California announces Hall of Fame class

California University will add six more names to its Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 11 at a banquet in the Performance Center inside Elmo Natali Student Center.

The list of inductees in the 19th class to be honored at California includes Bill Coleman, Class of 1961 (football); Christine Dillner, Class of 1995 (softball); Kim Kottmeier-Whitlock, Class of 1996 (women?s soccer); Seth Martin, Class of 2002 (men?s basketball); Tim McCutcheon (football); and Brad Rager, Class of 2008 (men?s track and field).

In addition, this year?s banquet will recognize the Vulcans? 2008 PSAC champion men?s soccer team. California began honoring past teams in 2005.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner are $30 each and are available to the public. For reservations, contact Montean Dean in the Office of Alumni Relations, 724-938-4418. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to establish a Hall of Fame athletic scholarship.

Coleman was a four-year letterman and standout cornerback and defensive end for the Vulcans from 1957-60. Coleman led the defense in interceptions three times, and he helped the 1958 team compile an 8-0 record. That team?s defense held opponents to an average of 3.9 points per game and recorded four shutouts.

The Vulcans won 21 of 24 games over Coleman?s final three seasons. He is the fifth player from the 1958 team to be honored by the school. The team?s coach, Ted Nemeth, also is a Hall of Fame member.

Dillner was a three-year starting center fielder for the softball team from 1992-95. She was a three-time all-conference selection and earned all-region honors twice.

Dillner received NFCA All-America honors in 1995 after batting .468 with 80 hits, 54 RBI and 54 runs scored. She finished with 148 career RBI and 59 extra-base hits.

Dillner was a member of teams that won four PSAC West titles and three PSAC finalists, with four NCAA Tournament appearances and the program?s first of five NCAA Division II regional titles, in 1994. Cal?s cumulative record during Dillner?s career years was 151-39-1.

Kottmeier-Whitlock was a two-time all-conference selection during her four years at California, which spanned 1992-95.

She holds the school?s single-season and career records for assists with 14 (tied in 2012) in 1994 and 35 total. Those totals currently rank fourth and fifth in the PSAC record book, respectively. She finished with 30 goals and 95 points, a total that currently ranks fourth in school history. Kottmeier-Whitlock scored a career-best 14 goals as a freshman and helped the 1992 and 1994 teams each win a school record 12 games. That record lasted for 15 years.

McCutcheon was a four-year starting offensive lineman who received first-team all-conference honors twice at tackle and once each at both the guard and center positions. He was a two-time AFCA First-Team All-American and two-time AP All-American, earning first-team honors in 2007. A two-time Gene Upshaw Award finalist, McCutcheon helped the 2005 team set a school record for points per game (42.1) and total offense (462.4 ypg).

The Vulcans won the PSAC West title during each of McCutcheon?s final three seasons, with the 2007 team compiling a school-best 13-1 overall record and making the first of three-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II national semifinals.

Martin was a three-time, first-team all-conference forward from 1999-2001 after transferring from Ohio.

A two-time NABC All-America player, he finished with 1,459 career points, which currently ranks 10th in school history. He also had 535 rebounds and 145 assists. Martin averaged more than 16 points per game in each of his first two years and 19 points his senior year.

Martin helped the Vulans win consecutive PSAC West titles in 1999 and 2000, as well as the 1999 PSAC Championship. The Vulcans won 47 of 60 games those two seasons, which included a 21-3 PSAC West mark. Rager won a school-record 14 PSAC Championships from 2005-08, which included four-consecutive 400-meter dash indoor titles and three consecutive-outdoor titles in both the 200- and 400-meter dash.

Rager was twice named All-America as part of the Vulcans? 1,600-meter relay team, which earned the honor both indoors and outdoors in 2008. Winner of the PSAC Freshman of the Year Award for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Rager was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 and 2008 indoor and outdoor PSAC championship meets.

The 2008 men?s soccer team, coached by 27-year veteran head coach Dennis Laskey, won the school?s first PSAC Championship, capping off a tournament run by defeating No. 5 Millersville, 3-2.

Sophomore goalkeeper Derek Yobbi was named PSAC Tournament MVP after the Vulcans played the final nine minutes of the title game a man down after a red card. Junior forward Mike Luecke led the team in scoring that season with 18 goals and 48 points. The 2008 Vulcans finished with 13 wins and made the team?s second of three NCAA Tournament appearances.
