RE-EXAMINING THE 'FORGOTTEN WAR'

WASHINGTON -- The Korean War has never exactly been the war that young men came back from whispering, "It was the greatest moment of my life." It was not the war that journalists wrote books about the second- or third-"greatest generation."

It was a war spanning those ambiguous years, 1950 to 1953, sandwiched between the "Big War" of the 1940s and the confusing wars in the years afterward, from Vietnam to Iraq, that no one would accuse of being the "good wars."

And yet, this weekend the armistice that ended the war in 1953 is being celebrated here. The Korean War Memorial is a thrilling commemoration. More and more, analysts and journalists are writing to remember the "forgotten war," where so many died facing the "Red Chinese" for the first time, and history is recording the daring tactics that were used there.

To talk about all of this, I went to one of the few remaining survivors of that war, former ambassador and strategic arms adviser Gen. Edward L. Rowny, now 96 years old. At the time of the Korean War, he was Gen. Douglas MacArthur's spokesman and one of the planners of both the amazing Inchon landing and the dropping of a fully employable bridge to help our troops escape the awful fighting at the Chosin Reservoir.

A mere five years after the end of the wars in Europe and the Pacific, then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson mistakenly left out the Korean peninsula from an important strategy statement on those parts of the world the United States would defend. It did not take long for the Russians to respond, sending the North Korean troops they controlled to attack the South.

In Tokyo, where MacArthur was still, with enormous success, supplanting the emperor in Japanese minds, troops were already preparing to go home; now, instead, they would move swiftly to Korea. But where to land?

To suggestions from his staff, the mince-no-words MacArthur declared, "You're all pusillanimous. Why not terrain-hop and land in Inchon? Have you considered that?"General Rowny responded that, realistically, Inchon, a small port town on the west coast of the Korean peninsula, "has a 32-foot tide, the greatest tidal range in the world. It would be difficult for a landing force to fight without reinforcements until they could arrive on the next tide." But the fact that the Pentagon itself was for evacuating American troops from Japan did not stop MacArthur, who advised that day, "Go for the throat. The tides are simply another obstacle to be overcome."

Despite the obstacles, in mid-September the first ships rode the waves of high tide onto Inchon's beaches and city walls, for which special aluminum ladders were built. Twelve hours later, the second wave of Americans arrived.

MacArthur afterward gave Rowny a bear hug and told him, "Rowny, Inchon will go down in history as the 22nd greatest battle of the world."

For the Inchon landing involved a heroic and nearly superhuman effort on the part of the American strategists, a major one being Rowny, then a tall, handsome man of Polish descent who could do everything from speak flawless Russian to outflank the Chinese. All of these details are available on Amazon in short book form, "An American Soldier's Saga of the Korean War," which will soon be out in full book form as "Smokey Joe and the General, The Tale of Gen. John E. Wood and His Protege, Lt. Ed Rowny."

But more was to come. Months later, when American troops had taken Seoul and then crossed the 38th parallel and moved toward the North Korean/Chinese border at the Yalu River, MacArthur's daring proved rather too daring.

As Chinese troops poured over the border and it became impossible for the Americans to retreat, Rowny and the other planners designed a bridge to span the Koto-Ri chasm, which ranged from 30 to 100 feet wide. They decided to use a C-119 cargo plane to airdrop parts of a treadway bridge, which would then be rebolted together on the ground.

"It was an ambitious idea whose biggest obstacle was finding an Air Force pilot brave enough to airdrop the sections, since most argued that it couldn't be done," Gen. Rowny told me. "The airplane's weight would shift too dramatically when parts were unloaded."

But this, too, was accomplished by daring American pilots, and thousands of Americans were thus evacuated.

Today, South Korea is one of the top 15 economies in the world. It is the very example of an Asian democracy, with education for all, amazing prosperity and even an elected female president. This is an outcome not seen in any other "small war" that we engaged in afterward.

Many can and will always argue that this was a war that did not have to be fought and should not have been; but the outcome, nevertheless, was proof that the United States can both devise inventive and successful war tactics and build a nation afterward. In all of this, the Korean War was unique.

Dempsey: 'Grey's Anatomy' isn't my passion

Patrick Dempsey talked to reporters about "Racing LeMans" at the TV Critics summer press tour on Thursday in Beverly Hills.

Sounds like playing McDreamy can turn into a little bit of a nightmare after a decade.

"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey, who is the subject of the new Velocity documentary "Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans," says in the film that he wants to be a full-time race-car driver. That's not exactly good news for fans of ABC's medical drama, which the actor has been a part of since it debuted 2005.

Dempsey may not be leaving the hit show just yet, but while promoting the documentary Thursday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills, he told TODAY.com that he doesn't quite have the enthusiasm for his work on "Grey's" that he once had.

?Work on a TV show doesn?t change,? Dempsey said. ?In a race, it changes constantly, every lap, every corner, every moment of that day. And that?s very exciting. And it keeps me alive. And then I can go back to work and enjoy it."

He also said that there?s a ?purity to (racing) that?s missing from the work I do as an actor.?

"I'm not necessarily bored with the show. I'm incredibly grateful to have a show that's been on for 10 years,? he said. "When you're on the show, coming up on 200 episodes, it's about surviving. There's not a lot of homework that goes into it. You learn your lines and try to stay present and try not to get caught acting. I'm glad I have the gig, but it's not the same as being in a race car."

Dempsey's character, brilliant neurosurgeon Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, has certainly done his share of surviving over the seasons. From a living through a plane crash to getting shot in the chest and more, Shepherd has been soldiering on, giving Dempsey plenty of lines to memorize.

