It?s that time of the year again, when GameStop starts to shed the weight of older gaming systems in anticipation of hot new next-generation consoles. Have you updated your PlayStation 2 library recently?
According to The Verge, the video game retailer is discontinuing the PS2 library of systems and games from thousands of their stories to make room for the Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 720.?Space in most GameStops has gotten pretty tight lately, as the company has expanded their wares to digital sales, smartphones, and tablets like the iPad and Google Nexus 7.
GameStop senior vice president of store operations Mike Dzura noted that the PlayStation 2 is ?unique? and would be far from extinct due to unusual demand for the console in certain areas:
?The PS2 is a unique one ? we still generate a whole lot of profit off PS2 sales, but we?re going to keep PS2 where PS2 does sell, and we won?t put it in stores where we see really lapsed sales. It?s somewhat demographic ? it?s somewhat regional, it is. The heartland of the U.S. tends to catch the wave a little bit later than the coasts to a degree. So we kinda bring it in, and we?ll take it out of the stores where the shelves would be better served by next generation product, or they?re just small stores where they can?t fit it in.?
GameStop CEO Paul Raines and executive marketing vice president Mike Hogan were also interviewed about the next round of consoles, and what they know about in terms of pricing and release dates.
Of course, they didn?t still any hard details, but Hogan didn?t rule out the possibility of a price drop for current systems once the next-generation consoles were released. Factor in the expected low price point of the Wii U and the reluctance of consumers to buy expensive gaming systems as opposed to consoles, and price cuts seem reasonable.
Whatever the case, the reality is that it?s not just the new gaming consoles pushing stalwart systems like PS2 into retirement. If you need to update your collection with any particular games you love, you?d better get started pretty soon.
