is caving?
Some Republicans are showing a willingness to raise taxes, but conservative activist Grover Norquist, who has convinced Republican candidates and policymakers to sign a pledge never to increase rates, thinks it's all a bluff.
"No one is caving," Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Sunday. "For 20 years Democrats have tried over and over to trick Republicans into breaking the pledge. It hasn't happened. This isn't my first rodeo."
Republicans are facing pressure from Democrats to reach a deal that includes increasing tax rates to avoid a slew of other tax increases and spending cuts set to begin in 2013. And some are willing to do it.
"I will violate the pledge," said South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham Sunday during an appearance on ABC's "This Week." In return, he added, Democrats must agree to overhauling federal programs like Social Security and Medicare.
Norquist said the campaign to pressure Republicans into increasing tax rates is a trap that will ultimately make it difficult for Republicans to be re-elected. In the Wall Street Journal interview, he pointed to former Republican President George H.W. Bush, who was defeated after he violated a promise not to raise taxes. "Republicans who raise taxes have a hard time explaining to anybody other than a congenital Republican why you should elect them," he said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Add seven swans, six geese and five golden rings to the list of Christmas gifts that cost more than they did a year ago.
And if you get all 364 items repeated throughout "The Twelve Days of Christmas" carol, you'll pay 6.1 percent more this year, according to the so-called Christmas Price Index that PNC Wealth Management updates annually.
That comes to $107,300.
"The rise is larger than expected considering the modest economic growth we've had," said Jim Dunigan, managing executive of investments for PNC. He noted the government's Consumer Price Index has risen just 2 percent in the 12 months before September.

I must change the windows of my home. My old windows aren't bad looking. But although they go well with the house and I still like them, they are lacking the much needed energy efficiency. San Antonio Man Allegedly Pulls Gun On Line-Cutting Black Friday Shopper
Tensions ran high for shoppers who abandoned their turkey dinners Thursday night to line up for Black Friday deals.
The evening was particularly intense for one shopper who allegedly pulled a gun on a man who punched him in the face while in line at a Sears store at the South Park Mall in San Antonio, TX, police told San Antonio Express-News.
Sgt. Rob Carey said that a man was trying to cut his way to the front of the line, which didn't sit well with his fellow shoppers, according to San Antonio Express-News. Arguments escalated to name calling before the alleged line-cutter punched another shopper in the face.
Witnesses told San Antonio News that the man who was punched then pulled out a gun and a pointed it at the line-cutter, but police say the man actually pointed the gun at the ground. The crowd of waiting shoppers scattered when he pulled the gun, and the man who was trying to cut the line ran and hid behind a refrigerator before he ran out of the store, according to witnesses.
The man who pulled the gun was not charged because he had a concealed handgun license. Shopping resumed shortly after the incident, police told San Antonio Express-News.
As reports of Black Friday madness continue to pour in, it seems that Sears shoppers at South Park Mall just had a bit of scare compared to other violent incidents around the country.
A "gang fight" reportedly broke out at Woodland Shopping Mall in Michigan early Friday morning and two teens were taken into custody, according to Fox News. Meanwhile, in Covington, WA, a couple was hit and seriously injured in the parking lot of Walmart by 71-year-old driver who is under investigation for drunk driving.

Many mobile-phone applications (apps) use spatial positioning technology to present their user with location-specific information such as directions to nearby amenities. By simultaneously predicting the location of the mobile-user and the data access points, or hotspots, improved accuracy of positioning is now available, thanks to an international research team including Sinno Jialin Pan from the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research1. Software developers expect that such improvements will enable a whole new class of apps that can react to small changes in position.
Traditionally, device position was determined by the Global Positioning System (GPS) that uses satellites to triangulate approximate location, but its accuracy falters when the mobile device is indoors. An alternative approach is to use the 'received signal strength' (RSS) from local transmitters. Attenuation of radio waves by walls can limit accuracy; and, it is difficult to predict signals in complex, obstacle-filled environments.
Software developers have tried to circumvent these problems by using so-called 'learning-based techniques' that identify correlations between RSS values and access-point placement. Such systems do not necessarily require prior knowledge of the hotspot locations; rather they 'learn' from data collected on a mobile device. This also has drawbacks: the amount of data can be large, making calibration time consuming. Changes in the environment can also outdate the calibration.
Pan and his co-workers reduced this calibration effort in an experimental demonstration of a protocol that calculates both the positions of the device and the access points simultaneously -- a process they call colocalization. "Integrating the two location-estimation tasks into a unified mathematical model means that we can fully exploit the correlations between mobile-device and hotspot position," explains Pan.
First, the researchers trained a learning-based system with the signal-strength values received from access points at selected places in the area of interest. They used this information to calibrate a probabilistic 'location-estimation' system. Then, they approximated the location from the learned model using signal strength samples received in real-time from the access points.
Experimental trials showed that this approach not only required less calibration, but it was more accurate than other state-of-the-art systems. "We next want to apply the method to a larger-scale environment," says Pan. "We also want to find ways to make use of the estimated locations to provide more useful information, such as location-based advertising." As this technique could help robots navigate by themselves, it may also have important implications for the burgeoning field of robotics.