But don?t get the actor wrong ? he wasn't dissing the show. Dempsey said that "Grey's" has been great for his career and allows him to do what he?s passionate about: race.

?I?m glad to have the gig, but it?s not the same as being in a race car. It?s just not.?

Eric Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan until the character was killed off in 2012, said he has great respect for his former co-star as an actor, and said Dempsey is dedicated to his craft.

?Look, he has a strong passion for racing as illustrated by the amount of time he spends behind the wheel,? Dane told TODAY.com. ?But I don?t buy for a second that acting is something he does on the side to support his racing. He?s too good of an actor not to be passionate about it."

"Racing LeMans" is a four-part miniseries that follows Dempsey's attempt at completing LeMans, a 24-hour endurance race in France, as he juggles family and work responsibilities.

Watch the actor do what he's passionate about when "Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans" premieres Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. on Velocity, a Discovery channel.

Verizon Wants to Let You Upgrade Your Phone More Often Too

Droid Life got their hands on internal Verizon slides that reveal that Verizon has plans to let its customers upgrade their phones more often. Yeah, kind of like T-Mobile's Jump plan. The 'VZ Edge' plan will supposedly let Big Red customers upgrade to a new phone once they have paid off 50% of their phone. Upgrade before your upgrade. Pay to keep paying.

Italy's Eni lowers targets at Iraq oil field

The Italian oil company Eni says it has agreed to lower production targets at a major oil field in Iraq's south while extending the length of the contract by five years.

Foreign oil companies have helped turn around Iraq's dilapidated oil industry in recent years, but export bottlenecks have forced Iraqi officials to rethink the pace of oil field development.

Eni says the deal signed Monday in Baghdad sets a new target at the Zubair field of 850,000 barrels of oil per day through 2035.

The 20-year deal it signed with Iraq in 2010 originally called for 1.2 million barrels of daily production.

Eni is the main contractor developing the 4.1 billion barrel Zubair field as part of a consortium that includes Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum and South Korea's KOGAS.

After Elbow Surgery, Baseball Players Enjoy Successful Long-term Results

This is according to research presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's (AOSSM) Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.

"Previous studies showed successful return to play after UCL surgery, but we were also able to evaluate each athlete's career longevity and reason for retirement," commented lead author, Daryl C. Osbahr, MD of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. "These players typically returned to play within a year of surgery and averaged an additional 3.6 years of playing time, a significant amount considering the extensive nature of this surgery in a highly competitive group of athletes. They also typically did not retire from baseball secondary to continued elbow problems."

The study examined 256 patients, including high school, college and professional baseball players, and were contacted an average of 12.6 years after their UCL reconstruction. Approximately 83 percent of these athletes were able to return to the same or higher level of competition, with only 3 percent reporting persistent elbow pain and only 5 percent noting limitation of elbow function during day-to-day activities.

"UCL injuries used to be considered career-ending," Osbahr noted. "Now players are consistently able to return to play at a high level while also enjoying excellent long-term outcomes."

While approximately 243 (95%) of the athletes studied had retired by the minimum 10-year follow-up, 238 (98%) still participated in throwing at a recreational level with most reporting no elbow pain.

The research earned AOSSM's O'Donoghue Sports Injury Research award, given annually to the best overall paper that deals with clinical-based or human in-vivo research.

Party leaders spar over Senate rule changes ... - KWQC-TV6 Home

By PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Proposed changes to Senate rules would either ease the way for President Barack Obama to assemble his second-term team or permanently threaten the body's deliberative style, the chamber's top Democratic and Republican lawmaker said Sunday.

Democratic Leader Harry Reid and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell once again strongly disagreed during separate television segments on the eve of a rare closed-door summit that could reduce the Senate's reputation as deliberative to the point of inaction. Reid and McConnell - along with their rank-and-file members - have been trading barbs over just what the proposed changes would be, both for Obama's current slate of nominees who are awaiting confirmation and for future senators who prize their ability to delay action.

Democrats, who are the majority in the Senate, are pushing to erode the rights of minority Republicans to block confirmation of Obama's picks for posts on a labor rights board and a consumer protection bureau. Republicans previously stalled confirmation votes for Obama's pick for labor secretary and chiefs of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Export-Import Bank, but last week GOP lawmakers stepped aside and said they would allow those nominees to move forward.

Reid said the changes were not about the appointment of judges or passing legislation. "This is allowing the people of America to have a president who can have his team," he said.

McConnell called Democrats' proposed changes contrary to Senate tradition, which typically requires 60 votes to end debate and move forward on nominations or legislation.

"I hope that we'll come to our senses and not change the core of the Senate. We've never changed the rules of the Senate by breaking the rules of the Senate," McConnell said.

All 100 senators - but not reporters or the public - have been invited to a meeting Monday evening to seek a compromise that a handful of lawmakers are now exploring.

"We need to start talking to each other instead of at each other," McConnell said.

It's not clear a conversation would produce any agreement.

Reid calls the changes minor and narrow. McConnell calls them unprecedented and overbroad.

Reid says the proposal applies only to those tapped to serve in the administration, not for lifetime posts as judges. McConnell says it would fundamentally deny senators their prerogative to query potential officials.

Reid said the nominees would protect consumers, workers and the environment. McConnell and his GOP allies say the picks are payback to Obama's political base.

"They're driven by the unions," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

Countered Reid: "They have nothing against the qualifications. They don't like the jobs these people have."

In particular, Republicans have objected to a pair of union-backed members, Richard Griffin and Sharon Block, on the National Labor Relations Board, who were appointed by Obama when he said the Senate was in recess. An appeals court has ruled that Obama exceeded his authority, and the board's actions since they took their seats are in legal limbo.

Republicans also have objected to Obama's pick to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created as part of Wall Street overhaul legislation, which the GOP opposed. Obama nominated his pick, former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, more than two years ago.

"I think a president should have the right to put their team out there," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

"Why we can't just do 51 votes is beyond me," she added.

Reid and McConnell spoke during separate interviews with NBC's "Meet the Press." Hatch and Klobuchar were on ABC's "This Week."

Courts will treat Asiana passengers differently

(AP) ? When the courts have to figure compensation for people aboard Flight 214, the potential payouts will probably be vastly different for Americans and passengers from other countries, even if they were seated side by side as the Asiana jetliner crash-landed.

An international treaty governs compensation to passengers harmed by international air travel ? from damaged luggage to crippling injuries and death. The pact is likely to close U.S. courts to many foreigners and force them to pursue their claims in Asia and elsewhere, where lawsuits are rarer, harder to win and offer smaller payouts.

Some passengers have already contacted lawyers.

"If you are a U.S. citizen, there will be no problem getting into U.S. courts. The other people are going to have a fight on their hands," said Northern California attorney Frank Pitre, who represents two Americans who were aboard the plane.

Federal law bars lawyers from soliciting victims of air disasters for the first 45 days after the crash. Pitre said his clients called him.

Congress enacted that law in 1996 amid public anger over lawyers who solicited clients in the days immediately following the Valujet Flight 592 crash in the Florida Everglades and the crash of TWA Flight 800 off the New York coast.

National Transportation Safety Board attorney Benjamin Allen reminded attorneys of the rules in a mass email sent Thursday.

"We are closely monitoring the activities of attorneys following this accident, and will immediately notify state bar ethics officials and other appropriate authorities if impermissible activity is suspected," the message said.

The flight that broke apart Saturday at the San Francisco airport was carrying 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France when it approached the runway too low and too slow. The Boeing 777 hit a seawall before skittering across the tarmac and catching fire.

Three girls from China were killed and 182 people injured, most not seriously. The parents of the first two girls who died, 16-year-olds Ye Ming Yuan and Wang Lin Jia, appeared a vigil Saturday near San Francisco International Airport. Through a translator, the grieving parents thanked the more than 100 attendees for their support, according to KGO-TV.

The dozens who were seriously injured ? especially the few who were paralyzed ? can expect to win multimillion dollar legal settlements, as long as their claims are filed in U.S. courts, legal experts said.

Northern California attorney Mike Danko, who is consulting with several lawyers from Asia about the disaster, said any passenger who was left a quadriplegic can expect settlements close to $10 million if the case is filed in the United States. Deaths of children, meanwhile, may fetch in the neighborhood of $5 million to $10 million depending on the circumstances in U.S. courts.

In other countries, he explained, the same claims could be worth far less.

In 2001, a South Korean court ordered Korean Air Lines to pay a total of $510,000 to a woman whose daughter, son-in-law and three grandsons were killed in a 1997 crash in the U.S. territory of Guam that killed 228 people.

Broken bones in plane accidents usually mean $1 million settlements in the Unites States and in the low five-figure range overseas, Danko said.

In 2011, the Federal Aviation Administration put the value of a human life at $6 million when it was contemplating the cost-benefit of a new "cockpit resource management" regulation. But again, Danko said, that estimate applies only in U.S. courts. Foreign courts can be expected to pay far smaller settlements.

In all, the South Korean government agency that regulates that country's insurance industry expects Asiana's insurers to pay out about $175.5 million total ? $131 million to replace the plane and another $44.5 million to passengers and the city of San Francisco for damage to the airport. Suh Chang-suk, an official at Financial Supervisory Service, declined to discuss how the watchdog agency calculated its estimate.

The international treaty is commonly referred to as the Montreal Convention because of the Canadian city where it was drafted. It offers international passengers five options for where to seek compensation: where they live, their final destination, where the ticket was issued, where the air carrier is based and the air carrier's principal place of business.

Foreign passengers who had roundtrip tickets to final destinations beyond the U.S. face stiff legal challenges to pursue their claims against the airline in the United States, where courts are more receptive to lawsuits and the payouts larger than in the courts of most other nations.

Asiana can also invoke the America legal doctrine of "forum non conveniens" to argue that it's much more convenient for it to litigate the Asian victims' cases in Asia because all parties are based there.

South Korean attorney Suh Dong Hee represented some the victims of the 1997 Korean Air Lines crash in the. He said family members of the victims who pursued their case in the United States settled for as much as 100 times more than those who sued in South Korea.

Brian Havel, director of DePaul University's International Aviation Law Institute, said the convention does require the airlines to make immediate "down payments" to victims to help with medical expenses, travel costs and other inconveniences caused by the crash.

"Everyone will get something," Havel said. "But who receives what does largely depend on where they qualify under the convention."

However, Pitre and others say, the foreign passengers are still able to sue others who may have contributed to the accident, such as the plane's manufacturer, airport personnel and even, perhaps, the first responders.

Pitre said he and his clients are investigating whether Boeing Co. shoulders any responsibility for the crash, including potential design flaws in the plane's automated instruments or differences between first-class passengers' seatbelts, which come with a shoulder strap, and the seatbelts in the economy section, which are lap restraints only.

Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said the company buys seats from other companies and "simply installs them." He also said the seat belt designs and configurations are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Birtel declined to discuss the other issues Pitre raised.

Authorities said Friday that one of the Chinese teenagers who died was struck by a fire truck, although it's not clear whether that killed her. Some passengers who called 911 immediately after the crash also complained that the emergency response took too long. Those third parties and others are open to lawsuits in the United States.

San Francisco officials said ambulances could not immediately come too close to the plane out of concern the aircraft would explode.

Pangos, Canada beat Team USA in World University Games

by GU Athletics

KREM.com

KAZAN, Russia ? Gonzaga University junior Kevin Pangos scored 9 points and Canada?s Development Men?s National Team defeated the United States 94-85 Friday to win Group C at the 2013 FISU Universiade and enter medal round play at 5-0.

The loss dropped the Americans out of medal competition at 3-2. The best the U.S. can finish is ninth.

Canada will face either Brazil (3-1), Norway (2-2) or Finland (3-2) as the runner-up in Group D in Sunday?s quarterfinal of what is also known as the World University Games. Brazil and Norway play later Friday, a Brazil victory sending them to the quarterfinals. A Norway victory creates a three-way tie for second and would involve tiebreakers to determine Canada?s opponent. Lithuania won Pool D with a 5-0 mark.

Pangos, averaging 9.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg and 2.6 assists/game through the completion of pool play, went 4-for-9 from the field Friday, including 1-2 from 3-point range. He also grabbed two rebounds and had a pair of assists in 21 minutes.?????????

Team USA opened the match on a 14-4 run, powered by the hot hand of Luke Hancock, but Team Canada quickly countered. Back-to-back three-pointers from Philip Scrubb and Brady Heslip ? who each notched an assist on the other?s shot ? began a 14-3 stretch as Canada built an 18-17 advantage after the game?s first 10 minutes. Canada?s offence shone through with a 28-point second quarter; the team?s defense held firm and limited the Americans to 19 in the frame.

The teams traded chances in the third quarter. Team USA came out of the break shooting the ball well, but Waterloo, Ont. native Murphy Burnatowski answered with five straight points. A frantic quarter saw both sides pushing hard, but Canada established its largest lead of the game at 16 points after Dwight Powell found a streaking Melvin Ejim for an emphatic slam dunk. After 30 minutes of play, Canada held an 11-point lead over the American side.

The back-and-forth action continued in the final period with the Red and White looking to close-out the contest and Team USA attempting to shoot its way back into the game. Heslip and Powell combined for 15 points as a determined Canadian side held off the American?s advance. Hancock contributed 14 of his game-high 27 points in the frame, but his lone effort was not enough to counter the Canadians? balanced offence.

Canada?s team of student-athletes was led by another impressive shooting performance from Burlington, Ontario?s Heslip, who finished with 20 points in the match, including four baskets from beyond-the-arc. Heslip has now recorded 18 three-pointers in Team Canada?s five games. Calgary, Alta. native Jordan Bachynski added 13 points in the contest. Powell, a product of Toronto, Ont., added 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Canadians? relentless attack from in-close produced 52 points in the paint while Team USA was held to 22 around the basket.

(AP) ? The jury in George Zimmerman's murder trial began a second day of deliberations Saturday morning, weighing whether the neighborhood watch volunteer committed a crime almost a year and a half ago when he fatally shot Trayvon Martin.

Jurors reconvened in the courtroom at 9 a.m. Saturday. A few smiled as the judge addressed them before they left the courtroom to continue their discussions.

The jury began deliberations Friday afternoon as police and civic leaders in this Orlando suburb went on national television to plead for calm in Sanford and across the country, no matter what the verdict.

"There is no party in this case who wants to see any violence," Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said. "We have an expectation upon this announcement that our community will continue to act peacefully."

During closing arguments, the jury heard dueling portraits of the neighborhood watch captain: a cop wannabe who took the law into his own hands or a well-meaning volunteer who shot Martin because he feared for his life.

Zimmerman's lawyers put a concrete slab and two life-size cardboard cutouts in front of the jury box in one last attempt to convince the panel Zimmerman shot the unarmed black 17-year-old in self-defense while his head was being slammed against the pavement.

Attorney Mark O'Mara used the slab to make the point that it could serve as a weapon. He showed the cutouts of Zimmerman and Martin to demonstrate that the teenager was considerably taller. And he displayed a computer-animated depiction of the fight based on Zimmerman's account.

He said prosecutors hadn't met their burden of proving Zimmerman's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Instead, he said, the case was built on "could've beens" and "maybes."

"If it hasn't been proven, it's just not there," O'Mara said. "You can't fill in the gaps. You can't connect the dots. You're not allowed to."

In a rebuttal, prosecutor John Guy accused Zimmerman of telling "so many lies." He said Martin's last emotion was fear as Zimmerman followed him through the gated townhouse community on the rainy night of Feb. 26, 2012.

"Isn't that every child's worst nightmare, to be followed on the way home in the dark by a stranger?" Guy said. "Isn't that every child's worst fear?"

One juror, a young woman, appeared to wipe away a tear as Guy said nothing would ever bring back Martin.

The sequestered jury of six women ? all but one of them white ? will have to sort through a lot of conflicting testimony from police, neighbors, friends and family members.

Jurors deliberated for three and a half hours when they decided to stop Friday evening. About two hours into their discussions, they asked for a list of the evidence. They will resume deliberations Saturday morning.

Witnesses gave differing accounts of who was on top during the struggle, and Martin's parents and Zimmerman's parents both claimed that the voice heard screaming for help in the background of a 911 call was their son's.

Zimmerman, 29, is charged with second-degree murder, but the jury will also be allowed to consider manslaughter. Under Florida's laws involving gun crimes, manslaughter could end up carrying a penalty as heavy as the one for second-degree murder: life in prison.

The judge's decision to allow the jury to consider manslaughter was a potentially heavy blow to the defense: It could give jurors who aren't convinced the shooting amounted to murder a way to hold Zimmerman responsible for the killing.

To win a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors must show only that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

O'Mara dismissed the prosecution's contention that Zimmerman was a "crazy guy" patrolling his townhouse complex and "looking for people to harass" when he saw Martin. O'Mara also disputed prosecutors' claim that Zimmerman snapped when he saw Martin because there had been a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood, mostly by young black men.

The defense attorney said Zimmerman at no point showed ill will, hatred or spite during his confrontation with Martin ? which is what prosecutors must prove for second-degree murder.

"That presumption isn't based on any fact whatsoever," O'Mara said.

In contrast, prosecutors argued Zimmerman showed ill will when he whispered profanities to a police dispatcher over his cellphone while following Martin through the neighborhood. They said Zimmerman "profiled" the teenager as a criminal.

Guy said Zimmerman violated the cornerstone of neighborhood watch volunteer programs, which is to observe and report, not follow a suspect.

Zimmerman's account of how he grabbed his gun from his holster at his waist as Martin straddled him is physically impossible, Guy said.

"The defendant didn't shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to; he shot him because he wanted to," Guy said. "That's the bottom line."

But to invoke self-defense, Zimmerman only had to believe he was facing great bodily harm, his attorney said. He asked jurors not to let their sympathies for Martin's parents interfere with their decision.

"It is a tragedy, truly," O'Mara said. "But you can't allow sympathy."

With the verdict drawing near, police and city leaders in Sanford and other parts of Florida said they have taken precautions for the possibility of mass protests or even civil unrest if Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, is acquitted.

There were big protests in Sanford and other cities across the country last year when authorities waited 44 days before arresting Zimmerman.

About a dozen protesters, most of them from outside central Florida, gathered outside the courthouse as the jury deliberated. Martin supporters outnumbered those for Zimmerman.

Tips, tricks, and cheats to help you collect donuts, cash, and XP faster in The Simpsons: Tapped Out

Tips, tricks, and cheats to help you collect donuts, cash, and XP faster in The Simpsons: Tapped Out

If you're a Simpsons fan and an iPhone or iPad owner, odds are you've stumbled across The Simpsons: Tapped Out already. Homer is up to his usual antics and this time he has completely blown up Springfield. You must work to rebuild it by completing tasks for cash and donuts. You'll enlist the help of Lisa and other fellow Springfielders to do so.

Like any RPG, The Simpsons: Tapped Out can require some strategy in order to progress through levels and collect cash and donuts quicker. Here are some tips, tricks, cheats, and time savers we've found to help you progress through the game quicker and more efficiently.

Hidden items and bonuses

This is a rather easy one and doesn't require any skill. Tap on Homer so his task list comes up next to him. Now tap on Homer 10 times quickly. Doing this will unlock 10 donuts and a Jebediah Statue.

Choosing tasks

When choosing tasks for your characters to perform, it's good to be mindful of how long they take and what the reward is. Typically longer tasks come with a higher dollar and/or donut amount attached to them. It's good to choose these tasks before you're about to put the game down in order to let your characters achieve these while you're away.

If you're actively playing the game and building things out, it's good to assign your characters to perform shorter tasks. The monetary amount may not be as much but you'll get to interact with your character a lot more. Those little tasks can sometimes add up to decent amounts of cash or donuts rather fast too.

Collect money and XP in less taps

If you're tired of seeing all the XP and dollar signs floating around the screen but don't want to tap on each individual one, there's an easier way to collect all of it. Simply tap on one stack to expand it and then close or open your task book. After about five to ten seconds you'll see all your XP and money whisk into your account without the need for you to tap on any more of it.

Choose your buildings carefully

When it comes to adding on to Springfield, it's good to choose what you'd like to build carefully. Each property has the potential to earn you money and XP but how much?

Commercial spaces such as the Kwik-E-Mart and others have the ability to earn you higher income but it comes at the cost of time. While you can trigger more tasks at once, they'll most likely take longer. These are good ones to have as a steady stream of income. I typically trigger tasks when I can and definitely always have tasks running while I'm away from the game. That way I come back to a nice pile of cash the next time I play.

Residential properties will earn you income tax on a pretty regular basis but it isn't a ton of cash. You can supplement this by checking on the houses and making sure there aren't any other tasks you can perform. For example, at the Flanders you can send Lisa to babysit. These kinds of residential tasks take longer but earn more cash.

Level up faster

Items such as trees will earn you XP, which you'll need in order to level up and unlock other items. While these items don't earn you cash or donuts, it's important not to forget about them. Certain characters, buildings, and other items can only be unlocked when you reach a certain level.

In order to level up, you've got to collect XP. Adding trees, landscaping, and other items are cheap ways of earning XP faster.

Consult with the Conform-O-Meter

By tapping on the star rating in your left bottom detail view you'll be shown the Conform-O-Meter. There are many different areas that are dictated by star ratings. The higher the star rating you have in each category, the faster you'll rake in bonuses on top of the XP and money that is paid out for each task. For example, planting more trees will cause the tree hugger portion of your conformity score to climb, therefore increasing the bonuses you can collect for performing tasks in that category.

Buying donuts vs buying cash

Tapped Out gives you the option to buy donuts and cash via in-app purchase in order to accelerate how fast you can beat and unlock new objectives and items. When it comes to buying cash or buying donuts the better option is normally buying donuts.

The reason I recommend buying donuts over cash is that donuts allow you to finish objectives faster by rushing them. This in turn gives you cash quicker. In essence, you're really accumulating both faster in turn giving you more money to buy items faster and increase your XP by rushing tasks.

Your tips and tricks?

If you play Tapped Out regularly, what tips and tricks have you found that either help you accumulate more items or clear objectives faster? Let us know either in the comments or through our forums. There's already a Tapped Out tips and tricks thread going so if you know anything you think other iMore readers and forum browsers would find useful, be sure to add it in!

The Basics:

Volkswagen's Golf hatchback--along with its sporty GTI and high-performance Golf R variants--has a look and style that remains unmistakable among hatchbacks. And while it might have in many respects been a trendsetter over the long haul, the market for small, sporty hatchbacks is finally hitting the mainstream, with the Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Subaru Impreza hatchbacks, along with the Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra GT, appealing to more than a narrow niche.

Yet the 2013 Golf stands out as a different kind of car than those other models. On one hand, it has more of a premium small car look and feel, and that's a good thing. But the down side is that while the Jetta and Passat sedans were developed to be stronger values for America--meaning more space, lower price point--the Golf's true European pedigree keeps it one of the priciest models in the class.?

Compared to other hatchbacks, the 2013 Volkswagen Golf is still charming to drive, with a premium feel inside, excellent handling, and a firm but comfortable and quiet ride. If you spring for the base-model Golf, which starts at less than $19k, you should be aware that the base 170-hp five-cylinder engine is perky, but not all that refined or fuel-efficient. The best model in the standard Golf lineup is the TDI, with its excellent and very torquey clean-diesel turbo four-cylinder engine, available DSG dual-clutch transmission, and an EPA highway rating of 42 mpg, but that it's essentially priced as a premium vehicle, with a sticker price that starts more than $6,000 higher than the base gasoline Golf. The sporty GTI actually starts at a lower price than the TDI, and it's a blast to drive in its own right, as it includes all sorts of upgrades, in addition to VW's flexible and smooth 200-hp, 2.0-liter TSI gasoline four.

Across all of these models, you'll find responsive electric power steering and a taut, not jarring, ride. Diesel models (and GTIs, of course) have even a bit more sport tuned into their suspensions. Braking is strong on the Golf, and in all, it's dynamically a cut or two above the Korean competition when it comes to road fluency.

True enthusiasts are going to go for the new Golf R, which adds a higher-output version of the engine making 256 hp and 243 pound-feet, and brings it to the pavement with a version of VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive system, a performance Haldex clutch pack, and many other performance improvements including stronger brakes, a lower, stiffer suspension, and dual exhaust outlets. And perhaps as a reminder that this is a low-volume performance model, it's only offered with a manual gearbox.

No matter which one you choose, you get an interior that offers the same amount of space and usability--and nearly the same amount of comfort and refinement. The Golf, even in its base form, includes good front seats and has a pervasive feel of quality throughout the cabin. But compared to other small-car models, it lacks backseat space--especially in three-door models. Overall, refinement and ride are excellent across the model line for both Golf and GTI models. Only with the Golf R do you get a ride that's somewhat harsher--as well as a little more engine noise.

The Golf itself might not impress as quite as plush for the dollar as some of the newest Korean cars, but it has all the features and modern conveniences to distance itself from any econo-car roots. TDI versions add an LCD interface for the audio system; satellite radio and a CD changer; steering-wheel audio controls; and Bluetooth. On the GTI, there are a few more standard features like heated side mirrors, a sport steering wheel, 18-inch 'Detroit' alloy wheels, and a series of other appearance upgrades inside and out. A sunroof and touch-screen navigation are offered, but the Golf doesn't include Bluetooth at the base level and even at the upper end of the model line it's missing the active-safety options that have become available on some models, even in this class.?

?

Likes:

  • Premium interior feel
  • Comfortable ride
  • Excellent electric power steering
  • Strong, economical TDI engine
  • GTI's fuel-efficient performance

Dislikes:

  • A look that might be too familiar
  • Thirsty base engine
  • Tight backseat access (3-doors)
  • Premium pricing

United States asks India to deliver commercial promise of civil N-deal

US has asked India to deliver the commercial promise of the historic civil nuclear agreement between the two countries. "For my Indian colleagues, I would emphasise the importance of delivering on the commercial promise of this agreement -- to put it in the American vernacular, we need to finish what we started," Geoffrey Pyatt, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, said at a meeting held on the sidelines of the 38th annual US India Business Council (USIBC) on Thursday.

"The 2005 nuclear deal the successful collaboration that produced the 2008 Nuclear Suppliers Group exception and the Obama Administration's rapid negotiation of reprocessing arrangements completed in 2010 are illustrations of what we can accomplish when we work together in the spirit of shared enterprise," he said.

India and the US are now tantalisingly close to the first commercial contracts between India's Nuclear Power Corporation and a major US nuclear supplier, Pyatt said. "The prompt conclusion of these early commercial contracts should be a priority for both our governments and would be an important signal to sceptics that the US-India strategic partnership is living up to its promise and delivering real benefits for people in both our countries," Pyatt said in his remarks.

United States asks India to deliver commercial promise of civil N-deal

He said the defence relationship between the two countries have increased tremendously in recent years. "We are committed to further strengthening our already robust defence trade relationship with India. We are proud to have a growing track record of major system sales, including C-17 and C-130J transport aircraft, P-8I maritime surveillance aircraft, and are on the cusp of signing many more deals," Pyatt said.

"This is significant progress from where we started a decade ago. We have now signed more than 20 Foreign Military Sales cases for defence articles and services with India. Our Direct to Commercial Sales, the number of licenses issues, and the complexity of those licenses all continue to increase," he said adding that the defence sales are more than mere transactions.

"We both endeavour to move beyond a transactional defence relationship. Large, complex weapons systems are meant to last years, even decades. These systems require maintenance and upgrades throughout their life cycle. Indeed, the initial sale of a defence system is often just the starting point of a long-term relationship," Pyatt said. The United States, he said, views the defence sales as a means to the greater end of building a strategic partnership that will foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

India, Pyatt said, is America's most important partner in South Asia, and security cooperation is one of the pillars of its strategic collaboration and represents an enormous achievement for the overall bilateral security relationship. Through Defence Trade Initiative, he said, the US is are committed to reducing bureaucratic impediments, easing transactions between buyers and sellers, increasing cooperative research, and focusing on co-production and co-development opportunities.

"The benefits of this enhanced security cooperation were visible recently, when India's Air Force deployed recently purchased C-130J aircraft to provide its flood-ravaged northern states with critical relief supplies. But I want to emphasise that our efforts are not a one-way street. To improve the relationship, though, we'll need to work through a handful of complex challenges in our defence trade relationship. These issues are sometimes technical, but they can also be political," he cautioned.

Pyatt said there are significant obstacles to further growth in defence trade with India. "India's insistence on 30-50 per cent offset packages to facilitate the growth of its defence industrial base is often incompatible with its existing capacity. And the current 26 per cent cap on foreign direct investment in defence industries limits incentive for US companies to fulfil Indian requests for high-technology defence articles," he noted.

"We also offer to India a defence sales process that few other countries can claim, in that the FMS process is a corruption free system. FMS invokes the full faith and performance of the US government military procurement system. It commits the United States to honour contract terms and to support US weapon systems throughout their life-cycle. India can therefore rely on the US government FMS process for a transparent, corruption-free process with an established history of performance," Pyatt said.

'Rock the cat box'?! Most misquoted lyrics of all time

Manfred Mann's Earth Band is pictured in 1973, three years before the group confused music lovers everywhere by seeming to sing about a feminine hygiene product.

It happens every day in showers, speeding vehicles and karaoke bars all across America. Feeling joyous and carefree, amateur vocalists belt out their favorite tunes ? and botch the lyrics big time.

Which song gets butchered most frequently? A new survey reveals that it?s the 1976 version of ?Blinded by the Light,? which tends to get interpreted like so: ?Blinded by the light...wrapped up like a douche when you?re rollin? in the night.?

I'm a Skittle! I'm a Beatle! '90s lyrics gone mad

On Thursday, Spotify released the results of a June survey of more than 1,000 music fans. Respondents weighed in on the most misquoted song lyrics of all time, and the results are in:

They performed "Rock the Casbah," not "Rock the cat box"! From left to right, Mick Jones, Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon of punk rock band The Clash, circa 1980.

  1. ?Blinded by the light...wrapped up like a douche when you?re rollin? in the night? / Actual lyrics: ?Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night? (Manfred Mann?s Earth Band, ?Blinded by the Light?), 52 percent
  2. ??Scuse me, while I kiss this guy? / ??Scuse me, while I kiss the sky? (Jimmy Hendrix, ?Purple Haze?), 19 percent
  3. ?Rock the cat box? / ?Rock the Casbah? (The Clash, ?Rock the Casbah?), 14 percent
  4. ?Hold me closer, Tony Danza? / ?Hold me closer, tiny dancer? (Elton John, ?Tiny Dancer?), 13 percent
  5. ?There?s a bathroom on the right? / ?There?s a bad moon on the rise? (Creedence Clearwater Revival, ?Bad Moon Rising?), 12 percent
  6. ?Take me down to a very nice city? / ?Take me down to the paradise city? (Guns N? Roses, ?Paradise City?), 10 percent
  7. ?Animal!? / ?Panama!? (Van Halen, ?Panama?), 9 percent
  8. ?Like a cheese stick? / ?Like a G6? (Far East Movement, ?Like a G6?), 8 percent
  9. ?Don't go Jason waterfalls? / ?Don?t go chasing waterfalls? (TLC, ?Waterfalls?), 7 percent
  10. ?I blow bubbles when you are not here? / ?My world crumbles when you are not near? (Macy Gray, ?I Try?), 4 percent

For the record, Jimi Hendrix did not sing, "'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy."

(Survey participants were able to pick more than one song, which is why the percentages above add up to more than 100.)

'Come on, Irene'? Why we mishear song lyrics

The survey, which was conducted via social media and SurveyMonkey.com, also revealed how frustrated people get when they hear mangled song lyrics. The majority of the 1,042 respondents ? 70 percent of them ? said they find flubbed lyrics annoying.

Meanwhile, 47 percent of respondents said they?ve felt embarrassed when they?ve been busted singing the wrong song lyrics themselves.

Pope criminalizes leaks, sex abuse in first laws

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis overhauled the laws that govern the Vatican City State on Thursday, criminalizing leaks of Vatican information and specifically listing sexual violence, prostitution and possession of child pornography as crimes against children that can be punished by up to 12 years in prison.

The legislation covers clergy and lay people who live and work in Vatican City and is different from the canon law which covers the universal Catholic Church.

It was issued at a critical time, as the Vatican gears up for a grilling by a U.N. committee on its efforts to protect children under a key U.N. convention and prevent priests from sexually abusing them. The Vatican signed and ratified the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990 yet only now ? 23 years later ? has it updated its legislation to reflect some of the treaty's core provisions.

The bulk of the Vatican's penal code is based on the 1889 Italian code, and in many ways is outdated. Much of the hodge-podge of laws passed Thursday ? which range from listing crimes against humanity to the illicit appropriation of nuclear material ? bring the Vatican up to date with the many U.N. conventions it has signed over the years.

Others were necessary to comply with international norms to fight money-laundering, part of the Vatican's more recent push toward financial transparency. And still others were designed to update the Vatican's legal system with contemporary practice: The new law cancels out lifetime prison sentences, for example, and instead imposes maximum sentences of 30-35 years in prison.

One new crime stands out as an obvious response to the leaks of papal documents last year that represented one of the gravest Vatican security breaches in recent times.

Paolo Gabriele, the butler for then-Pope Benedict XVI, was tried and convicted by a Vatican court of stealing Benedict's personal papers and giving them to an Italian journalist.

Using the documents, journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi published a blockbuster book on the petty turf wars, bureaucratic dysfunction and allegations of corruption and homosexual liaisons in the highest levels of Catholic Church governance.

Gabriele was convicted of aggravated theft and sentenced to 18 months in the Vatican's police barracks. Benedict eventually pardoned him, but his crime devastated the Vatican, shattering the confidentiality that typically governs correspondence with the pope.

In an indication of how serious the Vatican considers such confidentiality, the penalties for violations of the new law are stiff: Anyone who reveals or receives confidential information or documentation risks six months to two years in prison and a ?2,000 euro ($2,500) fine; the penalty goes up to eight years in prison if the material concerns the "fundamental interests" of the Holy See or its diplomatic relations.

Sexual crimes did exist in the previous law, but in a general form in the archaic code as a crime against "good customs."

The new law defines crimes against children under age 18, including the sale of children, child prostitution, recruiting children, sexual violence, sexual acts with children and the production and possession of child pornography.

In the old code, such general crimes would have carried a maximum penalty of three to 10 years, the Vatican said. Under the revision, the punishments go from five to 10 years, with aggravating circumstances bringing the maximum up to 12 years and a fine of 150,000 euros.

Codifying that law answers one of the questions posed to the Holy See last week by the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child, which will evaluate the Holy See's implementation of the core U.N. treaty protecting children in early 2014.

Other questions will be more problematic for the Holy See to answer, including a request for "detailed information on all cases of child sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy, brothers and nuns" that have been brought to the Vatican's attention over the years.

The Vatican has long considered cases of clerical sex abuse to be the responsibility of local bishops, not the central authority of the Catholic Church.

Vatican officials said it would be wrong to assume that just because these new laws criminalize certain behavior that the behavior previously was legal. It merely means that, 100 years ago, child pornography was not specified as a crime in either the Italian legal code or the Vatican's.

"The introduction of the new regulation is useful to define the specific cases with greater certainty and precisions, and to thus satisfy the international parameters, calibrating the sanctions to the specific gravity of the case," the Vatican foreign minister, Monsignor Dominique Mamberti, wrote in Thursday's Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano.

Demian Bichir delves into immigration debate

NEW YORK (AP) ? Forgive Mexican actor Demian Bichir for pointing out the obvious metaphor in the title of his new TV series "The Bridge," but someone had to do it.

"We need bridges more than walls, you know what I mean?" said Bichir about the immigration and border security debate that is currently occupying the U.S. Congress.

Bichir stars as Detective Marco Ruiz in the FX drama, opposite Diane Kruger, who plays his counterpart in the U.S.

The pair is forced to work together after a body is found on the bridge connecting Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. By the end of the pilot, they suspect a serial killer. Their partnership, and subplots involving other characters, allows the show's writers to also address immigration and political issues on the border.

The U.S. Congress is debating a proposal that would strengthen security along its southern border, while providing a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million workers living in the U.S. without legal permission.

"They're talking about this possible amnesty, but also they're talking about spending millions of dollars building taller, bigger, stronger walls," said Bichir during an interview in New York earlier this month. "We need to find a way of doing it right because that will not stop anybody from coming over here if they see the possibility of having a better life."

Bichir, nominated for an Oscar in 2012 for playing a gardner living in the U.S. without legal permission in "A Better Life," dislikes the political rhetoric that often accompanies the immigration debate.

"Oh, this tremendous enemy called the immigrants. They're taking our jobs and this and that," he said. "They close many factories and fields in Alabama and not even one single American citizen went over there and claimed those jobs and these immigrants, these undocumented workers, just left and it became almost like a ghost town and there was not a single American claiming those jobs, you know what I mean? So it's all a circle of lies that people need to be careful and aware of."

"The Bridge" premieres July 10 at 10 p.m. Eastern on FX.

Upside-Down Sensors Caused Proton-M Rocket Crash

Michi writes "According to Anatoly Zak, the crash of the Russion Proton rocket on 1 July was apparently caused by several angular velocity sensors having been installed upside down. From the source: 'Each of those sensors had an arrow that was supposed to point toward the top of the vehicle, however multiple sensors on the failed rocket were pointing downward instead.' It seems amazing that something as fundamental as this was not caught during quality control. Even more amazing is that the design of the sensors permits them to be installed in the wrong orientation in the first place. Even the simplest of mechanical interlocks (such as a notch at one end that must be matched with a corresponding projection) could have prevented the accident." A review of the quality control procedures used by the contractors responsible is underway.
